A.I. in Education

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training has concluded its Inquiry into the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Australian Education System. Recently the Standing Committee released its Report interestingly titled ‘Study Buddy or Influencer’. The Inquiry considered how Generative A.I. could be used as an educational tool, and what this should look like in an Australian context. It was the Committee’s view that Generative A.I. in education should be a national priority, with a focus on equitable access for all students and educators to high-quality and suitable Generative A.I. education products.

The Committee has made 25 recommendations in their Report that focus on:

• maximising the opportunities of GenAI education-specific tools;
• promoting quality education products;
• supporting the implementation of the Australian GenAI in Schools Framework;
• integrating A.I. literacy across all subjects in the next school curriculum review cycle;
• promoting a range of safeguards and developing standards and frameworks.

Over the past year it has been interesting to have the occasional conversation with parents on the Sporting sidelines or at an interval during a Music Concert about how they are using A.I. in their workplaces. In an educational setting Generative A.I. has the potential to help personalise learning for students and to alleviate teacher workloads.

In line with the College’s Strategic Pillar of Innovation we need to ‘embrace the possibilities’ that A.I. will present and what it means for the what, why, how and who of education, whilst being mindful of the challenges and risks around the use of it. David Brooks, a Columnist for The New York Times offered these thoughts - ‘A.I. will force us humans to double down on those talents and skills that only humans possess. The most important thing about A.I. may be that it shows us what it can’t do, and so reveals who we are and what we have to offer’.

For our Year 12s, the Class of 2024, the end of their St Peters journey is in sight. They have just a few weeks of classes before they undertake their final exams. Our Year 12s have been well-prepared for this experience, and I encourage them to remain focused and to build on the solid foundations they have established and maintain a steady, consistent, diligent approach to their studies in the coming days and weeks – they are encouraged to ‘Finish Well’.

As part of our continuous improvement process, I wish to provide opportunities for parents (Prep to Year 12), and students (Years 5 to 12) to provide us with feedback relating to their views of St Peters Lutheran College across a wide range of areas. As per previous years, this research is being conducted by MMG Education, a specialist education consultancy that works with schools in the areas of school strategic reviews and stakeholder satisfaction. MMG’s client schools include many of the leading schools across Australia. Parents have been invited to complete a questionnaire over a two week period. Students will complete their questionnaires in Week 1 or Week 2 of Term 4. On Friday 27 September, MMG Education emailed you an invitation to participate in the review and provide you with your confidential, secure access to your questionnaire. To ensure confidentiality and to encourage frank and full expression of views:

• All responses will be de-identified;
• The data will be reported back to the College in aggregated form only; and
• All data collected by MMG Education will remain under its control and archived according to research protocols. The College will not be able to access it.

At the conclusion of the research period, MMG Education will provide the College with a report. This report will then help to guide the ongoing development and improvement of St Peters. If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact dhoc@stpeters.qld.edu.au.

As part of a treasured Year 12 tradition at St Peters, each graduating class selects a cause to support during their final year. This year, the Class of 2024 is raising awareness and funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

On Friday 11 October, their last day of school, our Year 12 cohort will be participating in the World’s Greatest Shave to support the fight against blood cancer. Students will be colouring their hair in purple and pink, or trimming, cutting, or shaving their hair to help make a difference. Each student is aiming to raise a minimum of $50.00 to take part.

As we mark Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage you to support our Year 12s and this important cause. Blood cancer affects 1 in 12 Australians, and your donation, no matter the size, can have a big impact.

Celebrate the new season in style! The St Peters Spring Lunch returns this year on Friday 18 October at Victoria Park, Herston from 11:15am – 2:30pm.

The Solo Festival is the St Peters version of an eisteddfod. Students are invited to perform, listen to their peers and receive feedback from renowned performing musicians and educators, participating in either a competitive or non-competitive section.

In addition to the many benefits of playing a musical instrument, students can build their skills and self- confidence through public performance. It is also great practice for students who are sitting upcoming exams. Students also have the option to use their Solo Festival performance as an audition for 2024 Music Ensembles (please note that auditions for Chorale, Soloists and Symphonic Winds will be held separately).

All students will receive a certificate of participation and a specialist adjudicator’s comment sheet. Additionally, students may choose to enter the competitive section, where the winner will be awarded the perpetual trophy for the section, which will be displayed during the year in the department display cabinets in the PAC foyer. The winning student will also receive a trophy as a memento.

