Fostering a nurturing environment of respectful relationships within your family holds the key to not only harmonious living but also improved academic outcomes for your children. As parents and caregivers, embracing the art of teaching children about respect at a young age sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy interactions and empathetic understanding. It will help cultivate a positive environment where communication flourishes, conflicts are resolved constructively and bonds are fortified.
Teaching children to respect themselves and others will open up avenues for both personal growth and academic achievement. Fostering an environment where respect is not just a word, but a practised behaviour, will empower young people with essential life skills. Effective communication, active listening, and the art of compromise will provide your child with a solid foundation that will transcend family interactions and help them collaborate effectively with peers, teachers and the broader community.
Equipping children with an understanding of healthy versus unhealthy relationships is an important aspect of their development. It will guide them to make informed choices, foster positive connections and set boundaries that contribute to their emotional wellbeing. Understanding the nuances between healthy and unhealthy relationships provides children with the essential tools to navigate their social world, build self-esteem and cultivate meaningful relationships.
In this edition of SchoolTV, learn how to empower young people in healthy interactions to embrace differences and forge connections that honour their self-worth. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. To watch this month's edition CLICK HERE.

A Father Who Sings
“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
We had a 21st birthday party at our place this month. It was a delight to reminisce about our daughter’s birth. At the very civilised hour, just after midday and after two sons, along came a baby girl. What a delight it was to receive another gift of God’s grace. Soon after our daughter was born a tune developed in my head, some words came to mind and out came a song. I took my guitar to the hospital and sang it to my wife and newborn baby.
Thank you, Father, for your kindness For the good things from your hand You have made us in your likeness, Made according to your plan Earth below, the sky above Woman, man, the gift of love Thank you, Lord, Gracious God, For this precious little one, Wrap this child in your love In the new life of the Son.
There were a couple more verses. It’s a simple but heartfelt song of thanks to God for his grace and a prayer that God would give this child new life in Jesus. The day I sang this in the hospital emotions were high, and as I sang my wife’s tears flowed. The song turned out well enough to sing on the day of our daughter’s baptism, Father’s Day in 2002.
This is what our daughters and sons do to us. They make us do strange things, like writing songs and singing about them. Like going to see Barbie with them, and maybe secretly enjoying it! Like encouraging them to persist with practising the violin. Like taking one’s life into one’s hands and teaching them to drive. Like doing a late-night pickup when their evening hasn’t gone as well as expected.
As we celebrate our fathers on Father’s Day, we remember that we all have a Father in heaven, who delights over us. Zephaniah describes God as the Mighty Warrior who saves, who rejoices over his children with singing. It might not be your first impression of God, but this is who God is – a devoted Father, who sings with joy over his children.
We have a loving Father who would do anything for us his beloved children, and does in Jesus. This Father’s Day, let’s thank God for our Fathers, especially our Father in heaven.

Leichhardt Fundraiser
For their House rotation, Leichhardt organised a ‘mini carnival’ to raise money for their nominated charity RUOK? and participated in activities that allowed them to enjoy getting to know and check in with their ‘House mates’ from Years 7 - 12.
R U OK? is a public health promotion charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives.
Their work focuses on building the motivation, confidence and skills of the help-giver – the person who can have a meaningful conversation with someone who is struggling with life.
A special thank you to Year 11 Leichhardt students who worked hard to fill the Year 12’s shoes while completing their mock exams.

