Welcome to Term 4

Welcome to Term 4. A special welcome is extended to those families joining our community for the first time this term.

The Queensland Government during the term break released an updated plan for the easing of COVID–19 restrictions during the period of October to December. This easing of restrictions will enable the College to open up some additional elements of College life and return to some further aspects of normalcy. The College is grateful for the way that our community has worked together during the pandemic, and asks for your ongoing cooperation, understanding and support in the circumstances.

For our Year 12s, the Class of 2020, the end of their St Peters journey is in sight. They have just a few weeks of classes before they undertake their final exams. 2020 marks the first time since the 70s that external exams were held in Queensland. Our Year 12s have been well-prepared for this experience, and I encourage them to remain focused and to build on the solid foundations they have established and maintain a steady, consistent, diligent approach to their studies in the coming days and weeks.

Over the term break much of enabling preparation works for the College’s new Learning and Innovation Centre to be located in the Campus Heart were completed. The detailed designs for the building are in the process of being finalised, with the finishing touches being put on how the various spaces within the facility will be used. The construction of the project will begin late in Term 4 after exams are completed and will signify a busy but exciting 12 month period in the development of the College.

As we begin the final term of the 2020 school year I encourage our students to set their goals high, exhibit a Plus Ultra attitude in all that they do and make the most of the opportunities that St Peters affords them.

Welcome to Term 4

When St Peters Lutheran College commenced operations in 1945, the first student enrolled by principal Mr Schneider was a gentleman by the name of Neville Stallman. In fact, he was here before the school started, helping prepare buildings – together with many others who sacrificially gave of their time, talents and finances to enable the College to begin. Over the years many students and staff have come through our gates and served and learned here, and helped in the development of the campus.

Mr Stallman passed away last Monday, having used the gifts he received from St Peters to serve in various ways, including through ongoing support of our College. His legacy is ongoing and we will give thanks for his life and place him and his family in God’s loving care at the funeral service later this week.

This is a timely reminder that what we have here today is built on the vision, commitment, effort and faith of those who have gone before us and when we leave others will continue to build on our present contributions. It is a reminder that we stand as part of a community that extends through time and that each of us has something to contribute in the continuing development of this community.

Ultimately, St Peters exists because of the love of Christ, whose life, death and resurrection inspired countless people across the ages to live transformed lives, to serve those around them, to make the love of God for all visible in this world. This is what inspired our forebears and this is what we seek to communicate to the present generation and pass on into the future. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews puts it this way:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

May you persevere through this last term of this challenging year, fixing your eyes on Christ, who is with us in all the joys and sorrows of life and beyond.

For your chance to see your artwork appear in the 75th Anniversary Review, enter the 2020 Art Competition.

Students should create an artwork corresponding to any of these themes: The College (general), Primary Years, Junior High, Senior School, Boarding, Sport, Music, other cocurricular activity, a College event, a College subject.

Artwork should be presented on an A4 or A3 sized piece of paper/canvas. Artwork should be unique and created by hand (using pencils, crayons, markers, collage, paint etc). Excessive use of text (words, sentences) in drawings is discouraged.

Attached to the back of the artwork and in clear print should be the student’s name, age, year level, and a school email address. Please note that entries with illegible or missing information will not be considered.

To enter the competition, please submit your hard copy art work to Communications Department, Review Art Competition at your sub-school reception. Alternatively, hand deliver to Ross Roy.

The closing date is Friday 16 October (COB). Entries postmarked after this date will not be entered in the competition.

Entries will be judged by the Communications Department, the Art Department and Tim Kotzur, Head of College. Eight winners in total will be chosen.

Each winner will receive a $30 Amazon gift voucher PLUS their artwork will be published in the 75th anniversary Review.

Winners will be contacted, via the email address supplied, before the end of Term 4, 2020.

All artwork will happily be returned to the artist before the end of Term 4, 2020.

St Peters Robotics would like to thank the College’s P&F for supporting us with a grant, which was used to purchase ten Micromelon robots. 

