Students today have extremely busy schedules, with ever increasing responsibilities at school and at home. Many kids, especially adolescents, are going to bed later and later and are at risk of sleep deprivation. This affects three areas of a child’s development: psychological, physiological and psychosocial. All three are essential to a child's growth, learning ability and overall wellbeing. Sleep is vital to a child’s overall development and is as important as diet and exercise.
Sleep also strengthens a child’s immune systems and supports their ability to function properly on a daily basis. Children who do not get enough sleep show increased levels of aggressive behaviour, are less attentive and are much less active. Trying to catch up on sleep on weekends is not the answer and can still lead to severe sleep deprivation.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn about the importance of sleep and how sleep deprivation can have adverse effects on a child’s health and wellbeing.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good…Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are…Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:9-21, selected verse)Read Romans 12:9-21 on biblegateway.com
When I work with students as they travel on their faith journey, I tend to invite them to respond to the prompt: “This I Believe”. I stress to them that they are not affirming that they understand and own everything about their faith for now and forever. Indeed, we often find that people who think they have all the answers can be kind of scary and somewhat stubborn in their knowingness. Rather, when we see and understand faith as a lifelong journey we learn and grow and discover that there is so much more to life, much more to our actions and how we live in community.
This is the perspective in which I hear Paul’s words to the Romans. They are a description and an invitation to Christian community. This is who we strive to be as a community based on Lutheran teachings. Living in a community is not always easy, and it certainly helps when we can follow St Paul’s words of advice. But of course, being human, things will go wrong and harmony can be lost. This is where it helps to realise that we are on a journey of restoration as well. This is a journey where we can weep with those who weep as we carry them in their grief. This is a journey where we can discover how to overcome evil that is done with the support of a God who is good.

Orange Round
The Orange Round is an event that has happened for the past two years in the Boys Volleyball program. It is a charity round that raises money and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation, and honours the life of a very loved member of the St Peter’s Volleyball Community who unfortunately passed away from the condition in 2022. This year, the Girls Volleyball captains and Opens team were determined to follow the Boy’s tradition and have organised their own Orange Round, to be played on 9 September, from 8:00am - 2:00pm at the St Peters Gym, with the main event being the undefeated Opens team’s game at 12:00pm. The girls, with the support of parents and coaches, have organised a bake sale and sausage sizzle, all proceeds of which will go to the Leukaemia Foundation. It will be a fun day celebrating something much bigger than the sport of volleyball, and we hope to see a big crowd there to support.

Chinese Moon Festival Celebrations
On 29 August, St Peters Lutheran College was alive with the captivating customs of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. Students from the Chinese classes in Years 7-10 enjoyed a memorable "Chinese Lunchbox Incursion", savouring an assortment of traditional Chinese delicacies. Enhancing the festive atmosphere, the usual school bells were briefly substituted with the deep tones of Chinese cultural bells, lending an authentic touch to the festivities. Our Junior High Chinese learners delved into the tradition of Moon Cakes, not only tasting them but also crafting their own using playdough. Meanwhile, our Senior High Chinese language students showcased their linguistic prowess by crafting poems focused on themes of the moon, love, family and harmony. The Mid-Autumn Festival, rooted deeply within Chinese culture, highlights the significance of family gatherings and appreciation for life's gifts. Through these engaging activities, our students enriched their appreciation and insight into these treasured Chinese traditions and values.

