Finishing Well
Welcome to Term 4. A special welcome is extended to those families joining our community for the first time this term.
For our Year 12s, the Class of 2022, the end of their St Peters journey is in sight. They have just a few weeks of classes before they undertake their final exams. Our Year 12s have been well-prepared for this experience, and I encourage them to remain focused and to build on the solid foundations they have established and maintain a steady, consistent, diligent approach to their studies in the coming days and weeks – they are encouraged to ‘Finish Well’.
In fact, as we commence Term 4, all of our students are encouraged to ‘finish well’. At Junior High and Senior School Assemblies in the next couple of weeks I will be speaking to students about the importance of finishing the year strongly and positively. I will be emphasising that it is important that we work with the same endeavour right to the end; that it is important to ‘finish well’.
In sport it is the athletes that are able to sustain their performance right to the end, that are able to ‘finish well’ who are the ones that produce their personal best performances. We can learn a lot from those athletes who 'finished well’ in their events.
Just like athletes who achieve Personal Bests by ‘finishing well’, we need to ensure that we achieve learning personal bests this year by ‘finishing well’. So, what does ‘finishing well’ mean for our young people?
To ‘finish well’ is to-
Continue to apply yourself fully in class. Stay focused, ask questions, complete the set work.
Do your homework. Use homework as an opportunity to consolidate your learning in your various subjects.
In addition to homework have a study plan where you are regularly revising your work. Don’t leave it to the last minute.
Do your very best on assessment tasks, tests and exams. And finally;
Continue to do all the little things right, like arrive for class on time and wear your uniform correctly. It’s amazing what a big difference the little things make.
As we begin the final term of the 2022 school year I encourage our students to set their goals high, exhibit a Plus Ultra attitude in all that they do and make the most of the opportunities that St Peters affords them.
To all of our students, now is the time to ‘finish well’.

What a great way to kick start the 2023 school year!
Dale Carnegie is delighted to offer 2023 Years 9-12 students an opportunity to participate in Generation Next at St Peters in the January 2023 school holidays. Generation Next is an adaptation of the world-famous Dale Carnegie Course and has successfully been run at St Peters every year since 2018.
Specifically designed for young adults, Generation Next runs globally and is an interactive and hands-on program designed to prepare young people for the real world. It will give students the skills they need to reach their goals and live up to their full potential – at school, home and in their futures.
Generation Next focuses on five key areas and teaches students skills that will last a lifetime:
Building Self-confidence
Enhancing Communication Skills
Interpersonal Skill Development
Teamwork and Leadership Skills
Effective Attitude Management & Stress Control
Generation Next is an exciting and fun program that encourages participation and uses guided discussion, group work, role playing, verbal reports and awards for outstanding contribution. These methods ensure students graduate from the program with sound knowledge and real skills. Upon completion, participants will receive an internationally recognised certificate which will enhance their school leaving testimonials and resume. Note that Generation Next counts towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award (skills section).
Places will be limited as this will be the one and only Generation Next program that will be running at St Peters in 2023.

Primary Years
Primary Years News
I trust that you and your family have had a relaxing and restful break and that you are ready for the new school term. Our students have spent this week discussing their spring holidays and looking at the new and exciting learning experiences they will engage with in Term 4. We look forward with excitement to our Year 6 PYP Exhibition on Thursday 20 October, and I know that many of our Year 6 students have continued working on their personal projects over the holidays. Our Year 4 students also look forward to their camp this term, after it was postponed in Term 1 due to the delay in commencing the school year.
I look forward to seeing you at the many upcoming events that take place throughout Term 4.
A very BIG WELCOME to the four new families who have commenced in the Primary Years. Dayan and Jasper in Prep, Seth in Year 1 and Hugo in Year 6. We hope you have enjoyed your first week as you commence your learning journey in the Primary Years at St Peters.
Faith and Service in the Primary Years
During Term 3, our Primary Years Faith and Service Leaders - Georgia, Isabel, Erin and Finn - worked tirelessly as they organised a food drive to further support families in our community who remain in need. Georgia and Finn delivered the food drive collection to Inala Family Support Service early in the holiday break. They filled a ute and the entire back seat together with Finn’s family car! Liza Dykstra (Family Support Coordinator) was extremely grateful for the donations and gave these students a tour of their facility, highlighting how empty their pantry was getting. What a great example of these young leaders developing as internationally minded members of our community through their care and open-mindedness.
video library which is the full back catalogue of all of Justin's parenting webinars (such as Little People, Big Feelings, Helping your Child Manage Anxiety, Building Resilience and many more).
All these resources are based on positive psychology methodologies to support children and get them to thrive. If you are yet to sign up, please do so here.
I found this article from Justin Is playtime dead, a particularly helpful reminder as we head into the warmer months. In a society where anxiety and depression are constant reminders of our children’s psychopathology, free play and unstructured playtimes continue to remain an easy way to assist our children in developing as well-rounded and resourceful contributors to society.
I am continually grateful for the work that our Primary Years teachers do in creating such exciting and engaging learning experiences for the youngest students at St Peters, and I look forward to sharing Term 4 with you all.