Micromelon is a local Brisbane startup, who have designed a robot that is specifically for schools. It is an all-in-one robot (sensors are encased in the body of the bot) making it ready to use, portable, strong and hygienic! The most exciting part is that the programming is able to be done in both block coding and Python, which allows the students to start learning text-based coding as they go. Thanks to Tim for coming in and running us through how to use the robots... we’re looking forward to having some fun with them!

Welcome back to Term 4

I trust that you and your family have had a relaxing and rejuvenating break wherever that may have been, and that you are ready for a new school term. The children have spent today discussing the highlights of their Spring holidays, and also looking at what learning experiences in which they will be involved throughout the course of this term’s studies.

The Primary Years’ parent calendar outlines the major events happening for our families so please use this as a guide throughout the term. While many activities are still not possible, the term is still a busy one.  Obviously updates and other date claimers will also come through as the term progresses, but hopefully the major events have now been noted on this document. We ask that you keep this as a reference guide handy for you and your family. I look forward to seeing you at the many upcoming events that take place throughout Term 4. This was emailed home last Tuesday but is also posted on Firefly for your convenience.

A very BIG WELCOME to our three new families who have commenced in the Primary Years.  Thomas in Year 1, Hudson in Year 5 & Leila in Year 6.  We hope you have enjoyed your first day on your learning journey in St Peters Primary Years.

Year 6 Exhibition | Thursday 22 October

What is the Year 6 Exhibition?

The International Baccalaureate describes the Exhibition as follows:

In their final year of the PYP, students, carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative project known as the PYP exhibition.

This involves students working collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into real life issues or problems.  Students collectively synthesise all of the essential elements of the PYP in ways that can be shared with the whole school community.

It also provides teachers with a powerful and authentic process for assessing student understanding.

The exhibition represents a unique and significant opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB Learner Profile developed throughout their engagement with the PYP.

It also provides schools and students with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the transition of learners to the next phase of their education.

Our Year 6 students have been working diligently for the last six weeks or so and are very close to sharing their learning with the community. They should be very proud of this time, having risen to the challenge admirably. Further information detailing the event will be coming out to our Year 6 parents shortly.

St Peters is a SunSmart School

As summer approaches quickly, it is important that we make sure that we protect children from the harshness of the Queensland sun. We are a SUNSMART School, so it is vital that we ask students to have their hats with them every day and these are worn when children are outdoors. We also ask that students have sunscreen applied prior to beginning the school day and this is packed into their school bags and swimming bags for re-application as necessary. This is the case all year round, but certainly an imperative for the heat of Term 4.

YEAR 9 IRONBARK

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS (Years 9-11)

As you are aware, next Tuesday 13 October we will hold our Parent-Teacher Interview Evening in the Dohler classrooms. These interviews are a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet with their student’s teachers and discuss progress, areas requiring attention and strategies for ongoing improvement. These evenings are an important and effective way of parents meeting numerous teachers in a short time. We acknowledge that not all families will be able to be catered for in the one evening and remind parents that they are also able to contact teachers at any time throughout the year via email or telephone should they have any questions or concerns. Discussions outside the times available on the night will most likely occur via telephone or Zoom. Please direct any queries to Academic Operations (A.Operations@stpeters.qld.edu.au) 

Outstanding Service Awards

This week at the Junior High Year Level Assemblies students were invited to apply for consideration for the Outstanding Service Awards for 2020. They were also sent an email explaining the award and with an application form attached.  These awards recognise students who have actively demonstrated our Christian values of respect, care and concern for others through their outstanding individual contributions and service to Junior High and/or the broader College community.  

All students in Years 7-9 are eligible to be considered for these awards and they can self-nominate or a staff member can nominate them. Nominations might be based on the fact that the student has:

• A record of significant and sustained service during the year - such as volunteering for special events (e.g. Open Days, JH Welcome Day, Social Justice Week, Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day breakfasts, Kaleidoscope ushering etc.) either within Junior High or the College as a whole.
• A student who has initiated and led a particular service project or fund-raising initiative within the College.