Sections will be run in lieu of afternoon instrumental ensemble rehearsals in Term 4 Weeks 5 and 6. Each section will commence at 3:30pm. The Solo Festival Timetable is here – please note that sections may not be on the same afternoon as your usual rehearsal. Students are expected to stay for the entirety of their section and to be a supportive audience member.

With the exception of percussionists, each student is asked to perform one piece only. Percussionists will be expected to perform once piece each on a tuned (mallets or timpani) and untuned (snare drum or drum kit) instrument.

The time limit for sub-school sections are:

• Senior School maximum of 8 minutes
• Junior High and Upper Primary maximum of 6 minutes

A rehearsal time is offered for students (not including pianists) and further notification regarding rehearsal times will be sent via email closer to the Festival.

Cost per student:

• Entry Fee for Pianists $20.00
• Entry Fee for all other instruments/voice $30.00
• (accompanist provided for both performance and rehearsal)

The 2024 Japan Study Tour during the September school holidays was a truly enriching experience. Over 17 days, we journeyed across Japan, exploring cities like Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka, Nara and Kyoto. Along the way, students immersed themselves in various cultural activities, from attending a traditional Geisha performance and visiting historic shrines and temples to meeting Nara's famous wild deer and discovering modern art galleries. A highlight was the three-day homestay at our sister school, Toho High School, where students experienced Japanese daily life firsthand and forged new friendships. It was an educational and unforgettable experience for everyone.

This week, our students have been enthusiastically sharing stories from their spring holidays while eagerly anticipating the exciting learning experiences that Term 4 will bring.

We are particularly looking forward to the Year 6 PYP Exhibition on Thursday, 24 October. Many of our Year 6 students have shown exceptional dedication by continuing to work on their personal projects over the holidays, and we can't wait to see the culmination of their hard work. Additionally, our Year 3 and 4 students are eagerly awaiting their camp this term, an exciting opportunity that continues to build resilience, grit and persistence. 

There are many wonderful events planned throughout Term 4, and I look forward to seeing you at these important moments in our school community.

Hip Hop Extravaganza

The Primary Years completed Term 3 with a bang! As we enjoyed a Hip Hop concert as the culminating activity for their PE Dance unit.

The Hip Hop Extravaganza led by our Year 4 and Year 6 students was a vibrant and energetic event that truly showcased the students' creativity and enthusiasm. From their confident performances to their ability to work together as a team, the students displayed both talent and dedication. It was wonderful to see their hard work come to life on stage, with each student contributing their unique flair to the performance. The concert not only highlighted their growing skills in rhythm and movement but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration. A big thank you to Mr Shields and Mr Memedovski for their work in planning and coordinating this event in the Primary Years.

Welcome to Term 4, which promises to be a busy and action-packed end to our year. There was a great deal of excitement and energy in the air on Tuesday morning as students caught up on their holiday adventures. It has been great to see students back on site. Their presence certainly brings our campus to life. With a full calendar of events including awards ceremonies, presentations, and a variety of sporting and cocurricular activities, there is much to look forward to. Whilst assessments will keep our young learners on their toes, I am confident they will rise to the challenge with enthusiasm, in keeping with our College Motto, 'Plus Ultra – Ever Higher’. I look forward to connecting with you throughout the term and working together to make this a memorable conclusion to the year.

Year 9 Ironbark Departure

On Tuesday morning we farewelled 9 J & K as they left on their Ironbark adventure. It was a pleasure to see the genuine excitement and enthusiasm for this transformative experience as students departed. A reminder that an Indooroopilly staff regularly travel to Ironbark so if you have any items that need to be delivered for students currently at Ironbark, please drop them into Junior High Reception.

Parent Teacher Interviews

As you are aware, next Tuesday 10 October we will hold our Parent-Teacher Interview Evening for Years 7 and 9 in the Dohler classrooms. These interviews are a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet with teachers and discuss progress, areas requiring attention and strategies for ongoing improvement.

This is a great opportunity to connect with the Junior High community, support each other and provide you with an opportunity to give feedback to the Head of Junior High and team. On 11 September, the Year 11 cohort participated in the RYDA - Safe Driving Workshop. This workshop is an annual event at the College and is one part of our commitment to ensuring students are continually contemplating the impact of decision making as they begin to gain drivers licenses and travel with their friends in cars. The remarkable engagement during the event this year, highlighted the groups commitment to understanding and promoting road safety. From the outset, students demonstrated a keen interest in the workshop’s content, actively participating in discussions and activities designed to deepen their understanding of safe driving practices.

