Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics, and societal expectations are contributing to these issues. It's therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health, and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.

R U OK?Day is an initiative that focuses on preventing suicide by encouraging meaningful personal connections and helping informal support networks to help recognise the signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, "Are you OK?"

Engaging in R U OK?Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it's a commitment to our students' overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued, and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK?Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.

Have you ever wondered what you would wish for if you were asked for three wishes? It’s tantalising, isn’t it? Would you want wealth, beauty, power, fame, curly hair, world peace, an end to discrimination and a cure for cancer? Stories about Aladdin’s lamp and wishes coming true have featured in fairy tales for generations, but Solomon hits the jackpot! God asks him what he wants and actually makes good on the request. And not only does Solomon get what he wished for, but God adds on riches, possessions and honour. Wow! That is an amazing response.

I ask God for a lot of things. There are many people who I pray for on a regular and irregular basis. I don’t keep tabs on how these prayers are answered, but I know God hears those prayers and some responses have been over and above what I could have expected.

If we fast forward from the Old Testament to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, I find his reference to King Solomon most interesting. We have Solomon, who has wisdom and knowledge plus riches and possessions. Yet when Jesus tells us not to worry about life, he suggests that we ‘consider the lilies of the field … Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these’. And as I look at the lilies, geraniums, citrus blossoms, daisies, sweet peas and all of the other spring flowers blooming in my garden today, I have to agree that nothing made by humans can match them for colour, form, perfume and beauty! Jesus then suggests that we don’t need to worry as God is there looking after us. There is also the promise: ‘Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well’ (Matthew 6:25).

Solomon is not the only one that God is going to shower with blessings. God will also look after each of us in every way – take time to look around and recognise those blessings he has gifted us.

Loving God, thank you for hearing our prayers and answering them so generously. Please strengthen our faith in you so that when we worry, we recognise that you are looking after us and that you will provide for all of our needs in ways far beyond what we can imagine. Amen.

Due to the continuing warm weather, the compulsory wearing of the College blazer will now be optional from Thursday, 29 August, until the end of term. If students are representing the College in a formal capacity, the blazer must be worn.

Think of this event as a fun indoor picnic. Tickets are required, but seating is not assigned—it's first-come, first-served. You can organise a table with friends or join a table and make new ones!

Bring your picnic basket filled with your own food, drinks, and supplies like crockery, cutlery, and glasses. While everyone brings their own food, it's common to share with others at your table.

Don't forget to bring some cash or your credit card! There will be games throughout the evening and raffle tickets for sale, offering a variety of wonderful prizes. This is the Music Support Group's biggest fundraising event of the year, and all proceeds go towards enhancing the music experience for every student at St Peters.

St Peters in Concert on Sunday 8 September, will be a veritable smorgasbord of musical styles as nearly 20 ensembles from the Junior High and Senior School perform in two consecutive concerts: Matinee (2:00pm) and Soiree (5:00pm). These concerts will showcase the depth and breadth of the Music Program in Years 7–12. It will also be a wonderful opportunity for the audience and ensemble members to hear and appreciate ensembles from different areas of the program.

The concerts are free, and there is no need to book a seat. Parents, friends, and families are invited to choose their own seats in the Dron Auditorium.

The PAC Servery will be open to serve hot and cold snacks and drinks from 1:30pm.

What an exciting term it’s been in Langer Library! Throughout August, we celebrated Book Week with the theme Reading is Magic. Students and staff enjoyed the magical reading room we created, complete with windows, a fireplace, walls of books, sofas, armchairs and cushions. It was continually in use and a wonderful place to relax, with fictional characters Harry, Hermione, Ron, Gandalf, and Lady Galadriel watching through the windows. CBCA Book of the Year notable books were displayed, and the winners were highlighted and promoted to Junior High classes. Activities at lunchtimes included charades, bingo, quizzes, jeopardy games based on books, a scavenger hunt and a popular digital escape room.

This week, we hosted award-winning Australian author Morris Gleitzman for the Year 7 Literature Event. Morris is an amazing author and presenter. He focused on his internationally best-selling Once series and tied this into the Term 4 English curriculum study on Holocaust novels.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, referred to as Duke of Ed, is a youth development leadership scheme for young people aged 14 to 25 years. Any person can join the award at any time once they have reached the qualifying age. Participants progress at their own pace.

As part of our Primary Years reporting process, we will hold Three Way Conferences at the end of Term 3. This year, these will be on 12-13 September. As they are individual conversations, you are required to make an appointment. Details were in the recent letter emailed to families.

Three-way Conferences are different from Parent Teacher Interviews, as they provide an opportunity for each student to be an active participant in the conversation about their learning.