Primary Years News
Father's Day is a significant occasion that serves as a heartfelt reminder of the vital role male figures play in our lives. It's a day to express gratitude, admiration and love for fathers, grandfathers, uncles and all male role models who have made a positive impact.
First and foremost, Father's Day allows us to acknowledge the unconditional love and support fathers provide. These paternal figures often work tirelessly to provide for their families, offering guidance, protection and wisdom. Their influence extends beyond providing for physical needs; they also serve as emotional anchors, offering comfort and reassurance during life's ups and downs.
Celebrating male role models extends beyond biological fathers. Grandfathers, uncles, older brothers and mentors all contribute to our personal growth. They inspire us with their life experiences, values and lessons learned. These individuals often impart valuable skills and knowledge that shape our character and ambitions.
I am blessed to have two Uncles, Charlie and Rob, who have been so influential on the person I have become today. Both men have a zest for life and through my interactions with them have learnt so much about being a father myself. Uncle Charlie still remains the biggest kid of all, and he would always be in the thick of backyard cricket games, quests to build the biggest bonfire or competitive swimming challenges to see who could swim the greatest number of laps without breathing, and when I couldn’t win, I’d wrap my arms around his shoulders and hold on for the ride. Uncle Charlie is 60 now and still shows me the benefit of having a positive perspective on life.
Uncle Rob is our family’s equivalent of Steve Irwin. Looking through photo albums as a child I saw photos of Rob catching snakes and eagles out in the bush, or holding up fish the length of his body while fishing off Gove. Rob is the wild adventurer who pulls mud crabs out of holes with his bare hands and has paddled his kayak down rivers from Northern Territory to Queensland with only his fishing gear, rifle and swag. Rob has taught me to be a risk taker and to get out and embrace the outdoors. The only thing slowing him down now is his knees!
Father's Day is more than just a date marked on the calendar; it's a tribute to the significance of male role models in our lives and society, just like my uncles, Charlie and Rob. It's a reminder to express appreciation, strengthen family bonds and inspire the next generation to become responsible and loving fathers and mentors.
Thank You
A big thank you must go to Anita Pang, Krupa Raniga and the lovely group of ladies who helped order and run the Father’s Day stalls yet again this year. Without your assistance, this event would not take place. Another big thanks to Laura Hutchinson and the Hospitality students from Senior School for providing food and refreshments at the breakfast, and to the Year 5 students who assisted on the morning.

Collaborative PYP Exhibition
This week, Year 6 students kicked off their preparations for their collaborative PYP exhibition. They began by engaging in team-building activities, performances and presentations. Over the next six weeks, these Year 6 students will work together as teams, pooling their efforts and talents. The PYP exhibition is a special time when students delve deeply into a subject of personal interest, allowing them to share their newfound knowledge and insights.
This exhibition is a unique opportunity for students to embrace cooperative learning and research, take ownership of their education and showcase their development in line with the IB Learner Profile attributes. At St Peters this year, we are committed to creating an exhibition that is not only highly engaging but also relevant to our students.
One exciting highlight from this week was the "Amazing Race" event on Wednesday. In this challenge, students were tasked with forming new teams of four, comprising members from across the year level. Their mission was to complete a series of tasks at nine different stations within a specified time frame. The first, second and third teams to successfully complete all the challenges were recognised as the exhibition's outstanding collaborators.
Student quotes about the amazing race-
Magnus: "The amazing race I suppose was amazing!" Zoul: "To start you must plan." Charlotte: "Great team-building activity." Sumona: "It was a lot of Fun." Maddie: "You need teamwork to accomplish it."
This is only the beginning, and we look forward to seeing what amazing ideas our students have throughout the exhibition process.

