On Wednesday the College Prefects for the coming 12 months were installed into their office at a special ceremony in front of their family and peers. Thirty-six young people were commissioned to serve as Prefects.
In my remarks to our young people being installed into this leadership role I reminded them that the next twelve months promises to be an exciting time. It will be an opportunity for them to do much good, to make a difference and leave a lasting legacy on their College. They were reminded of the words of Martin Luther King, Jr, the Civil Rights Leader of the 1960s who said that Life’s most urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?‘ They were encouraged to remember those six words and to remember that it is often in the small things, those things that Mr Rushmore, the Head of Senior School often refers to as ‘everyday leadership’, that they will effect change. Every smile, every act of kindness, every time they help the person standing in front of them, every gentle word of encouragement, every time they listen and give voice to another - these everyday actions all have meaning and power. Every time they use their gifts and talents to meet a need in our community they are exercising powerful Servant Leadership. Through seemingly small acts of service they challenge the status quo for both themselves and the person in front of them, creating action and change through ripple effects that they may not even realise and in doing so they will leave a legacy that will impact for today and in the years to come.
We wish the 2025 Prefects well as they build on the legacy of those that have gone before them using their gifts and talents to make a difference at St Peters.

MMG Questionnaire
As part of our continuous improvement process, I wish to provide opportunities for parents (Prep to Year 12), and students (Years 5 to 12) to provide us with feedback relating to their views of St Peters Lutheran College across a wide range of areas.
As per previous years, this research is being conducted by MMG Education, a specialist education consultancy that works with schools in the areas of school strategic reviews and stakeholder satisfaction. MMG’s client schools include many of the leading schools across Australia. Parents will be invited to complete a questionnaire over a two week period commencing on Friday 27 September 2024. Students will complete their questionnaires in Week 1 or Week 2 of Term 4.
On Friday 27 September, MMG Education will email you an invitation to participate in the review and provide you with your confidential, secure access to your questionnaire.
To ensure confidentiality and to encourage frank and full expression of views:
All responses will be de-identified;
The data will be reported back to the College in aggregated form only; and
All data collected by MMG Education will remain under its control and archived according to research protocols. The College will not be able to access it.
At the conclusion of the research period, MMG Education will provide the College with a report. This report will then help to guide the ongoing development and improvement of St Peters.
‘I like your thinking, but what are you going to do about it?’ Our Year 6 students have heard this ad nauseam over the past few months as they prepare for the Primary Years Programme Exhibition (PYPx). As a culmination of their Primary journey, the Year 6s are empowered to identify a personal passion, drive their own inquiry on this issue, and develop an action plan for positive impact. At that moment, the group nearest me were exploring sustainability in the clothing industry, advocating an end to fast fashion in Australia. Deep in thought as I tried to help find for them a meaningful action they could take, my eyes wandered the room rather aimlessly, alighting a moment upon my shoes, and a little hole in the corner I hadn’t noticed before…
I sat a moment wondering what I might do with my shoes. My usual response is dispose and buy anew, but that felt a little hypocritical in the moment. And so, I grew convicted. How could I face my students, honestly encouraging them to take action if I myself would not? For two weeks the thought gnawed at me, and in the meantime, there were the holidays. I mulled over the shoes, made the economic case, arguing back and forth about the initial quality of the shoes, questioning whether the repair would stick, and so on.
While on a youth camp that second holiday week, we spent some time with Isaiah 40:31 which reads:
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
I put two and two together on camp. Do my shoes hope in the Lord? No, of course not. But I was reminded that He is a God of renewal and restoration. God is rich in grace and abundant in mercy, restoring the honour, dignity and life of those who have suffered, been scratched, bruised and broken. As people of God, we are not thrown away when our utility is outweighed by our cost; our virtues by our vices; or our strengths by our flaws. When God chose us, God faithfully sticks with us and commits to restoring us again and again and again. My shoes had become symbolic of God’s restoration of the world, and the lives of all who hope in God.
Our PYPx is shaping up to be an incredible experience for our students! I’d encourage anyone and everyone to come along and be inspired. Your world may be just about to change.

World's Greatest Shave – Class of 2024
As part of a treasured Year 12 tradition at St Peters, each graduating class selects a cause to support during their final year. This year, the Class of 2024 is raising awareness and funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.
On Friday 11 October, their last day of school, our Year 12 cohort will be participating in the World’s Greatest Shave to support the fight against blood cancer. Students will be colouring their hair in purple and pink, or trimming, cutting, or shaving their hair to help make a difference. Each student is aiming to raise a minimum of $50.00 to take part.
As we mark Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage you to support our Year 12s and this important cause. Blood cancer affects 1 in 12 Australians, and your donation, no matter the size, can have a big impact.

