St Peters Fine Young People
I enjoy supporting our St Peters young people by popping into their classrooms, watching their sporting games, being an audience member at their music concerts, or simply interacting with them in the playground. I love watching them excel in their learning or in their chosen cocurricular activities. It is a source of pride and satisfaction seeing our young people grow and become better version of themselves.
It’s not just the obvious achievements of our young people that is a source of pride and satisfaction. For me, it's often the little things; the little gestures; the less obvious things that I observe about St Peters young people that create similar emotions.
In the last week watching some of current Years 8 and 9 students welcome, help and guide our incoming 2023 Year 7 students evoked a sense of pride. Similarly, the comments of the adjudicators at the Concerto Final of the Performer of the Year about how generous and unselfish our students in the orchestra were in genuinely supporting the finalists was heart-warming. I witness it at sporting fixtures on the weekend where our young people helped to pack up the equipment at the conclusion of fixtures without having to be asked. I witnessed it in a class the other week where our young people, as they were leaving at the end of the lesson, spontaneously thanked their teacher for their lesson. I even witnessed it this week when a Year 10 student walked past some litter and stopped, picked it up and put it in the bin. There was no-one around, no-one asked them, no-one was watching. They just did it. That small action, and all the other small moments were as source of satisfaction for me.
Like all of us, our young people don’t always get it right, but there is a generosity of spirit and other-centredness about them that makes me hopeful and hope filled – for their future and our future.

The Love of the Father
At first the barbecue was just a bit smoky. The marinade on the chicken was dripping onto the gas burner and causing flare-ups. But the flare-ups became flames and the fire kept growing. We realised we'd better move the barbie away from the wall so the house didn't catch alight. Dad was getting flustered - this wasn't going to plan. We positioned the flaming barbecue in the middle of the lawn and attempted to smother the flames with the barbecue lid. Thankfully, the flames died down and lunch was saved. It was very well done but most of it was still edible. It turned out that the absorption kibble Dad had put in the drip tray was made from recycled cardboard, which when soaked in oil and set alight burns beautifully!
This episode sticks in my mind as one of the few times Dad didn't seem to be in control. He was always calm and knew what to do. At least, that's what I thought as a child. When I was five and slashed my leg on a barbed-wire fence he calmly packed me into the car and took me to hospital to be stitched up. He was also a great gardener, made furniture, played the organ, towed a caravan, sang in choirs, played tennis, taught us children to drive, was dedicated as a husband and father, and worked faithfully as a pastor in the church. All of this he would do in his quiet, unassuming and capable manner. But this day the barbecue got the better of him. In a way it was refreshing to see Dad not have it all together. It made me appreciate him all the more.
It's been a lonely couple of years since Dad died. The shock of his sudden death has given way to the emptiness of not being able to talk with him. I miss sharing news about his grandchildren and seeking his counsel on pastoral work. But mostly I miss the easy conversation and his deep love. So the memories are precious. I've kept a few items that remind me of him - his Home Communion set, his Akubra, and a couple of ties. I don't even mind if I suddenly shed a tear or two when I remember him wearing that tie at a family wedding.
Whatever our experience of our earthly Father, whether good or bad, we know there will be a time when he won't be around to help us, or to haunt us! This is another reason knowing God as Father is so precious. He is always with us. He loves it when we talk to him. His love and compassion never fail us.
As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. Psalm 103:13
We are always in God's heart, always in God's care. And God never stops loving his children. God's love has remained constant since the beginning when he created humanity. We bear his image, and he’s our doting father, overwhelmed with joy at his creations. Not even humanity's rebellion and disobedience could extinguish God's love. God continued to love us enough to send his own Son to bridge the gap between us and to reunite us with him. God's Son became our brother, so we can be restored as children of God.
I trust on Father’s Day you had opportunity to give thanks for the good things you have received from your Father. Whether you did or not, if you lift your eyes a little higher you’ll recognise the love of your Heavenly Father through his Son Jesus, and see in Jesus the perfect love of our perfect Father. He’s always there for you, all year round.
Blessings Pastor Matt