The workshop, known for its interactive approach, captivated the students through a series of engaging sessions, including real-life case studies, simulations, and group discussions. Students eagerly engaged with the various elements of the workshop, from analysing crash statistics to participating in practical exercises that illustrated the consequences of risky driving behaviours. Their enthusiasm was evident in their thoughtful questions and the lively contributions that ensued during the discussions.

Particularly notable was the high level of interaction during the guest speakers who have survived road trauma. The students approached these discussions with a mix of curiosity and seriousness, recognising the gravity of the scenarios presented. This hands-on approach not only reinforced theoretical knowledge but also allowed students to experience firsthand the impact of decisions made behind the wheel.

Overall, the Year 11 cohort’s engagement at the RYDA Safe Driving Workshop was exemplary, reflecting their serious consideration of road safety issues and their readiness to be proactive in promoting safe driving practices within their community.

The Primary Twilight at the PAC on Thursday 29 August showcased Cocurricular Music in the Primary Years. All primary ensembles - Poco Voce, Animato Voce, Super Strings, Scherzo Strings, Presto Players, Bella Voce, Forte Voce, Sinfonietta Strings and Concert Band 2 - gave terrific performances in a very entertaining evening of music.

Thank-you to our Primary Years Music Captains, Samuel and Dhretii, who compered so confidently, the senior mentors and accompanists for the musical support, and the choir conductors for their musical leadership.

St Peters in Concert was held on Sunday 8 September. It was a veritable smorgasboard of musical styles as nearly 20 ensembles from the Junior High and Senior School performed in two consecutive concerts – Matinee (2:00pm), and Soiree (5:00pm).

The concerts showcased the depth and breadth of the Music Program in Years 7 – 12. It was also a wonderful opportunity for the audience and ensembles members to hear and appreciate the musical achievements of ensembles from different areas of the program.

Prep – Years 6 HPE Swimming

Years 4-6 SPORT FOR LIFE TERM 4

On Friday 11 October our final block of Sport Life will commence for our Years 4-6 students. Options this term include Cricket, Volleyball, Handball, Girls Football, Australian Rules, Yoga, Mindfulness and Swimming! Students that swim will need to ensure they have their swim kit with them on Fridays.

We're excited to introduce Australian Rules Football to our Primary Years Sports program! Training for Years 4-6 will start in Term 4, with a goal of forming a team for AIC in Term 1, 2025. Year 6 students will also benefit as they move up to the Year 7 team next year. This energetic sport is perfect for developing skills, resilience, and teamwork, while enhancing fitness, agility, and strategic thinking. Join the St Peters Club Water Polo program! It's a fantastic way for our students to dive into one of Australia’s fastest-growing Sports. Our program helps girls build skills and strategies while making new friends. Next Tuesday, 8 October, our girls will have a friendly Touch fixture against Brigidine College at Harts Road Oval from 3:30pm-4:30 pm. This game will provide valuable match experience, with coaching and support throughout, as the girls prepare for the 2024 Primary All Schools Tournament, scheduled for the weekend of 19-20 October. Parents are encouraged to come along and support! Sessions continue on Tuesday, 15 October, leading up to the tournament. Further details about the tournament will be shared soon.

Congratulations to the St Peters Track & Field team for their outstanding efforts at the QGSSSA Championships at the end of last term. It was one of the closest competitions in recent years, and all girls represented the College with pride and determination.

Our third-place finish in the Stephens Cup, just 26 points behind winners Moreton Bay College, shows how closely contested the day was.

A special mention must go to our 13 Years, 15 Years, and Opens teams for securing Age Championship Pennants – a fantastic achievement that speaks volumes about their hard work and dedication.

ROWING 

The Girls Rowing Season 2024 concluded at the end of Term 3 at the Queensland Schools Championship Regatta (States) that took place at QSRC Wyaralong on Saturday 14 Septemberto Monday 16 September. Originally planned to take place in Rockhampton, States was relocated to Wyaralong following significant flood damage to the regatta course on the Fitzroy River. I want to thank the Rowing PSG and the rowing parent community for your patience and support when plans for States changed so dramatically at very late notice. A multi-day regatta at Wyaralong is challenging due to athletes, parents and coaches commuting to and from the event daily around the long racing schedule each day. My deepest appreciation to all who made the trek each day and for your collaboration to ensure all the athletes had transport to/from all their events.

