Over the weekend the creative and artistic talents of our Senior students was on full display as part of VAPAr (Visual And Performing Arts review). VAPAr allows our Drama, Film & New Media, Fashion and Visual Art students to showcase their individual and collective talents. The quality of student work and performances was exceptional.
The Drama students’ performance of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was relatable, engaging, entertaining and humorous. Our Visual Art student’s paintings, drawings and photographs captured some of life’s eternal questions; whilst the short films of our New Media students were imaginative and thought-provoking. The individual flair of our Fashion students was most evident as they paraded their garments. I am constantly amazed with the creative ideas and skills of St Peters young people. Our students are fortunate to have access to amazing facilities and resources that open endless possibilities to them. More importantly they have equally amazing teachers who inspire, challenge, encourage, and cajole our students to help develop and unleash their artistic talents.
In a world where economic rationalism is such a pervasive influence on how we view the world and attach value to various activities, the importance of the Arts can easily be overlooked. The Arts enhances the lives of people. By adding beauty most art can enrich human life. Art can call attention to transcendence and explores the complexity of the human situation. It can challenge narrow perspectives and open new possibilities. The Arts also celebrate and explore mystery, breaking open the ordinary to reveal the presence of the sacred within all of life. In these ways the Arts contribute to the common good in an uncommon way.
Events like VAPAr remind us that the Arts are a critical piece in the jigsaw of the broad, liberal education that St Peters offers– an education that produces people who are open-minded and conscious of their opinions and biases; who are reflective of their actions, and that empowers our young people to deal with complexity, diversity, and change as they take their place in the world.

Wonderful Work
“I will meditate on your wonderful works.” Psalm 145:5
The back deck looked directly into the rainforest. Our touch of Daintree paradise gave us opportunity to be still and shed the bark of busyness wrapping our lives. During the day the forest lit up according to the changing light. At night it was dark and loud, and we took to sitting and listening.
One evening we noticed a light moving through the trees. A torch? Surely not people, there was no access. The torch moved, silently and more quickly than a human could. The light source took flight, rising to the lower canopy and falling to the forest floor. What was this strange phenomenon? Maybe a drone? But who could fly one through the forest at night? We had seen one earlier on the beach lingering and leering at the sunbathers. We were suddenly aghast that we had been using the outdoor shower, with its outlook into the forest in the direction of this light. Had we been spied on? Right, a confrontation was necessary – we couldn’t have drones flying in the forest where we were showering!
I pursued the light source, then noticed another. And another. Numerous points of light were floating in the trees. I shone my torch on one and moved as close as I was game. The 'drone' turned out to be a beetle. A bug. A firefly, actually! I had never seen a firefly before, but I reasoned if I were naming a creature 'firefly' it would be this one. This wonderful insect with an ability to glow as it sailed through the forest. I proudly announced my discovery to my wife and a quick internet check confirmed what we were seeing. Bioluminescence.
This revelation was simultaneously convicting and liberating. We had assumed something sinister. Yet this mystery heralded wonder! Fireflies were searching for mates and making a radiant offering for visitors to the forest, if only they were curious enough to enjoy it.
Too often we presume ill and we miss the magic. We expect the worst when there is wonder right at hand. Challenges present as torments rather than exhilarations. Detours are distractions rather than discoveries. Strangers are to be feared rather than welcomed as future friends.
“I will meditate on your wonderful works.” There is wonder in all God’s works. In creation, in knowledge, in art, in science, in humanity, in endeavour, in love, in kindness, in everything. Indeed, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. God grant us his Spirit so we let go of fear and foreboding and see the wonder of all God’s works!