Junior High
Junior High News
Prudence and self-control are the character strengths being highlighted this week in Junior High. As we approach the holiday period, it is important for students to remember the need to make wise decisions and to think things through before acting - or reacting, to particular situations.
Those who rank temperance as one of their top virtues and self-control as one of their key character strengths tend to make informed choices and carefully consider their options before making a decision. On the other hand, those who are impulsive, those who make hasty decisions without thinking of the consequences, or those who always react spontaneously to situations, may find themselves in trouble – as the result of making some poor choices.
We encourage our Junior High students to slow down and take time to consider the consequences of their decisions and the impact of their words or their actions. By carefully thinking things through, they will begin to show good judgement and make wiser choices.
Athletics Carnivals
As a member of the Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA) and AIC Sporting Association, St Peters is required to bring spectators to the upcoming Athletics Championships. These events were advertised at our Junior High Assembly a number of weeks ago with students able to collect permission letters from Junior High Reception. These forms were also emailed to all Junior High students. We are still seeking a number of volunteers who are willing to show their team spirit by attending the event and supporting our athletes. Students have been made aware that volunteer lists will be checked by Year Level Coordinators as students’ attendance will need to be endorsed.
QGSSSA Athletics Carnivals – Thursday 14th September (Female spectators) - Attendance Form
AIC Athletics Carnivals – Friday 6 October (Male Spectators) - Attendance Form
If your child is able to attend, please complete the permission letter and return it to Junior High Reception.
Buses will be booked based on the number of responses received, so we ask that once a commitment is made to attend we don’t have students pull out on the day. Buses will return to campus before the end of the school day.
We look forward to our Junior High students coming together to promote the spirit of the College.
QPS Crime Prevention Unit & Jack Beasley Foundation
Last week the College welcomed members of the Queensland Police Service Crime Prevention Unit along with guest Belinda Beasley from the Jack Beasley Foundation (JBF) to present to our Year 9 and 10 cohorts.
JBF's primary focus is to deliver knife crime education and drive change around youth violence. On 13 December 2019, 17 year old Jack Beasley was fatally stabbed at Surfers Paradise and his parents Belinda and Brett deliver the One Moment Education Program to schools to share and educate youth on the dangers of carrying a knife and the long term effects of youth violence on the offenders, victims, and indirect parties including friends and families.
In the wake of this tragedy, JBF has advocated for changes to legislation resulting in the adoption of 'Jack’s Law'. Jack's Law empowers police officers to detect people carrying knives in public and has come into effect to help combat knife crime across Queensland.
QPS explained the implications of the law and gave a wanding demonstration.
We are very grateful to Sergeant Dan and Ms James (College Counsellor) for organising this presentation.
After School Arrangements
There seems to be an increasingly large number of students who are ‘hanging around’ the College at the end of the school day. In most cases, it seems that parents have instructed their child to go to the library to make a start on their homework until they are picked up. Unfortunately, it seems that some students are instead using this as a time to meet up and socialise. I would take this opportunity to ask you to speak to your child about the expectations outlined below.
When school has finished, day students are to leave the school by 3:30pm unless involved in an official, adult-supervised activity.
After 3:30pm, day students who are still at school must go to one of the following:
the Langer Library; or
an organised cocurricular activity
Students should not wait in the vicinity of the Boarding houses, classroom passageways, locker rooms, ovals or other isolated areas after 3:30pm. The College cannot accept responsibility for the care of day students during these ‘out of hours’ periods if they are not attending one of the above activities. Should parents have an exceptional need for their student to be at College outside the hours of 7:45am and 3:30pm without being involved in any of the above-mentioned activities, either on one occasion or as a regular pattern, notification should be given to and acknowledged by the Head of Junior High so that specific arrangements can be made.
By 3:30pm, Boarders are to return to their respective Boarding environments and are not to loiter in unsupervised areas around school. Boarders may return to the library in either full uniform or clean, neat and modest plain clothes. Staff reserve the right to determine inappropriate or unsafe attire.
Students waiting at the College after 5:00pm due to sports practice or other activities are encouraged to use the College bus stop waiting area. The College bus stop waiting area has seating, is under shelter, is well lit and is on private property.

Performer of The Year Concerto Final
Performer of the Year Concerto Final 2023 included a mammoth program for the St Peters Concerto Orchestra with four concertos followed by the 4th movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.
Our four Concerto Finalists were simply outstanding with awe inspiring performances from memory of some of the most difficult concerto repertoire: Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 – Mulan M, Bartok Viola Concerto – Sam C, Dvorak Cello Concerto – Rebecca K and Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 – Victor H.
As always, it was a very difficult decision for our adjudicators but they were able to name Victor H the 2023 Concerto Performer of the Year. The concert concluded with the combined forces of the St Peters Concerto Orchestra, Brisbane Chamber Choir, Lumens Chamber Choir and our four guest vocalists, Dominique Fegan, Old Scholar Anne Fulton (PY 1988), Bernard Wheaton and Jason Barry-Smith performing the 4th movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. The concert was full of opportunity and will be a life-long memory for all involved.
Primary Twilight at the PAC