Outstanding Service Awards
In the final Junior High Year Level Assembly in Term 3 students were reminded to nominate for consideration for the Outstanding Service Awards for 2022. Earlier this year they were emailed an explanation of the award and with a nomination form attached. These awards recognise students who have actively demonstrated our Christian values of Respect, Care and Concern for others through their outstanding individual contributions and service to Junior High and/or the broader College community.
All students in Years 7-9 are eligible to be considered for these awards and they can self-nominate or a staff member can nominate them. Nominations might be based on the fact that the student has:
A record of significant and sustained service during the year - such as volunteering for special events (e.g. Open Days, JH Welcome Day, Social Justice Week, Parent breakfasts, Kaleidoscope ushering etc.) either within Junior High or the College as a whole.
A student who has initiated and led a particular service project or fund-raising initiative within the College.
The students who are nominated are usually recognised as being an inspiration and role model to others through his or her service to Junior High or the general College community.
All nominations will be considered on their individual merits by the Junior High Academic Care and Wellbeing Leadership group, consisting of Head of Junior High, Deputy Head of Junior High and the Year-level Coordinators.
Each year we select between three and eight recipients at each year level in Junior High. It is a very prestigious award with very high standards and expectations - and only a handful of the students who are nominated are successful in being selected. The successful Award recipients at each year level will be announced at the Junior High Awards Ceremony next month.
We realise there have not been as many opportunities this year but encourage students to apply if they think they think they have shown service and commitment to Junior High or the College this year. Applications are due at Junior High Reception by 3:45pm - Tuesday 1 November. Those students currently at Ironbark will also have the opportunity to complete forms. Information and an application form can be found on Firefly by clicking on this link.
YEAR 9 IRONBARK DEPARTURE
On Tuesday morning we farewelled 9J & 9K as they left on their Ironbark adventure. A reminder that an Indooroopilly staff member usually travels to Ironbark each week so if you have any items that needs to be delivered for students currently at Ironbark, please drop them into Junior High Reception.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
As you are aware, next Tuesday 11 October we will hold our Parent-Teacher Interview Evening in the Dohler classrooms for Years 9 - 11. These interviews are a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet with their student’s teachers and discuss progress, areas requiring attention and strategies for ongoing improvement. These evenings are an important and effective way of parents meeting numerous teachers in a short time. We acknowledge that not all families will be able to be catered for in the one evening and remind parents that they are also able to contact teachers at any time throughout the year via email or telephone should they have any questions or concerns. Please direct any queries to Academic Operations (A.Operations@stpeters.qld.edu.au)
PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
A number of Junior High classes will have pre-service teachers attached to them this term. Gaining work experience ‘in the field’ is a mandatory part of teacher training and involves a number of stages or blocks of time. Pre-Service teachers work through stages from spending time purely observing classes up to ‘internships’ where they are given provisional teacher registration and are able to teach, assess and report on units of work. Throughout all of these stages pre-service teachers are supervised, monitored and work closely with experienced teachers. Should you have any queries or concerns please contact the supervising teacher involved.
UNIFORM REMINDER
Shop 45 has sock garters available for purchase and all boys are asked to purchase a pair. Alternatively, they could make their own from elastic. This is the easiest way to ensure their socks remain up and tidy throughout the day.
AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS – RULE REMINDER
At the end of last term there seemed to be an increasingly large number of students who were ‘hanging around’ the College at the end of the school day, not being picked up until 5:00pm or waiting for training or an event to start after 5:00pm. In most cases it seems that parents had instructed their child to go to the library to make a start on their homework until they are picked up. Unfortunately, it seems that some students were instead using this as a time to meet up and socialise. I would take this opportunity to ask you to speak to your child about the expectations outlined below and would encourage you to contact the library on 3377 6273 from time to time ensure they are where they are supposed to be.
When school has finished, day students are to leave the school by 3.30pm unless involved in an official, adult-supervised activity.
After 3.30pm, day students who are still at school must go to one of the following:
the Langer Library; or
an organised cocurricular activity
Students should not wait in the vicinity of the boarding houses, classroom passageways, locker areas, ovals or other isolated areas after 3.30pm. The College cannot accept responsibility for the care of day students during these ‘out of hours’ periods if they are not attending one of the above activities.
Students waiting at the College after 5.00pm due to sports practice or other activities are encouraged to use the College bus stop waiting area.
Students must also leave school in full school or training uniform. No students should be getting changed into free dress at the end of the day to leave school.
Congratulations to St Peters student Ting ( Year 9) who won first prize in Next Gen section of The Brisbane Portrait Prize.
The exhibition runs at the Brisbane Powerhouse from 29 September to 30 October.
The exhibition will showcase the 60 artists who were selected as Finalists including 56 entrants from the main competition and four from the Next Gen Competition. We’d love for you to join us for this celebration of art, Brisbane artists and the characters who make our city, what it is. You need to reserve a time online to attend.
St Peters Music Support Group Meeting – Tuesday 11 October 7.00pm
The next Music Support Group Meeting will be held on Tuesday 11 October in the Red Music Room (PAC L1.7) commencing at 7.00pm. All are welcome to join us for this meeting in person or online via Teams. Click here to join the meeting
I hope that see you there,
Rob Catchpoole Music Support Group President
Solo Festival
St Peters Solo Festival 2022 (Monday 31 October – Thursday 10 November)
One of the exciting Music Department events in Term 4 is the St Peters Solo Festival. All instrumental and voice students who are part of the Music Department Ensemble program are invited to perform, listen to their peers and receive feedback from renowned performing musicians and educators, participating in either a competitive or non-competitive section.
In addition to the many benefits of playing a musical instrument, students can build their skills and self-confidence through public performance. It is also great practice for students who are sitting upcoming exams. Students also have the option to use their Solo Festival performance as an audition for 2023 Music Ensembles (please note that auditions for Chorale, Vox Camerata, Soloists and Symphonic Winds will be held separately).
All students will receive a certificate of participation and a specialist adjudicator’s comment sheet. Additionally, students may choose to enter the competitive section, where the winner will be awarded the perpetual trophy for the section, which will be displayed during the year in the department display cabinets in the PAC foyer. The winning student will also receive a trophy as a memento.
We look forward to a wonderful week of performances,
Mr Deacon, Mr Sutch and Mrs Taylor Co-Directors of Cocurricular Music