Langer Library
It’s October and there are many exciting events involving the Langer Library.
We celebrated with the Year 12s on their last day of classes and wish them well in their forthcoming exams. October also means that the BrisNet TL Inter-School Readers’ Cup events commence. Last week, our two Year 8 teams were excited to compete in this year’s online competition. Harper K, Elizabeth W, Georgie W, Ava B, Gabriella D, Jessica H, Sarah-Grace R, Luica B and Aliana T went through the 50 questions from the five designated novels and came fourth and sixth out of 11 teams across eight schools. Next, we will host the Year 9 competition in the coming days.
Tuesday 19 October is International School Library Day and we will be celebrating during the week with lunchtime activities.
Please note a change to the opening hours next week with the library closing at 5.30pm on Thursday 28 October.
Term 4 Community Focus Day and Kids in Crisis Appeal
Our final Community Focus Day for 2021 will be on Wednesday 27 October.
There will be some fun activities and stalls at lunchtime in the Chapel Forecourt.
Mrs Benfield is raising awareness for Guide Dogs Queensland and will be selling merchandise including calendars, coffee mugs and picnic rugs to raise funds for the organisation. There will also be selling some yummy Cup Cakes.
Ms George and her fantastic helpers are raising awareness for Brian Cancer. Gould House will be wearing their house shirts and Year 7 will be participating in an obstacle course in P5. There will be a bake sale and soft drinks on sale at lunch and we encourage students to wear purple accessories.
Finally, the Social Justice group will be launching the Kids in Crisis Appeal. For the last 19 years we have been donating hundreds of gifts to bayside Child Safety community centre to help give a special Christmas present to disadvantaged children in the Cleveland area.
Collect a tag at student reception from Week 4 or at the stall on the Community Focus Day and buy a gift $15-$20. The child’s name and age will be on the tag but please do not wrap the gift. Place it in a gift bag and return to the reception area by November 19.
Primary Years
Primary Years news
This week our Year 5 students travelled to Noosa North Shore for three days to enjoy both independent and group challenges. Similarly, our Year 3 students will head to Alexandra Headlands in Week 5 to take part in their first school camp.
At St Peters, we believe in the benefits of such a program and see that outdoor education can foster many skills and develop students in a way regular classroom cannot. Outdoor education serves many purposes, particularly when delivered in a planned and sequential manner over many year levels. Outdoor education supports and reinforces our pastoral curriculum in the most practical of settings. Students working together in small, facilitated groups deal directly with concepts such as leadership (and equally importantly, followership), inclusivity, the value of working towards a common goal and the recognition of the unique attributes each individual can bring to the team.
Each student learns about their own strengths and weaknesses and how persistence in extending perceived limitations can bring success in the most challenging of situations – be they physical, emotional or social. This ability to bounce back from setbacks or challenges with confidence and optimism is a vital tool for any young person to grow and develop into resilient adolescents and adults.
Finally, on the most obvious level, outdoor education provides simple physical exercise, healthy living and an opportunity for staff and students to interact and build strong relationships away from the normal classroom environment.
My thanks go to the staff who work tirelessly throughout this time to ensure not only the safety of the students but also their enthusiasm and professionalism which is evident throughout the camping experiences.
Year 6 PYP Exhibition
This afternoon our Year 6 students also had the opportunity to share the culmination of their learning through their PYP Exhibition. As always, this event has brought with it a heightened sense of anticipation and nervous energy; not just for the students but for everyone involved in their learning journey through the Primary Years. Thanks, must go to the Year 6 teachers and mentors of the students and also to Mrs Simone Mitchell, for her tireless work and critical eye, which ensured that the experience for everyone was the best it could be.

AMEB Exam Success
A number of students sat their AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board) exams this week. These exams require a huge effort in preparing the repertoire and orchestral excerpts, memorising scales, transposition, aural and general knowledge. Congratulations to the following students for their excellent results. Thank you also to their tutors and accompanists.

Last week our 2021 Girls Sport Captains Claudia L & Ashleigh S invited the 2021 Girls Sport Captains and Vice Captains to Afternoon Tea as a thank you for all they have done for their Sports this year.
We welcomed Mrs Delaney who together with Mr Kotzur has been so supportive of all the exciting initiatives Claudia and Ashleigh have introduced this year. Mrs Delaney thanked the girls and inspired them to continue to make a difference, it was wonderful to watch them listening to her every word.
I look forward to supporting our future Girls Sport Leaders to continue to build on these traditions.
QGSSSA AFL
Last Friday was an exciting day! For a girl who grew up in country South Australia and had a desire to play AFL for many years, to see our St Peters girls head off for the first for the AFL Skills Development sessions, it really was a special day!
These sessions are run by AFL QLD and they concentrate on the fundamentals of the game, all the coaches were pleasantly surprised at the skill level of the girls. St Peters has been fortunate enough to welcome onboard to assist with coaching Old Scholar and Brisbane Lions player Greta Bodey (2012). Greta also brought along Lions teammate Gabby Collingwood. We are excited to put together our St Peters team of coaches as we prepare for the commencement of games next year.
Well done to all the girls, there was positive feedback after the session from all involved and we look forward to session number two this Friday 😊