The goals of Three-Way Conferences are:

• to help students demonstrate evidence of learning
• to teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation
• to facilitate the development of students' organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence
• to encourage students, parents and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue
• to encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning, and to increase parent understanding of their child’s learning through the reporting process.

Importantly, Three-Way Conferences develop the Primary Years Programme Learner Profile Attributes in our students by allowing them to:

• Be inquirers by asking questions.
• Be knowledgeable by sharing information.
• Be communicators by expressing thoughts and ideas.
• Be balanced by considering themselves, academically and socially.
• Be risk-takers by trying new ideas or strategies.
• Be caring by being genuinely interested.
• Be thinkers by making decisions.
• Be open-minded by respecting different points of view.
• Be principled by being honest and fair.
• Be reflective by thinking about strengths and weaknesses.

During this meeting, the student, parents and the teacher collaborate to establish and identify the student’s strengths and areas for improvement. This may lead to the setting of new goals, with all determining how they can support the achievement of the goals. Students may share various samples from their portfolios; however, there will not be time to look through all entries. Please remember that those students with digital portfolios can access these at any time via Firefly. Younger students with hard copy portfolios, Prep–Year 2, will take them home after your meeting so that you can continue to have conversations over the break. These portfolios will need to be returned in the first week of Term 4.

DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA

Throughout this term, Years 4 and 6 have been participating in a six-week Dance Unit. This has been facilitated by the 'Superstars' Dance Company alongside St Peters HPE staff. This unit has provided students the opportunity to express themselves through dance, using movement to communicate and connect on a personal and social level.

The primary focus of this Dance Unit has been Hip-Hop style, offering a vibrant and energetic experience for all participants. The unit culminates in a Dance Extravaganza on Thursday 12 September, and we warmly invite you to join us for this event. Doors open at 1:45pm. Years 4 and 6 students should wear their house shirts.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Join the St Peters Club Water Polo program! It's a fantastic way for our students to dive into one of Australia’s fastest-growing sports. Our program helps girls build skills and strategies while making new friends. New students starting at St Peters in Term 1, 2025, are also welcome to join at the beginning of the 24-25 season, giving them a head start in settling in and forming friendships. GIRLS PRIMARY ALL SCHOOLS TOUCH TOURNAMENT

We are excited to offer our Years 5-6 girls the opportunity to represent St Peters in the upcoming BTF Primary All Schools Touch Tournament, scheduled for the weekend of 19-20 October at J.F O'Grady Memorial Park, Fairfield.

To ensure our team is well-prepared, we’ll be running four more training sessions every Tuesday from 3:30pm-4:30pm at the Indooroopilly Campus. Training begins in Term 3 on 3 September and continues through to Term 4.

We are thrilled to announce that St Peters will be entering boys' teams into the Years 5-6 AIC Touch Gala Day on Saturday, 19 October. This event is a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their skills and teamwork in a fast-paced and exciting environment. Touch Football not only develops agility and coordination but also encourages strategic thinking and communication. We encourage all interested boys in Years 5-6 to start practising. AIC TRACK & FIELD MEETS

The meets are open to all boys in Years 5-6, who are encouraged to attend as many meets as possible and to compete in as many events as they can. There is a sign-up form for each separate meet. Data on distances and times will be collected from each meet and used to ultimately select the team for the Championships.

MSW PRIMARY YEARS CRICKET TERM 4

In Term 4, St Peters participates in a club competition within our local area known as the MSW Cricket Competition. This competition takes place on Saturdays and includes teams from every age group from Years 4–11.

The only exception is the younger girls' team, which plays in a 20/20 format on Friday nights under lights, with games starting at 6:00pm.

The competition runs over 10 weeks, from Saturday 5 October, to Saturday 7 December.

This is a user pay activity which is $395.00 for the season.

The cost covers 12 weeks of training and games, including the expenses for coaches. The fee also includes a free training shirt, training hat, and a baggy maroon for game day.

ST PETERS LEARN TO SWIM HOLIDAY INTENSIVE

St Peters Learn to Swim will be running holiday intensive sessions for all current and new St Peters swimmers.

Purpose of Intensives:

The holiday intensive program aims to fast track your child’s swimming progression.

The holiday intensive program offers three 30-minute swimming lessons per week (run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday) for $75 (plus booking fees) per swimmer each week. The session time for each level will stay the same for each day of the holiday period.

Week 1 - Monday 16 September, Wednesday 18 September and Friday 20 September

AND/OR

Week 2 - Monday 23 September, Wednesday 25 September and Friday 27 September

There are also some private sessions offered in the holiday intensive program. The fee for a private session is $50.00 per lesson plus booking fees.