The highlight of the Championship regatta was our First VIII achieving second place in this penultimate event. Congratulations to the crew and Coach John Pettigrew.

CBSQ Basketball

At the end of Term 3, our Open Basketball team proudly represented St Peters at the CBSQ Tournament, Queensland's premier school Basketball competition. The team performed exceptionally well, securing the Division 3 championship. This is a particularly significant achievement, as it marks our first participation in the Opens CBSQ in over five years. The win has now qualified us to compete in Division 2 next year, which shows the growing strength of our Basketball program. A special thanks goes to Matt Allen-Ankins for coaching the girls this tournament, this would not have been possible without him.

Congratulations to Sienna O (Year 12) who recently represented Australia at the World Aquatics Women’s U18 Water Polo Championships in China.

Congratulations to Bronte G (Year 10) who represented PNG at the Oceania Regional U21 World Cup Qualifiers in Cook Islands over the holidays where she played against Fiji, Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga.

Congratulations to Tabby N (Year 11) who represented Queensland U17 at the 2024 Australian Youth Volleyball Championships in Bendigo at the start of the holidays. The QLD team placed third.

Well done to Laura M (Year 9) who represented Victoria at the National State Water Polo Championships on the Gold Coast last week.

Boys Weekly Sport

Welcome back after the September holiday break! I hope all boys are well refreshed and ready to take on Term 4 Sport with enthusiasm and high energy. As we look to Term 4, we also acknowledge our Tennis award winners from Term 3. Congratulations to our AIC boys on a brilliant season of Tennis. St Peters has come away with 7 premierships this year in the AIC Tennis competition as well as the aggregate. Thank you to all the students, coaches and parents for a fantastic 2024 Tennis season.

Our Track & Field athletes have also been busy this week making their final preparations for the 2024 AIC Track & Field Championships which will be conducted at QSAC this Thursday 3 October and Friday 4 October. We will be sure to keep everyone updated on the final result after this week’s AIC Track & Field Championships.

Over the holidays our Rowing Season concluded at the Queensland Schools Championship Regatta at QSRC Wyaralong (full details below). I would like to congratulate all the young men for their countless hours on both the boats and in the gym for this season, with training starting back in Term 1. With several top 10 place finishes our rowing program under the tutelage of Mrs Helen Allard is a joy to behold.

Our St Peters Boys’ Water Polo players are preparing for the commencement of training in Week 2 for the 2024 AIC Water Polo Gala Day to be held on Sunday 20 October. Rowing News

The Boys Rowing Season 2024 concluded at the end of Term 3 at the Queensland Schools Championship Regatta (States) that took place at QSRC Wyaralong on Saturday 14 September to Monday 16 September. Originally planned to take place in Rockhampton, States was relocated to Wyaralong following significant flood damage to the regatta course on the Fitzroy River. I want to thank the Rowing PSG and the rowing parent community for your patience and support when plans for States changed so dramatically at very late notice. A multi-day regatta at Wyaralong is challenging due to athletes, parents and coaches commuting to and from the event daily around the long racing schedule each day. My deepest appreciation to all who made the trek each day and for your collaboration to ensure all the athletes had transport to/from all their events.

The standard of racing throughout the regatta was extremely high and I want to commend the following crews progressing through to finals –

The highlight of the regatta was the very creditable effort of the St Peters Schoolboy Eight of Oliver H, Aidan P, Lucas C, Matt J, Sam B, Dheeraj C, Nima G, Joshua W and Dominic P (cox) placing 9th. The Championship Eight event is the penultimate rowing event in any regatta – crews are typically a schools most senior and experienced oarsmen. The St Peters crew are all in Year 10 and only began rowing in sweep (vs sculling) boats during rowing camp in April. To have progressed through to the final of this event is an extraordinary performance and bodes very well for the future.

In closing, the most FUN event of the regatta was the Mixed 8+ sprints in which St Peters Boys and Girls Senior Sheds came together to create 3 crews for some fast and furious sprint racing.

Matchday expectations 

A reminder that all St Peters boys do need to be dressed correctly at both AIC training and at AIC games. All uniform items can be purchased from Shop45 or via School Locker, please refer to the website for opening hours. For matchdays enclosed footwear must be worn to games, no slides or Crocs are to be worn at St Peters or associated AIC schools.