The students who are nominated are usually recognised as being an inspiration and role model to others through his or her service to Junior High or the general College community.

All nominations will be considered on their individual merits by the Junior High Academic Care and Wellbeing Leadership group, consisting of Head of Junior High, Deputy Head of Junior High and the Year-level Coordinators. 

Each year we select between three and eight recipients at each year level in Junior High. It is a very prestigious award with very high standards and expectations - and only a handful of the students who are nominated are successful in being selected.  The successful Award recipients at each year level will be announced at the Junior High Awards Ceremony next month.

We realise there have not been as many opportunities this year but encourage students to apply if they think they think they have shown service and commitment to Junior High or the College this year.  Applications are due back by 3:45pm - Monday 9 November.

PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS

A number of Junior High classes will have pre-service teachers attached to them this term. Gaining work experience ‘in the field’ is a mandatory part of teacher training and involves a number of stages or blocks of time. Pre-Service teachers work through stages from spending time purely observing classes up to ‘internships’ where they are given provisional teacher registration and are able to teach, assess and report on units of work.  Throughout all of these stages pre-service teachers are supervised, monitored and work closely with experienced teachers. Should you have any queries or concerns please contact your child’s teacher.

UNIFORM REMINDER

School Locker has sock garters available for purchase and students are asked to have a pair to keep their long socks up when wearing shorts. Alternatively, they could make their own from elastic.  This is the easiest way to ensure their socks remain up and tidy throughout the day.

Future Problem-Solving Success

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jessica L, Charlie H, Melinda H, Matilda B, Ava M and Sophie M on their selection into the National Finals - Global Issues Problem Solving competition

This year the students will not be flying down to Melbourne to participate, instead organisers are planning for finalists to work from their respective schools on Saturday October 17 and will spend 2 hours going through the Future Problem-Solving problem booklet (topic - Living Poverty), then will another 3 ½ hours to organise a dramatic and creative action plan presentation to be videoed, make props, film and upload.

These students truly are inspirational and will be the kind of thinkers and leaders our society will need in the future. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Anni Gold for her assistance, guidance and encouragement of these wonderful ambassadors of our College.

This is a photo of the transformed bacteria completed by Grade 11 IB students.

This method, called genetic transformation, uses an engineered molecule of DNA to transfer a gene or genes from one organism to another so that the organism is capable of producing the protein encoded by the transformed gene.
This practical involves transforming bacteria (E. coli) with a gene from Aequorea victoria; a bio-luminescent jellyfish. If successful, the green fluorescent protein (GFP) of the Aequorea victoria will be expressed in the bacteria; causing them to glow bright green under UV light.

Congratulations to Film, Television, and New Media student’s and Annika K and Liv B who were chosen to be part of IFFY’s official selection. Supported by Screen Queensland, this year’s festival will explore the theme of Perception vs Reality. Annika’s film Mickey and the AI and Liv’s film Loading will be screened at the awards ceremony held on the 17 October, where the winners of each category will be announced. We wish Annika and Liv all the best for their entries.

One of the exciting Music Department events in Term 4 is the St Peters Solo Festival. All instrumental and voice students who are part of the Music Department Ensemble program are invited to perform, listen to their peers and receive feedback from renowned performing musicians and educators, participating in either a competitive or non-competitive section.

In addition to the many benefits of playing a musical instrument, students can build their skills and self-confidence through public performance. It is also great practice for students who are sitting upcoming exams. Students also have the option to use their Solo Festival performance as an audition for 2021 Music Ensembles (please note that auditions for Chorale, Soloists and Symphonic Winds will be held separately).

All students will receive a certificate of participation and a specialist adjudicator’s comment sheet. Additionally, students may choose to enter the competitive section, where the winner will be awarded the perpetual trophy for the section, which will be displayed during the year in the department display cabinets in the PAC foyer. The winning student will also receive a trophy as a memento.