Learn to Swim fees will be payable in advance for the holiday intensive program (through Eventbrite) and are non-refundable.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Gemma de V (Year 7), Sienna B (Year 9), Ava K (Year 10) and Ella K (Year 12) who represented Queensland at the Australian Cross Country Championships in Launceston last week. In freezing and challenging conditions, all three girls performed well, highlighted by Gemma who placed 7th in the U14 age group. The QLD U14 age group placed third, earning Gemma a bronze medal.

Rugby League News

With our Seniors having a bye due to St Patrick’s College forfeiting, all eyes turned to our Junior Rugby League side who followed up their impressive Round 5 victory with a phenomenal performance over the previously undefeated Padua College 7A’s.

Throughout the season the Junior Rugby League team have been very fortunate to have Mick Hancock, 5-time premiership winning Australian and Queensland Representative from the Brisbane Broncos visit to run two training sessions. Mick had provided the playing group with expertise tutelage while instilling confidence in the team that has reflected in our season results.

This weekend will feature our Focus Round for our final AIC Tennis round of the season with several teams in premiership contention. We wish all teams the best of luck for the season as St Peters Tennis looks to secure the Tennis Aggregate Premiership for the 10th straight year.

Friday night, St Peters will host the 9A and 9B for their games on Lohe Street Courts and Saturday morning will feature the Opens. Next week will be our third meet on Wednesday 10 September 2024 hosted at State Athletics Facility (SAF). All students involved are strongly encouraged to attend as many meets as possible.

For our St Peters sporting programs to positively develop and grow, it is paramount that our students attend training sessions for their chosen Sport, so they can improve and refine Sport-specific skills and build cohesion amongst their teammates.

If students are unable to attend some training sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly, and also the respective coordinator/s.

Matchday expectations 

A reminder that all St Peters boys do need to be dressed correctly at both AIC training and at AIC games. All uniform items can be purchased from Shop45 or via School Locker, please refer to the website for opening hours. For matchdays enclosed footwear must be worn to games, no slides or Crocs are to be worn at St Peters or associated AIC schools.

Basketball

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

At Games – All St Peters AIC Basketballers must be wearing:

• St Peters jersey
• St Peters maroon PE/sports shorts
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Rugby League

Correct Training and Playing Uniform Requirements

Training – students must wear their ‘Program Shirt’ to their training session.

Games – students are to arrive at their game wearing:

• St Peters ‘program shirt’ and then get changed into their jersey
• Mouthguard is mandatory
• Long maroon football socks
• Joggers must be worn at all times – No slides or thongs are to be worn at any time

Tennis

• Students to wear full PE uniform with tennis hat to games. First IV to wear the First uniform presented at the start of the season.

Track & Field

• Students to wear the Track & Field singlet to all meets

ST PETERS STUDENT SPECTATORS ON GAMEDAYS

Please note, dogs are not permitted on campus to accompany spectators to watch Football or Rugby fixtures (service dogs permitted).

Should any St Peters student be attending a St Peters sporting event/game outside of normal College hours, it is expected that they are dressed in St Peters formal uniform. Should a student not be wearing the correct attire when attending a sporting event/game, they may be asked to leave the venue.

WET WEATHER AND CANCELLATIONS

With regards to wet weather and any unforeseen or potential cancellations of AIC sports, please ensure that you keep an eye out for notifications and alerts via the St Peters App. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated on both training cancellations and game day changes as the week progresses.

The Tennis Parent Support Group Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 8 October 2024 in the classrooms above Sports House at 6:30pm. All are welcome.

Calling for nominations for all positions as listed below. All positions will be declared vacant at the meeting.

Saturday 17 August saw eight teams battle it out at the P&F | SPOSA Trivia Night. It was fantastic fun with everyone getting into the post-Olympics spirit. Kat Feeney did a brilliant job keeping everyone on track and entertained throughout the night. It was a nail biting finish with two teams tied for first, even after six quick fire questions. The result… several brave team members performing their best Raygun impressions in a hilarious Breakdancing Contest for the win!! Congratulations to our winning team, A Team, who nominated Micah Projects for the $1000.00 donation! We wish to thank Hing and Esther from Aesop Media for the wonderful photos, Andrew and Darren Draper for their gold medal-level PowerPoint skills, Anthony de Stefani and Robert Barber for their prize/auction donations, and the Committee members who volunteered to help make the night a success! Trivia Night will return in 2026.

Congratulations to Thoma B who last week brought the Bruce Cup back home to Queensland with the team successfully winning the National title again at the 2024 School Sport Australia 12 Years and under Tennis Championships held in Darwin, with Suzaan Stoltz (2011) coaching the team to victory.