ST PETERS STUDENT SPECTATORS ON GAMEDAYS

Should any St Peters student be attending a St Peters sporting event/game outside of normal College hours, it is expected that they are dressed in St Peters formal uniform. Should a student not be wearing the correct attire when attending a sporting event/game, they may be asked to leave the venue.

AEL Minecraft Capture The Flag National Competition Champions

Over the past few weeks, one of our Minecraft teams competed online in Saturday play-offs against teams from across Australia. The Australian eSports League promotes safe computer use for Australian students. Our team were able to rotate players for the playoffs, allowing more of our team member the opportunity to compete in this event. St Peters won every match in the play-offs, earning them prime position in the Grand Finals. Their winning streak was not broken, even in the finals, when they decisively won these challenging matches 2:0. Congratulations to the team of Arki S, Erika W, Gus H, Alex H, Alex B, Veer S, Benjamin B, Xander R and coach Lachlan.

FTC and FLL Robotics Holiday Build Sessions

Robotics students from Years 5 to 12 participated in holiday training sessions to prepare for their upcoming competitions in Term 4. The theme for FIRST robotics competition this year is water, so our games focus on this topic.

Years 5 and 6 students compete in FIRST LEGO League. This year’s game is called Submerged. Students have only two months to design, build and code their robots which need to complete 15 separate challenges. Beyond the robot competition, teams must also prepare an Innovation Project related to the theme of water. Our teams have been investigating ghost nets, microplastics in the ocean and finding solutions to solve these global challenges. Their Brisbane Regional competition will take place at the Southbank TAFE on Saturday October 12. Best of luck teams #2858 Cookie Embers and #2859 Toffee Embers. Years 7-12 students compete in FIRST Tech Challenge robotics competition. The 2024/25 game is called Into the Deep. Robots must collect samples from across the field and return them to set locations. At the end of matches, the robots can even lift themselves off the playing field to score bonus points. Our teams use vision systems to identify field location, autonomous programming, CAD modelling, laser cut parts and 3D printing to construct fast and reliable robots. Our qualification competitions are in November and we hope to have teams qualified for the National Finals in Sydney in December. FTC Robotics Academy

FIRST Tech Challenge rookie team, #25827 Flaming Marshmallows attended an intensive three-day robotics training session to prepare them for the upcoming competition. During the first week of school holidays, the FIRST Tech Challenge Academy brought together 50 eager students from 8 different schools for an exciting robotics adventure. The program offered participants a chance to dive into the world of STEM, designing and programming their own robots to take on fun challenges. Students collaborated, learned, and competed, showcasing their problem-solving and engineering skills.

Thanks to the incredible support of one of our sponsors, Battery World, and the FTC robotics team Bot Builders, the event was a huge success. Their contributions made it possible for students to access top-quality equipment and resources, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the experience.

The school holiday program wasn’t just about learning—it was also a lot of fun! Participants had the opportunity to make new friends, explore their creativity, and get hands-on with robotics, leaving them with skills and memories that will last a lifetime.

It was a big three days, totalling over 24 hours … Great effort Year 7 students Lily B, Nickolas M, Isaac Y, Vraj P and Marcus V.

Hatch BYKTWD

Four of our FIRST Tech Challenge team members presented a robotics program for children of Hatch staff at their annual Bring Your Kid to Work Day during the holidays. Hatch is an international consulting engineering and project implementation company and is one of the major supporters of our Robotics teams. There were over 120 children attending this event plus parents and Hatch staff. Activities included: an egg drop challenge, live musicians, VR experience as well as our own St Peters Robotics activity. We challenged visitors to design a futuristic robot, design a LEGO construction, drive our robots, see our students designing our next robots in CAD and learn more about the FIRST robotics competitions.

FPS National Finals Qualification

Recently, we received the exciting news about our Future Problem Solving (FPS) teams. All our teams competed very well this year but these two teams managed to reach the top 10-15% of the hundreds of teams from across Australia seeking qualification at the National Finals. This means that two of our teams will be flying to Melbourne on October 18 to compete against the best of the best. The next few weeks will be spent preparing for the big competition in hopes of moving to the next step, the International Finals in Bloomington, Indiana, in 2025. FPS is an international academic competition that is now 50 years old. Competitors are presented an unseen scenario based 20-30 years in the future on a known topic, they must find solutions to solve challenges they identify and then present their solutions in written and through an in-person presentation. Autonomous Transport is the topic for the National Finals.