Primary Years News
Congratulations must go to Mrs Katie Bryant on her recent award from ACEL (The Australian Council for Educational Leaders). Katie won the Pivotal People Leadership Award for her work in Early Years Literacy.
Katie has been instrumental in leading and implementing a bespoke evidence-based literacy program, which has proven to be a pivotal change for both students and teachers alike.
I know that you will join me in congratulating Katie for her continued dedication and commitment to the youngest students at St Peters.
THREE-WAY CONFERENCES
As part of our Primary Years reporting process, we will hold Three-Way Conferences at the end of Term 3. This year, these will be on 14 and 15 September. As they are individual conversations, you will be required to make an appointment. Please refer to the letter sent out on Monday 28 September for further information.
Three-Way Conferences are different from Parent Teacher Interviews as they provide an opportunity for each student to be an active participant in the conversation about their learning.
The goals of Three-Way Conferences are:
To help students demonstrate evidence of learning.
To teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation.
To facilitate the development of students' organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence.
To encourage students, parents and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue.
To encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning.
To increase parent understanding of their child’s learning through the reporting process.
Be communicators by expressing thoughts and ideas.
Be balanced by considering themselves, academically and socially.
Be risk-takers by trying new ideas or strategies.
Be caring by being genuinely interested.
Be thinkers by making decisions.
Be open-minded by respecting different points of view.
Be principled by being honest and fair.
Be reflective by thinking about strengths and weaknesses.
During this meeting, the student, parents and the teacher collaborate to establish and identify the student’s strengths and areas for improvement. This may lead to the setting of new goals, with all determining how they can support the achievement of the goals. Students may share various samples from their portfolios; however, there will not be time to look through all entries. Please remember that those students with digital portfolios can access these at any time via Firefly. Younger students with hard copy portfolios, Prep – Year 2, will take them home after your meeting so that you can continue to have conversations over the break. These portfolios will need to be returned in the first week of Term 4.
We look forward to welcoming you later this term to share in your child’s learning journey.

Book Week
Since 1945, The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has celebrated CBCA Book Week in educational institutions, bookstores and libraries across Australia. The theme for CBCA Book Week 2023 was ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’ and students in Primary Years certainly grew themselves as readers throughout Term Three. From library lessons, competitions, lunchtime craft and activities, book picnics and a book fair – Book Week was an opportunity for growth and inspiration.
As a part of CBCA Book Week, Primary Years students and staff participated in our annual Book Week Dress Up and Giving Day. Students dressed as their favourite book characters and staff wore pyjamas in support of the Pyjama Foundation – our charity of focus for CBCA Book Week 2023. The Pyjama Foundation supports children living in out of home care, who often move from home to home and to different schools which adversely affects their access to books and literacy support. Money raised allows community mentors called 'Pyjama Angels' to be recruited, screened, trained and then matched with a child in care. Together they read books, play educational games, do home-work and so much more. Most importantly, they empower children with learning, life skills and confidence to reach their full potential.
Megan Daley Lower Primary Teacher Librarian
Book Week has become an important event in the life of primary schools around Australia. Each year across Australia, schools and libraries spend a week celebrating books, together with Australian authors and illustrators, as part of Book Week Celebrations. For 2023 Book Week celebrated the theme 'Grow, Read, Inspire' and students in the Primary Years celebrated with a day of dressing as a favourite book character, along with many other exciting activities connected to our libraries and literature.
Thanks must go to our Primary Years Library staff, Christina Wheeler, Megan Daley, Jo McNeilly, Ana Malta, Danielle Richards and Louise Andrews, for their organisation and commitment to Book Week in our Primary Years Libraries.

UQ Women in Engineering
Last week as part of the 2023 UQ Engineering Ambassadors Program, Xavier C, King Y and Lara B (Year 11 students) organised for Amanda Merrick from the University of Queensland to come and speak at the Junior High Assembly about all the opportunities that are on offer for women in Engineering at UQ.
Amanda is currently undertaking the role of Development and Communications Coordinator for Women in Engineering at UQ. Through their programs, they have increased the participation of female engineering students from 18% in 2013 (when the program began) to 27% in 2022. Amanda provided valuable information to the students of Junior High about the different areas of Engineering on offer at UQ and what engineers do, and explained the importance of diversity in the workplace.
A key example that Amanda shared on the importance of a diverse workplace, especially in the engineering profession, was that when cars are manufactured, they are done so after testing the safety features, such as airbags, using a crash test dummy representing the 50th percentile male, who is 175cm tall and would have a mass of approximately 78 kg. So those who do not adhere to those specifications have a greater chance of an injury in a car crash. Women, for instance, have a 30% increased fatality rate when involved in a car accident than the 50th percentile male.
I’m sure that Junior High all took something important from Amanda’s speech, and I’d like to extend a large thank you to Amanda Merrick and the Women in Engineering Department at UQ for providing an excellent learning opportunity for the students.

