Today the College Prefects for the coming 12 months were installed into their office at a special ceremony in front of their peers and parents in the Dron Auditorium. Thirty-three young people were commissioned to serve as Prefects.
In my remarks to the students I reminded our newly installed Student Leaders that the College’s philosophy and model of leadership is focused on Servant Leadership. Servant Leadership can be best expressed as using your gifts and talents to meet a need in our community, and in doing so make a difference to our College and the students and staff of it. This will take many shapes and forms, and will depend both on the context in which our leaders are serving, and their different gifts and abilities.
Leadership at St Peters is also about Leadership through Teams in a spirit of service, teamwork, and community. This is reflected in the fact that 33 young people were appointed to lead as Prefects. Whatever they achieve, whatever difference they make, they will do it together. The anthropologist Margaret Mead was right when she said; ‘Never doubt the power of a small group of people to change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’
I also had the opportunity to make a link with our past and remind our student leaders of the legacy they take over from those that have gone before them by using the words of the College’s second Headmaster Mr Bill Lohe from 1965 when he installed the Prefects for that year - a group of hopeful and hope-filled young men and women just like the 2022 Prefects – "In installing you as Prefects you have an important responsibility. The tone of the school, the pattern of behaviour is largely set by you. Your conduct, your dress, your speech, your devotion to duty, your loyalty to the school and to all it stands for, will be accepted as the standard …. yours is a position of trust, of responsibility, of service, of work, of duty …. every rule and regulation and every service required of the smallest boy and girl in the school is required of you – to an even greater degree."
The expectation of leadership is not restricted to those students who were installed as a Prefect. Not everyone can be in a formal leadership position, but every one of our students can influence and make a difference; each student has the opportunity to show the fine qualities that they have. Their different strengths mean that all bring something very special to St Peters, and together they can have a profound impact on our community.
I wish all of our student leaders God’s richest blessing as they serve our community, and I look forward to seeing the difference they make as together we strive to make St Peters a place where each member of our community can flourish.

Doesn’t a bishop move diagonally?
At the end of this year, I will be moving to Adelaide to take up the role of the Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Australia and New Zealand. On Friday 1 October, the tri-annual gathering of Lutheran Church delegates from both sides of the Tasman elected Pastor Paul Smith to be the Church’s new Bishop. This is the first time that the Lutheran Church has elected their Bishop from a school ministry. In that decision, I see a significant confirmation of the importance of Lutheran Schools in the work of the Lutheran Church in Australia. It is a great privilege to serve in this role.
So, what does a Bishop do? The chess players would keenly say, moves diagonally! In the Lutheran tradition in Australia and New Zealand, the Bishop has responsibilities as the Chairperson of the governing Board of the Church, he represents the Lutheran Church in various forums, and he has oversight of the communities of the Church. These communities include congregations, schools, camping and youth ministries, early learning centres, aged care communities, disability services, social support centres, a tertiary education facility, first nations indigenous communities, archives and publishing, financial services, administration support, multicultural communities and overseas liaison. Outgoing Bishop, John Henderson, has reached retirement, having served eight years in the role.
I like to think of the work of the Bishop in the Church, in terms of the New Testament story of an unnamed woman in the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 14. Just before Jesus is crucified, she pours precious anointment on him. People ask Jesus about what he thinks about what she has done. He explains, “she has performed a good service for me.” A Bishop seeks to provide a good service the Lord of the Church as he serves people from all walks of life.
This decision of the Lutheran Church means that I will finish up my duties as Senior Pastor at St Peters. My call was for an initial six-month service. Our College Council understood that if I was not elected as Bishop then I would be eligible for the full-time role at St Peters. The Council is now proceeding with the call for that position.
My wife, Heidi, and I have received a tremendous welcome from the people of St Peters in our six months stay. Particularly, I am grateful for the leadership and fellowship of Head of College, Tim Kotzur. Also, Chaplains Kirstin, Silke and Matt has been a tremendous team to work with and I thank God that these three have been called to serve amongst the people of St Peters.
I will pray God’s ongoing blessing on the people of St Peters, Indooroopilly and Springfield as the staff continue to provide extraordinary educational journeys for the young people in our care.
Cheers, Pastor Paul

This year World Teachers’ Day will be recognised on Thursday 28 October and presents school communities with an opportunity to acknowledge teachers and say thank you. This special day, celebrated in more than 100 countries, has wider aims of recognising the importance of motivated teachers, professional development and devoting a day of due respect to teachers.

DEPUTIES COLLEGIATE
It is a privilege and pleasure for the Primary Years to host the Term 4 meeting of the Deputies Collegiate tomorrow, Friday 15 October. Twenty five Deputies from Independent Schools around the south east will gather for a day of collegiality, networking and professional growth. This network of leaders is an excellent source of new perspectives and ideas while offering support in this challenging time of education. Exchanging information on challenges, experiences and goals is a key benefit allowing the growth of new ideas, different perspectives and a growing confidence.
Thanks to Lia Sabri and Cameron Glass for their organisation and hosting of the Queensland branch of the Deputies’ Collegiate.