Years 4 – 6 Girls Basketball Training

Years 4 - 6 Girls Basketball Training will be run in Term 4. While there will be no games, the sessions will provide girls with a great foundation to play Basketball in future years in the QGSSSA Seasons. Sessions will be held at the St Peters Outside Gym Courts, 3:30pm – 5:00pm. Training will start on Wednesday 14 October and continue through to Wednesday 25 November. Sign on information will be sent to all Years 4 – 6 girls in Week 1 of Term 4.

Years 4 – 6 Girls Touch Football Training

Years 4 - 6 Girls Touch Football Training will be run in Term 4. While there will be no games, the sessions will provide girls with a great foundation to play Touch Football in future years. Sessions will be held at Harts Road Oval, 3:30pm – 5:00pm. Training will start on Wednesday 14 October and continue through to Wednesday 25 November. Sign on information will be sent to all Years 4 – 6 girls in Week 1 of Term 4.

Primary Years Next Gen Rugby Sessions

An email has been sent to all parents regarding the Term 4 Primary Years Rugby Sessions. It would be great to have big numbers at the sessions learning the skills required to play Rugby. Although the sessions are part of the paid sports program, The Rugby Support Group, with assistance from the P&F, will fully fund the program so there will be no cost passed on to parents.

Years 5 – 7 High Performance Netball Sessions

An email has been sent to all parents regarding the Term 4 High Performance Netball Sessions. It would be great to have big numbers at the sessions and continue to build on the strong Netball community that is growing at St Peters. The High Performance Netball sessions in Term 4 will be part of the paid sports program and there will be a cost for the sessions.

Pre-season Years 4 - 6 AIC Cricket Training

All Years 4-6 boys interested in improving their cricket skills are welcome to attend Preseason Cricket training at the Cricket Nets throughout Term 4. Training will be held on Wednesday afternoons, 3:30pm – 5:00pm starting on Wednesday 14 October. A sign on sheet will be sent to all Years 4 – 6 boys so coaching numbers can be finalised.

Welcome back everyone to Term 4 for 2020. We do hope that all students and their family enjoyed a well-deserved break and are refreshed and ready to take on Term 4 2020. In terms of sport, last term (Term 3) was an extremely hectic and challenging one for all involved and we now look forward to the next nine weeks were some further summer sports will take place. It is also a good opportunity for some 2021 Term 1 sports to begin their preparations.

Week 1

• Final preparations take place in readiness for the 2020 AIC Track & Field Championships at QSAC, Nathan (Friday 9 October & Saturday 10 October).

2020 AIC Football Reviewed

The 2020 AIC Football season was one of the most successful that St Peters has ever experienced.

Our 1st XI, 2nd XI, 10A and 10B teams finished pool matches undefeated and were looking forward to the final, however, the end of season was interrupted by COVID. The success of our senior teams put the program in a positive space for the upcoming year and we look forward to seeing these players continue to develop.

Above all, the 2020 season was defined by St Peters Football teams enjoying playing. From Years 4 to 12, all boys showed a great desire to enjoy their football and being on the field with their mates. 2021 is going to be an exciting year for St Peters Football.

2020 AIC Rugby Reviewed

The 2020 AIC Rugby season certainly presented more challenges than usual given the cancellation of all AIC sport during Term 2.

We are very thankful and appreciative of all the hard work done behind the scenes to allow our boys to compete in a shortened season during Term 3.

With limited time to prepare our players and coaches did a great job in their commitment at training sessions and being very competitive on Saturdays in a tough pool.

A special mention must go to our Year 12 boys for their unwaivered support of St Peters Rugby throughout this particularly difficult year and in some cases over the past 8 years.

As the Rugby coordinator I would like to thank all players and parents for their efforts this season and I look forward to the 2021 season.

2020 AIC Chess Reviewed

It was a season of mixed news for St Peters Chess – from the possibility of no season we saw a proposed shortened event proceed until COVID-19 snatched away our finale.

Good numbers (especially in Intermediate – Years 7-9) meant we were looking at strong teams across the divisions, hoping to build upon last year’s Aggregate Chess School success. Along with the usual interruptions, the change of Term from 2 to 3 combined with COVID-19 uncertainty, teams were changed on a regular basis.