What is Swing into Spring?
For those who may be new to the School, or just new to Swing into Spring; here are a few tips to help you plan for the evening
Think of this event as a fun filled indoor picnic – tickets are purchased however no set seating is provided, it’s first in, first served. Either organise a table with friends or join a table with friends you haven’t met yet.
Bring along your picnic basket (which contains your food, drinks and 'supplies' in the way of crockery, cutlery, glasses etc. Whilst everyone caters for themselves, the food you bring is usually shared with others on your table.
Please also remember to bring some small change or your credit card, there are games to be played throughout the evening as well as raffle tickets to be purchased with many wonderful and varied gifts up for grabs, after all this is the major fundraising event for the year for the Music Support Group and all the proceeds are channelled back into helping to enrich the music experience of every child at St Peters.
Tickets are $60.00 for a family, $25.00 for an adult and $10.00 for students. Performing students are free. Raffle tickets can also be purchased in advance. Please secure your tickets early by CLICKING HERE.
If you would like to support the Music Support Group raffles by making a donation in cash or goods, please contact Margaret Hammer at: MusicSupportGroup@stpeters.qld.edu.au Raffle prizes can be delivered to Reception at the PAC up until Thursday 7 September.
It's a fantastic, fun filled family event – we hope you can join us!

WINTER FIXTURES - NETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, HOCKEY & TENNIS
One round to go!
Round 9: Saturday 9 September v St Hilda’s (Home). Please note, St Hilda’s do not have any Hockey teams.
Round 8 was another great round of sport for our girls. Our Tennis, Hockey, Netball and Volleyball teams enjoyed the trip to Ipswich to take on Ipswich Girls Grammar School with some really pleasing results.
Round 9 this Saturday we take on St Hilda’s at our home venues and we are looking forward to the challenge. All the best to our Year 12 girls who will be playing their last games for St Peters in their chosen sports.
‘Focus Round’ this week is for our Volleyball girls; this also double up as ‘Orange Round’. What a wonderful way to end the 2023 season. There will be a bake sale and sausage sizzle with all proceeds going to the Leukaemia Foundation.
Round 8 saw us venture down the freeway to take on the girls from Ipswich Girls' Grammar School, and it was an early start for the teams playing in Round 1.
The 7A team faced a tough challenge as they went up against the undefeated IGGS team. Despite a lot of improvement across the season, the 7A team couldn't cause an upset, highlighting the strength of the IGGS 7A team.
Both the other Year 7 teams, 7B and 7C delivered impressive performances, securing comfortable wins. Their determination and teamwork were evident on the court, marking a successful day for these junior teams.
The 8A team made a strong comeback, getting back into the winners' circle with a solid victory. Their perseverance and skills were on full display, resulting in an exciting win.
Both the 8B and 9B teams, playing their last official games for the season, finishing with great wins. These victories provided a great end to their season and showcased the growth and improvement of these teams throughout the season.
The 9A team, also in their final official game of the season, secured an impressive win. Their season has been a solid one, having lost only one game. This result was a great performance and a fitting end by the 9A team.
The Senior C1 team, fielding a full line-up, cruised to an easy victory. Their teamwork and coordination were evident as they dominated their opponents.
After putting up a good fight, the Senior B team experienced their first loss of the season. It was a tough matchup, but this loss still sees them sitting equal on top of the ladder.
The Senior A team continued their unbeaten streak, showcasing their dominance on the court. Their impressive performance this season continuing from last season sees them on top of the ladder with one game to go.
The Open team faced a challenging match with limited preparation due to illness and absences. Despite a closely fought game, they narrowly went down by three goals.
Back on our home courts, the 10B2 team took on Somerville House and snuck home by one in a very tight game. The Senior C2 team put up a good fight but went down. Coach Ben said after a slow start, the last three quarters were goal for goal.
With one round to go in the QGSSSA Netball 2023 Season, we look forward to welcoming St Hilda’s on Saturday and then celebrating a great season at the breakup next Monday afternoon.
Congratulations to our Round 8 Award Winners - ‘Awarded to the girls who gave the most energy and encouragement!’