It is shaping up to be another incredible season of Water Polo, the girls have well and truly embraced the season with some outstanding games so far. Whether they win or lose our girls are always commended on their sporting resilience, positive demeanour and the way in which they are gracious when they congratulate the opposition team at the end of the match.
A special mention to our wonderful Water Polo parents who are upskilling with a Blue Card and table duty course, so they can support the teams with scoring.
We must make special mention to our parents who have taken on a Manager’s role, this role is very important to assist our Coordinator Tracey, thank you.
The Girls Water Polo season is a long season and girls are committing to two nights per week for training as well as their game on Saturdays. As it is such a gruelling sport, it is important that all girls on the team attend their games, so a full bench of subs is available. Our girls have shown great resilience to date with some teams down players due to other Sport commitments, the enthusiasm of the younger girls to step up and play a second game is admirable. Well done to all teams!
Round 2 Water Polo Wrap
The week leading into it Round 2 saw us dealing with the excitement of the Year 12’s last day, dodging storms and adjusting to last minute game changes. Training seems to be going well although attendance has been down for some teams and we would really appreciate it if where possible you could get to training. Water Polo is a game of structure and strategy. It is extremely hard for coaches to get our teams playing with structure when they have so many girls missing at training.
A very windy Game Day saw the following results:
18B (Open) Won 9 - 6 v AHS White. Great improvement from last week especially with the mushroom set up. Coach Amelia was happy with the defensive set up. It was pleasing to see the team driving and taking shots.
17C Won 11 - 2 v AHS White. At 5.45pm on a Saturday Night we didn’t know what to expect but the 17C team certainly turned up to play. Our defense was relentless giving us a number of fast breaks and scoring opportunities. Chloe M, the award winner was a standout showing great skills and shooting some awesome goals. Coach Lorena was happy with this great team performance! Special thanks to this team for putting in the lane ropes post-game and showing just how great St Peters is!
16C Won 15 - 1 v Brigidine. Great counter attacks saw us well in front all game. Grace E-W came away with the Player of Game award for her 5 goals and her fantastic all-round performance. Alice H was also active in front of the goals putting 6 goals into the back of the net. The shared goalie role by both Rose J and Brienna G and the fact they both go into the field is a great thing for this team. After Round 2 this team has scored a total of 36 goals and let in 2 goals!! (Water Polo Qld may well look at promoting this team to the B division!)
15B Lost 18 – 8 v Mermaids White. A change of venue saw us playing out of Marist College Pool. A timing mishap in the first quarter saw our 7-minute quarter blow out to approx. 14 minutes! Unfortunately for us a slow start saw us 15-4 down at half time. After half time we looked better and we won the second half 4-3. Full time score 18-8. Prize went to Elspeth for her 2nd half goal saves.
15C BYE
14B Lost 2 - 8 v AHS Blue. Defensively we got a lot of ball. In attack we need to hook out to give the goalie someone to throw to and we need strong drives. We can see improvements from last year already and we have no doubt after another couple of training sessions this team will lift again. Congrats to Romi V-B for picking up the team award, her defense was awesome.
14C LOST 7 - 6 v Loreto White. Both teams were evenly matched going goal for goal throughout the whole game. Mr Kotzur was very impressed by the way the girls kept fighting for the ball in defense, this was an enjoyable game to watch. Our teamwork and quick passing are on the improve. Congrats to Eva G for being awarded with the Turn & Burn prize for her great defensive steals.
13B Won 10 - 5 v Loreto White. Coach Sophie described the game as exceptional. We went into the 3rd quarter winning 5 - 3 and came away with a 10 - 5 win. Laura Mc played like a champion and came away with the team award. We saw great hooking and fouling and Lara N was great in goals.
13C BYE
12B LOST 5 - 12 v Mermaid White. We got off to a great start and then the wheels came off, it was one of those days where things didn’t go our way. We got good defensive steals but put ourselves under pressure by passing the ball back to the opposition. This team has a huge amount of talent and we are sure they will learn from this game. Emma W showed a lot of determination and was awarded the award for the player this week