The Opens will look back at what could have been – winning all three games on our side of the draw and with particularly strong and just as importantly dedicated Chess players they were strong favourites to take out the premiership. The Senior teams were shuffled to exam commitments and yet we were able to find some seniors who found the joy of competitive Chess in their final year and acquitted themselves well. Many thanks to those Seniors who have represented the school for several years – Jared, Ari, Matthew.

Intermediates were dealt a cruel hand as boys had selected Term 3 as the Ironbark preference last year to be available for Term 2 Chess – meaning our Intermediate grouping could never really show its true potential. What was pleasing however was the depth that showed across the group as our Intermediate B team qualified for the 1v1 playoff that never materialised. Junior Chess has boys who are not only good at Chess but also like to play the game. I encourage both boys, parents and grandparents to continue to encourage and play games amongst themselves – it is a great way to connect with them.

It would be remiss of me not to take this opportunity to thank our Head Coach of the last nine years – Nik Stawski who is stepping down this year – Nik has been a passionate advocate of St Peters Chess – both in the skills required to play the game on whatever level but also to play the game in the right manner. We have introduced a St Peters Chess Championship and seen the rise to Aggregate AIC Chess Champions in 2019 (and I was confident for a 2020 repeat) and it has largely been to Nik and his team – Henry Slater Jones, Keon Poon and Riley Bygraves (on match afternoons) that this success has been achieved. Nik - the SPLC Chess community will miss your enthusiasm, wisdom and talent and we wish you the best.

This week our St Peters AIC Track & Field squad will complete their final preparations before they compete at the 2020 AIC Track & Field Championships on Friday evening 9 October and Saturday 10 October, QSAC, Nathan. For the most, they have worked hard in their training and preparations, this also included holiday training for many of the boys.

We wish all the St Peter’s athletes who are competing every success both in their final preparations and on competition day. Compete with pride and live up to the ever-present St Peters spirit of Plus Ultra.

Girls Sport in the holidays!

I had the pleasure of being involved in 2 tournaments over the holiday period.

Basketball

Firstly, the four-day Queensland All School Basketball tournament played at Cornubia Stadium in Logan.

Special thanks to Ms Alex Wilson, Mr Orhan Memedovski and Miss Grace Champion for their efforts with both coordinating and coaching the girls over the four days. Playing in Division 2 in a very tough pool, the girls found themselves playing our QG opponent Somerville House for ninth place and what a performance they put on – we came away with a great win and memories for our girls, particularly our Year 12 girls, Zoe P, Catherine V and Anneliese D. Thanks also to Alice J, Gabby N, Leila J, Sophie D, Charlotte B and their parents for making the trek down the highway over the four days to represent St Peters. We are looking forward to seeing Basketball back in 2021. 

Netball

My long weekend was spent at Nissan Arena at the Vicki Wilson Netball State Championships where St Peters fielded both a Senior Team and a combined Years 7-9 Junior Team and what a weekend it was.

With the preliminary rounds cancelled earlier in the year due to COVID-19, 70 teams from across the state came together for this three-day tournament. With restrictions on numbers in the stadium we set up camp in the car park and what fun we enjoyed together along with some amazing Netball that was played. Our Senior team finished in third place, going down to Moreton Bay College by three to go into the grand final. Our girls, Martina R, Larika M, Ashleigh S, Olivia R, Aldora T, Anna K, Kiara C, Chloe D, Charli M and with amazing support from injured Mia B gave their all over the weekend and played some very high standard Netball, amazing to watch.

Our Junior team, Issy P, Olivia C, Georgia M, Jess H, Jazelle D, Alice H, Ella M, Leilani F, Toby S, Taylah H, Amelia R and Charlotta E finished in sixteenth place losing in the round of 16 to Canterbury College who went on to win the Junior Competition.

Special thanks to our coaches Tracey, Patti and Kylie. Their teaching of the game of Netball over the weekend was inspiring to watch, the girls embraced the experience and the improvement in all players was great to see.

To the parents for your support, thank you and special thanks to Jane R and Katie M for scoring over the three days, it was a big weekend!