Year 10 Abyss activity as part of The Rite Journey Program
On Wednesday 13 October, the Year 10 cohort completed the Abyss activity as part of The Rite Journey Program. The aims of the day are self-reliance, decision-making, problem-solving, teamwork and communication. The students work in groups of three or four and follow clues around Brisbane and must work out how to get themselves from one venue to the next (five-six venues in total). By the end of the day, they should have travelled at least once by train, bus and City Cat/Kitty Cat. They are not to use family members or family friends to solve the problem(s) for them. Each team is given maps, the Translink app and google maps to address all the challenges they face on the day.
Some of the problems they have faced and conquered are (quotes from students):
“I realised I can get myself around Brisbane without relying on my parents.”
“So that’s where QUT is.”
“I dropped/lost my Go Card, but we solved the problem.”
“Our bus stopped at 52 stops before the destination; we took a different mode of transport to the next venue!”
Students to teacher at venue: “I’m starving” Teacher: “It’s 1.30 why haven’t you eaten?” Students: “Forgot as no one was there to tell us.”
“Got on the bus, realised we were going the wrong way, got off and found the correct bus. Pretty funny!”
“What do you mean we’re in the wrong place?... Oh, we didn’t read the card properly”
The big thing was that each student relished the independence of the day and all seemed to enjoy themselves (at least this is what they told the staff at the venues).

A Midsummer Night's Dream
“The course of true love never did run smooth…”
Shakespeare’s most enduring comedy, reimagined for a modern audience, tells the story of 4 runaway lovers who, in a forest outside Athens one midsummer night, find themselves in the middle of a dispute between the powerful fairy queen and her impetuous prince. If that wasn’t enough, a troupe of amateur actors led by a hapless director and bombastic leading man, have also become embroiled in the supernatural feud. Between these unlikely groups flies Puck, servant to the fairy queen, armed only with a wicked sense of humour and a love potion capable of making anyone fall for the first person they set eyes upon. What could possibly go wrong?
Girls Boarding had their annual House day/night where the Year 12 girls are honored for their accomplishments and contributions along with celebrating their time in boarding.
Old Scholar talks to the boarders
Over the years the Boarding Coordinators are able to catch up with Old Scholars when out promoting boarding in the regional areas. It was such a treat to meet up with Virginia Flynn (1971) in Mackay and hear her stories of days gone by. Virginia was in town for the Old Scholars reunion which made it possible for her to attend dinner with the boarder girls last Tuesday and afterwards talked to them about her days in boarding. My how things have changed! A big thank you to Virginia for speaking to the girls and sharing her life at St Peters.

Queensland All School Touch Tournament
Last week a selected U13 & U15 St Peters Touch teams ventured to the Gold Coast Performance Centre at Runaway Bay for the Queensland All School Touch Tournament. With over 170 teams competing over the five-day tournament, it was great to see the Maroon and White of St Peters competing for the first time. The U13 team, lead by Chris Mahony, continued on from the Brisbane All Schools Tournament and won three of their four games on Day 1. Day 2 proved to be more challenging as they came up against some schools with Touch Excellence Programs but certainly held their own. The girls left the best for last and finished with a 5-1 win over Cannon Hill to complete a great two days of Touch.
The U15 team, lead by Scott Nolan, and due to Ironbark and injury, had a more challenging preparation. With a depleted team the girls did a great job and the improvement over the two days was pleasing to see. The exposure to this level of Touch can only improve our girls as we look forward to the next QGSSSA Touch season.
Players of the tournament as voted by the girls was
U15 – Isadora M
U13 – Addie M
Congratulations girls.
Special thanks to our coordinator for this tournament Belinda Byrne whose organisation and communication was fantastic and to our coaches Chris & Scott, thank you for all you did to give the girls this opportunity.

Round 1 of Water Polo was also a huge success and a promising start to the 2021/2022 season. A big thank you to our Coordinator, Tracey Bruce, and our coaches who have done a great job in the pre-season with trials and all the behind the scenes work to get the girls in the pool for Round 1.
Good luck to all our girls playing Badminton and Water Polo for St Peters this weekend.