An invitation to assist with External Assessment
Every year students throughout Queensland are required to sit external assessment for each of the subjects they study. This assessment comprises 50% (for Mathematics and Science subjects) or 25% (for the remainder) of their total grade. These grades then form the students ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank).
To ensure the validity and security of these exams at the various centres around Queensland, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) appoints invigilators to carry out duties on their behalf. Invigilators observe the administration of the tests and report any concerns about the administration of the test to QCAA. Invigilators do not supervise the students sitting the test.
Applications from Queensland community members for invigilator roles are now open. Invigilators are appointed as casual employees.
In brief, invigilators are required to attend allocated assessment sessions at assessment venues to observe the administration of assessments. Invigilators report their observations to the QCAA after each assessment session by completing an online Invigilator report. Invigilators do not move or distribute materials, participate in, or assist with any aspect of the administration of assessments, supervise or have any contact with students, or provide advice or feedback to staff at assessment venues about any aspect of the administration of the assessment.
To be eligible to apply for a QCAA invigilator role, community members must hold a current, paid blue card, or, for teachers with a current Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) registration, an exemption card from Blue Card Services. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and eligible to work in Australia. They must possess personal attributes of discretion, tact, attention to detail, and an ability to maintain confidentiality, as well as meeting straightforward requirements for identification and access to technology.
Submit your application for a QCAA invigilator role via the Assessor Jobs app in the QCAA Portal. Please email externalassessment@qcaa.qld.edu.au or phone (07) 3074 7570 for more information.

‘PROUD TO BE ME, DIGITALLY’ IN ESMART WEEK | SEPTEMBER 5 – 11 2022
This week we recognise National eSmart Week with the theme of ‘Proud to be me, digitally’. It provides an opportunity for our Primary Years students, their families and staff to share knowledge and celebrate being smart, safe and responsible when using digital technology. Our students have had opportunities to explore online safety in their class, as well as at lunchtimes.
Click here to read more about Online Safety Basics from the eSafety Commissioner. This article outlines three key parenting strategies, namely, to be engaged, open and supportive; to set rules; and to use parental control tools.
Thanks must go to a hard-working group of parents in Lower Primary for organising and managing our Father’s Day staff in Belfield Hall on Wednesday.
We were delighted to welcome our dads and grandads into the College yesterday for the Primary Years Father’s Day Breakfast and Chapel. It is such a lovely way to start the day and I would like to especially thank Mrs Hall-Smith, Mrs Staples and Mrs George for their expert organisation of this event. Thanks to Chaplain Kirstin who led us for our Father’s Day Chapel Service following the yummy breakfast. Also, my gratitude goes to our student helpers - we very much appreciate your support and involvement. I hope all our Dads had a wonderful day on Sunday.

Father’s Day Bash! (Taiko Drumming Workshop)
Last Sunday, 40 fathers and friends joined us in the PAC Auditorium for the Father’s Day Bash! The initial concept behind this event was to provide a fun activity for our dad’s and a friend to partake in as a Father’s Day celebration. The 40 places sold out in record time and the event soon transformed into a wonderful community celebration of our fathers and other significant male role models. We were joined by dads, grandfathers, brothers, sons, daughters, and mates.
The afternoon kicked off with a Japanese Taiko drumming workshop conducted by Chie and Steve from Toko-ton-Taiko. The group were taught a traditional Taiko drumming routine in a short one-hour session. Our hosts were amazed at how quickly the group picked up the techniques and learnt the entire routine by rote.
The group then had a Japanese inspired afternoon tea of sushi, sake, and Japanese beer (soft drink for the students!) to entice the tastebuds and bring the group together in a social setting.
The afternoon tea break was followed by a concert from the St Peters Drumline and Senior Percussion Ensemble followed by our fathers and friends Taiko Drumming performance. We were then treated to an Aikido demonstration from members of the Takemusu Aikido Kai and a rousing performance from Toko-ton-Taiko to close out the concert. The concert was a huge success with over 75 family and friends attending to support our dads.
A big thank you to the P&F Committee, Music Support Group and Mr Jacobson for supporting this event. It was a great afternoon of music, food and happy, smiling dads.

What a fantastic experience and we at St Peters are extremely proud of what Harrison has achieved. Well done and again, congratulations!

Sienna spoke of her journey, firstly getting through the tough selection process to make the team, then to Hungary for the pre-tournament, and then on to Greece to take on some incredibly tough teams from around the world. Sienna’s goal is to continue working hard to make further National teams and to go on to represent Australia at the Olympic games.