Equestrian

Also, over the holidays, Sienna O competed at the Interschool Equestrian State Titles, Siena did not place but proudly represented our College with pride.

Hockey

Congratulations to Jane Ramsay who has been named in the 17-19 Years Girls Hockey Merit Team, a great effort to be selected after playing for Met West at the Queensland School Sport State Championships.

Badminton and Water Polo

Good luck to all our girls playing Badminton and Water Polo for St Peters this weekend, special mention to our Year 12 Girls playing their final games of Badminton.

Cross Country

We are also taking our Cross-Country girls to Rangakarra for a ‘Friendly' Cross Country Competition this Friday afternoon – we are so happy to give the girls this opportunity in 2020, good luck girls.

QG NETBALL

The 2020 QGSSSA Netball season was a huge success. With limited time to prepare our teams, our coaches lead by Tracey and Patti did a great job with over 240 girls from Years 7-12 signing up for the season. Congratulations to our 7B, 8A and Senior C girls for an undefeated season and we also had 7 teams who over the season only lost one game, this included our Open team. This is a huge improvement from previous seasons, and we thank our coaches for their hard work and dedication to our Netball program.

Saint Challenge Cup was also developed in 2020, these girls who were unsuccessful in selection for a QG team continued to work on their Netball skills with a Tuesday morning training season along with games on Friday afternoons, the improvement in these girls was so rewarding to see.

A special mention must go to our Year 12 girls for their great support of St Peters Netball program throughout this season and in most cases over many years.

As a very proud St Peters Netball Coordinator I would like to thank all Players, Parents and Coaches for their efforts this season and I look forward to the 2021.

The 2020 Hockey season was one of the more enjoyable seasons in recent times. We said goodbye to a marvellous group of committed Year 12 girls who have been long standing servants to St Peters Hockey for 6 years. On the opposite end of the spectrum we have a great young group of Hockey players in Years 7 and 8 who will ensure we remain a competitive program for years to come. Congratulations to all the girls involved in the program this year. It is always a pleasure to coach and mentor girls with such positive attitudes.

Congratulations to two of our Open girls, Lauren H and Jane R, for recently representing Met West at the State Titles. Extra kudos to Jane, who was named in the Qld team at the completion of the titles. Bring on 2021!!!

QG TENNIS

What a great season of QG Tennis was had by all. Special shout out to super star Zara L who won her games in the last round of the season in 15 minutes helping secure the title of undefeated for the Opens team. Well done to Sophie J, Zara L, Tahlia K and Hayley J for an outstanding undefeated season.

Congratulations to all player this season. It was amazing to see you all grow as players and become an awesome team that supported and celebrated one another.

A huge thank you to Mark Lewis, Coach Amy, Coach Caitlin, Coach Chris, Coach Fiona and Coach Nat for guiding our player through the season. Your efforts in developing our players each year are noticed in the continuing improvement of the quality of our players.

Congratulations to our QGSSSA Track & Field girls on their incredible second place result at yesterday’s Championships. The day had some extremely hot moments, but the effort everyone put in regardless was absolutely amazing!Well done to Hilal D (Year 11), who set a new record for the 16 Years 100m; Torrie L (Year 10), who set a new record for the 15 Years 200m and 100m (last broken in 2007); our 13 Years, 14 Years and 16 Years girls who had age group wins for the first time; Ashleigh S (Year 11) who won the Open Division A Javelin, the Open Division B Discus, and the Open Division B Shotput with a record throw; and Laylani V (Year 11) who won the Open Division A Discus and the Open Division A Shotput with a record throw.St Peters finished in the top three of every age group and, over the last five years, have improved by one place overall each time—a true testament to the girls' dedication and drive to reach Plus Ultra. We can’t wait to see what next year will bring and hope everyone is having a well-deserved rest. Go Saints!

BWPI WATER POLO

What an amazing response to join a team and play Water Polo for St Peters this season.  We have had over 100 girls trial, we appreciate their enthusiasm to join one of the fastest growing sport in Australia.