Congratulations to the girls from Years 10-12 who competed in their QGSSSA competition on Saturday, it was a fun day across all three venues. Good luck to the Years 7-9 girls who will be competing this Saturday. Go Saints!
Round 1 saw us with a beautiful warm day. Great for our girls as the pool is the best place to be even if it requires lots of wrestling to hold your position and fighting for the ball. Parents and Coaches, we had the hard job of firstly getting a car park and secondly waiting for an odd splash from a bouncing ball to cool us down. In true St Peters spirit, we powered through Round 1 with the following results:
18B (Open) Lost 7 – 5 to St Rita’s Polo Bears. A really close game and we walked away saying our team has big things to come. Our mushroom set up and being aware of passing the ball around to move the goalie will definitely be something that will be worked on this coming week. Ellie S-S came away with the team award for her numerous defensive steals.
17C Lost 5 - 6 to Brigidine College. This team went into the last quarter down three and showed great fighting spirit and came home really strongly. Eva H was totally awesome in goals stopping many attempts. Zara F was outstanding in the field and came away with the team award for the game.
16C Won 21 - 1 to Polo Bears. A big thank you to the four 15B players who played up today to help with team numbers, it was greatly appreciated. Our team showed great skills particularly the quick passing. Our strong defense put us on the counterattack which lead to the big score. This award could have gone to all team members however Alice H did shine the brightest.
15B Won 5 - 3 to Loreto. A close game saw the 15B have to dig really deep in defense to hold out Loreto especially in the last quarter. Beth S won the team award for her great play. It was pleasing to see the mushroom set up. Defensively everybody pressed well and continued to defend hard to help out the goalie.
15C Drew 10 - all to Loreto. This team jumped into the water and finished the game one player down and with no subs. The six girls played absolutely amazing and showed great St Peters spirit. TEAM OF THE WEEK!! Gwen D got the team award for her efforts.
14B Won 9 - 5 to AHS White. Willow P was the team award winner this week for showing strength at Goalie and in the field. This team was down at half time and powered home with great team defense to take the win. Nia D showed good speed on the counterattack and scored a few cracking goals. Amelia S went into goals at half time. This team has got a lot of exciting times ahead!
14C Won 14 - 2 to AHS Blue. Jess B lead from the front to take out the team award. The defensive pressure we applied paid off gaining many turnovers and providing us with plenty of scoring opportunities. A great start to the season.
13B Lost 6 - 9 to AHS Blue. A tough first game saw a narrow loss. Some great defense and Lara N at Goalie was a standout. Lara stopped many attempts and took out the team award this week. Coach Sophie will be working on their attack play and set up in the coming weeks. This team showed a lot of courage and we look forward to seeing their improvement throughout the season.
13C Won 12 - 9 to MSM. This was a tough game with referees warning both teams to stop grabbing in the first half. A couple of girls in this team are new to Water Polo and we also had four of our 12B’s backing up playing their second game of the day. Coach Nacole was extremely pleased with the girls and is looking forward to working on improving skills. Mackenzie B was awesome showing lots of speed and scoring many goals.
12B Won 15 - 7 to Loreto. Only a handful of these girls have played Water Polo before. They started with an amazing 4-0 lead in first quarter. Georgia P’s communication and game play earned her the team award this week. This team is coached by Nacole and Ellie together and we can definitely see improvements from the first week they jumped into the water for trials.
Swimming sessions are offered at the 50m pool for any girl playing Water Polo or wishing to do pre-season QGSSSA swim training. These sessions will be held on:
Monday afternoon 50m pool: 3:30pm – 4:15pm
Thursday afternoon 50m pool: 3:30pm – 4:15pm
There is no need for girls to sign on for these sessions, simply turn up to the pool for the sessions you can make.

P&F and SPOSA Trivia Night
Sean Connery’s first job was a coffin polisher – True or false? Name the animal which is born but cannot reproduce? Alas, two of the many thought-provoking questions from the inaugural P&F and SPOSA Trivia night last Saturday.
The night was a true celebration of the College community with 15 teams coming dressed as their chosen decade. 1340’s team, the St Plaguers brought up the chronological rear, with teams from 20s, 30s, 40, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90’s all being well represented. 'Pac Man Posse' won the prize for best dressed table (which may have been aided by their tables performance of classic 80s dance moves). 'Love, Peace & Mungbeans' came a close second.
It was great to see members of the St Peters Leadership Team at Trivia Night - Mr Kotzur, Mrs Delaney, Mr Delaney and Mrs Aishford - who were hosted by Llewellyn Jones (President of SPOSA) on the SPOSA table. After a challenging year it was great to them all relaxing and having some fun.
Competition was fierce with 1970s group 'Let’s Get Quizzical' taking out the prize of trivia champions with $1,000 going to their chosen charity – Elorac Place Community Centre.
Highlights of the night included the Dad Joke segment where there was opportunity to earn extra points.
Kat Feeney did a sensational job as MC – funny, entertaining, and full of energy. The perfect host for such an event.
Thank you to the St Peters teachers and staff who took the time to record trivia questions – especially Mr Chris Chapman who took it to the next level! Thank you also to Councillor James McKay for his support.
This is the first time the P&F and SPOSA have collaborated in putting together an event, and we look forward to working together in the future.