Senior Japanese Cultural Activity Excursion
On Friday August 24 our senior Japanese learners embarked on a journey of exploring authentic Japanese culture through a range of cultural activities provided by the Japanese Culture Centre at the beautiful Japanese Garden of Mt. Coot-tha, Botanic Gardens. The Years 10 and 11 students tried on Japanese Yukata, a classic attire for both Japanese young boys and girls and learnt folk songs, singing and dancing in those traditional outfits. This was but a prelude to the exquisite tea ceremony that followed, guided by a group of Japanese tea masters. Our students were amazed by the rich rituals and were in awe by the meaning that each procedure of the ceremonies represented. This experience expanded their horizons of cultural appreciation and plunged them into the profound depths of the Japanese way of life.

Best of luck against Padua College this Saturday in Round 6.

BSRA – GIRLS ROWING HEAD OF THE RIVER
Last Saturday was the 2023 Head of the River and our girls certainly did us proud. It was an early start for the girls as they ventured to Wyaralong Dam, after a tough final regatta due to windy conditions, there was a lot of excitement for the final regatta of the BSRA season.
Well done to Mrs Helen Allard and her amazing team, they do an incredible job with the logistics of running this program to give the girls an amazing Rowing experience.
Thank you to Helen, all our coaches, our parents and girls for a wonderful season.
We wish the crews preparing for the State Championship in Bundaberg in two weeks’ time all the best with their preparations.
The St Peters Girls Rowing Shed had a fantastic day out at the BSRA Head of the River regatta last Saturday 26 August. The highlights of the day were the gold medal performances from Steph P in the Year 9 Single Scull and the Senior Four of Eva H, Bridget D, Charli S, Bella B and Esther L. Steph P built on her success in the single from 2022 to beat some very competitive peers from St Hilda’s and Brisbane State High School. Steph P will go on to race the Championship Girls Year 9 Single Scull at the upcoming QLD Schools State Championships from 16-18 September in Bundaberg.
The Senior 4+ win is a testament to the determination and tenacity of our rowing program this year. This crew has been mired by illness, injury and misadventure all year in their preparation to defend the title from 2022. We are indebted to Eva H and Bridget D for rejoining the program after some time away in order that this crew could qualify to race. Charli S, who is new to the rowing program in 2023, has done an outstanding job of developing her technical skills to race standard and Bella B and Esther L have worked hard and maintained the faith all season. Coach Madeleine Williams has done an outstanding job to ensure the crew was as prepared as possible. Collectively, the effort of this crew in the face of what, at times, seemed like insurmountable odds is a credit to them and a demonstration of the grit and loyalty that rowing engenders in students. Their gold medal is hard earned and very well deserved.
We can also commend our Year 8 and Year 9 crews who have worked extremely hard to come within a few seconds of a podium finish. The Year 8 second quad was especially unlucky this year to finish seventh less than one second off the podium and the only photo finish of the regatta this year. The first and second crews in these grades will also compete at States in a few weeks and are back training hard to find some extra speed for their next races. Our Year 10 first quad also had a difficult year with injury and raced well in a highly competitive field.
The highlight of the Head of the River is the Open 8+ race and St Peters 1st VIII (Megan B, Niamh S, Poppy Y, Mac B, Jess M, Laura K, Robyn M, Tiare R and Olivia A) did a stellar job of staying with the top crews throughout the race to finish in seventh place behind an extremely fast All Hallows crew who won the event for the first time in 23 years from St Margarets in second and St Hilda’s in third place. This event was the final race in the BSRA careers of our Year 12 students Megan B, Niamh S and Robyn M. We wish them well in their exams next term and look forward to seeing them back on the water in the future. I wish to thank Megan B and Robyn M, Rowing Captains for 2023, for their leadership and the camaraderie they have brought to the shed this year. The 1st VIII will also race at the upcoming State Championship regatta and we wish them the very best of luck in Bundaberg for their final, final race in St Peters colours.
AUSTRALIAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to Claire R, Lilja J, Ava K, Sienna B and Gabrielle S who represented Queensland at the Australian Cross Country Championships last weekend in Stromlo Forrest, Canberra.