Girls Sport
Girls Sport Coordinator – Anne-Marie Champion
One of my friends asked, "Why do you pay so much money for your kid to play sports”? Well I have a confession to make; I don't pay for my kid to do sports. Personally, I couldn't care less about what sport they do.
So, if I am not paying for sports what am I paying for?
I pay for those moments when my kid becomes so tired they want to quit but don't.
I pay for those days when my kid comes home from school and is "too tired" to go to their training but they go anyway.
I pay for my kid to learn to be disciplined, focused and dedicated.
I pay for my kid to learn to take care of her body and equipment.
I pay for my kid to learn to work with others and to be a good teammate, gracious in defeat, and humble in success.
I pay for my kid to learn to deal with disappointment when she doesn’t get that win or championship she’d hoped for, but still she goes back week after week giving it her best shot.
I pay for my kid to learn to make and accomplish goals.
I pay for my kid to respect, not only themselves, but other players, officials, and coaches.
I pay for my kid to learn that it takes hours and hours, years and years of hard work and practice to create a champion and that success does not happen overnight.
I pay for my kid to be proud of small achievements, and to work towards long term goals.
I pay for the opportunity my kid has and will have to make life-long friendships, create lifelong memories, to be as proud of her achievements as I am.
I pay so that my kid can be out on the court instead of in front of a screen...
...I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for sports; I pay for the opportunities that sports provides my kid with to develop attributes that will serve her well throughout her life and give her the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!
Nikki Jesse, Aug 31 (Dover, Florida)
Welcome back, I hope you all enjoyed a restful holiday break and are ready to go for a short but busy Term 4!

St Peters represented at World Junior Open Water Championships
It was fantastic to have a St Peters Year 12 student recently compete at the FINA World Junior Open Water Championships in Beau Vallon, Seychelles. Over the September holiday break Robbie T travelled as a member of the Australian Dolphins to Seychelles to compete in the 10km event and the Open Mixed 4 x 1500m Relay.
With a fantastic performance of resilience and tenacity Robbie placed 8th overall at the World Junior Championships 10km. He and his team members then backed up to place 7th overall in the 4 x 1500m relay. To finish in the top 10 in the world in both is a magnificent performance and we are all very proud of Robbie’s effort.

Reunion Weekend 2022
The first weekend of the holidays was spent celebrating our Old Scholars and reminiscing about the old school days. Over 70 Old Scholars returned to campus to engage in a Chapel Service, School Tours and enjoy a buffet lunch.
A huge thank you to our current Seniors Cherise M, Sophie W, Milly T and Jiya B. The Old Scholars love to chat to current students and hear about College life.