What a wonderful experience for the girls, they all performed well on the challenging course with special mention to Gabby who placed first in the U17 age group and Claire who placed second in the U12 age group. Well done girls, you have trained incredibly hard, and we are very proud of you.
WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
Two rounds to go!
Round 8: Saturday 2 September v Ipswich Girls' Grammar School (Away) Round 9: Saturday 9 September v St Hilda’s School (Home). Please note, St Hilda’s does not have any Hockey teams.
Round 7 was another great round of Sport for our girls. Our Tennis, Hockey, Netball and Volleyball teams enjoyed the challenge of taking on the powerhouse of Brisbane State High School and did amazingly well.
Round 8 this Saturday we take on Ipswich Girls' Grammar School Away at their venues, we are looking forward to the challenge. Good luck to all our teams!
Please watch for communication from your respective sport coordinators and keep an eye on the St Peters App for the weekly draws. Please ensure you arrive on time and in the correct uniform to prepare for your games. Good luck girls!
Reminder - communicate if unable to attend a Training Session or a Game. Early communication is particularly important for games.
Attendance at training across our sports has at times been poor, and there has been no communication from many girls. It is important as we continue to work on building culture in our programs that girls/families understand attendance at training is expected. Of course, we understand missing some training sessions is not avoidable but where possible please arrange appointments outside training times.
St Peters played host to BSHS at the Nissan Arena for Round 7 of the QGSSSA competition.
A late court change saw the 7C team take to the Show Court and they did not disappoint. Continuing the form displayed last week they led from start to finish to post a comfortable win. The 7B team may have started slowly but a great second quarter put them in a comfortable position to bring home the win. Unfortunately, the 7A and 8A teams were not able to overcome a more disciplined opponent and had to settle for a loss.
Back on Show Court for the main event and the Open game was fast and furious. The girls got off to a great start in the first quarter but were not able to shake the opposition leading into half time. Fortunately, on the back of a lovely shooting display the girls were able to exert their dominance in the second half and pull away to secure a comfortable win. Both the 8B and 8C teams were clearly in control from the opening quarter and were able to build on their lead to post big wins. The 9A team was not able to overcome a strong defensive effort from BSHS and suffered the only loss of the round.
In Round 3 it was the 10B1 team that took to the Show Court. The girls started strongly to lead at the first break but did not have it all their own way until the last quarter when they were able to pull away to post a solid win. The 10A team looked determined to erase the disappointment of last week and led narrowly at the end of the first quarter. Coach Kylie need not have ever worried as the girls played some lovely Netball to increase their lead at every break and win comfortably. The 9B team started slowly and gave away a lead that unfortunately they were not able to recover despite some determined play throughout the remaining three quarters.
For the final Round, the Senior A team took to the Show Court knowing the Premiership was on the line. With so many lead changes throughout the game, the result was in doubt up until the buzzer went. A penalty in the circle, a cool head as the ball went through the hoop and the Senior A team won by one and the Show Court delivered four wins from four games. The Senior B game with these girls also vying for the premiership was a tightly contested game until half time when they were able to exert their dominance and gradually pull away for a comfortable win. Hoping to make a clean sweep of the Senior games the C team were involved in a close contest and although they took the lead in the final quarter, were not able to hang on and went down by one.
The most gallant effort of the day must go to the 9C team. Faced with the decision to forfeit or play with only five, the girls chose the tough option and took to the court. They may have been clearly undermanned but with a positive outlook and a steely determination they led from the outset and the result was never in doubt.
What an impressive result to finish the day and contribute to 10 wins from 15 games against a formidable opponent. Well Done Ladies.