The Solo Festival is the St Peters version of an eisteddfod. Students are invited to perform, listen to their peers and receive feedback from renowned performing musicians and educators, participating in either a competitive or non-competitive section.
In addition to the many benefits of playing a musical instrument, students can build their skills and self- confidence through public performance. It is also great practice for students who are sitting upcoming exams. Students also have the option to use their Solo Festival performance as an audition for 2024 Music Ensembles (please note that auditions for Chorale, Soloists and Symphonic Winds will be held separately).
All students will receive a certificate of participation and a specialist adjudicator’s comment sheet. Additionally, students may choose to enter the competitive section, where the winner will be awarded the perpetual trophy for the section, which will be displayed during the year in the department display cabinets in the PAC foyer. The winning student will also receive a trophy as a memento.
Sections will be run in lieu of afternoon instrumental ensemble rehearsals in Term 4 Weeks 5 and 6. Each section will commence at 3:30pm. The Solo Festival Timetable is here – please note that sections may not be on the same afternoon as your usual rehearsal. Students are expected to stay for the entirety of their section and to be a supportive audience member.
With the exception of percussionists, each student is asked to perform one piece only. Percussionists will be expected to perform once piece each on a tuned (mallets or timpani) and untuned (snare drum or drum kit) instrument.
The time limit for sub-school sections are:
Senior School maximum of 8 minutes
Junior High and Upper Primary maximum of 6 minutes
A rehearsal time is offered for students (not including pianists) and further notification regarding rehearsal times will be sent via email closer to the Festival.

Queensland Mental Health Week
This week is Queensland Mental Health Week which is an annual awareness week that aims to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health and wellbeing. The initiative is linked to World Mental Health Day, which is held on 10 October every year.
Queensland Mental Health Week encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience of mental illness or not, and encourages help seeking behaviours, when needed. The week also gives us the opportunity to understand the importance of mental health in our everyday lives. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
The theme for Queensland Mental Health Week 2024 is 'Connect for mental health', emphasising the proactive measures we can adopt to nurture and support positive mental health and wellbeing for ourselves and our communities.
Connect for mental health focuses on four areas:
Connect with self: Take care of yourself, do something you enjoy, make healthy choices, and seek help when needed.
Connect with community: Create supportive and inclusive environments, look after one another, and connect with culture. Show kindness and initiate connection with those who are struggling.
Connect with others: Foster relationships with loved ones, friends, family, and mob. Spend time with others and make meaningful connections.
Connect with nature: Take a break from technology, spend time outdoors, embrace mindfulness, and take care of the world around you. Queensland Mental Health Week provides an opportunity for us to consider and connect with the people and communities that we rely on to help us be mentally healthy. You can read more about each element of the theme including suggestions for activities that can increase connection and boost your mental wellbeing at Theme — Queensland Mental Health Week (qldmentalhealthweek.org.au).

WORLD TEACHER’S DAY
It’s Hats Off to Teachers on Friday 25 October!
Let’s celebrate our teachers and thank them for all the work they do to educate, inspire and empower learners across Australia.
It's time to tip our hats to the incredible Primary Years educators who shape our future.
At St Peters we will be acknowledging this day as a staff group and our students will be encouraged to offer their simple and heartfelt thanks to their teachers who devote endless energy, emotion, time and professionalism to the children under their care.
PREP 2025 ORIENTATION MORNINGS
The first of our Prep Orientation mornings was held this week as we welcomed our students and their parents for 2025.
Our Prep Orientation mornings are invaluable in helping young students transition smoothly into their first year of formal schooling. These sessions provide children with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their new environment, meet their teachers, and interact with future classmates, easing any anxieties they may have about starting school. For parents, orientation mornings offer insight into the daily routines, expectations, and learning experiences their child will encounter. It helps build a sense of community, fostering trust between families and the school. By creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, these mornings lay the foundation for a positive, confident start to a child's educational journey.
Lisa Challenor Head of Primary Years
Junior High
Welcome to Week 2
It has been a tremendous start to Term 4 in Junior High. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know as many students and families as possible and I continue to be moved by the warmth of the St Peters community. The energy across the campus has been wonderful, with students settling into their studies and routines with enthusiasm. In our Junior High Assembly last week, I challenged students to try something new during this final term, whether it be a small shift in their approach to study, or fully embracing a new activity or challenge.
Student Service
A highlight this week was Gabriella’s Bake Sale to raise money for Alzheimer’s research, which beautifully embodied the St Peters’ spirit of service. It was heartwarming to see the community come together, not only to enjoy some delicious treats but also to support a meaningful cause. This kind of initiative exemplifies the dedication to service that is so central to our ethos.
Homework and Assessment
As we progress through the term, I’d like to remind families of the importance of maintaining healthy study routines and organisation. Renowned psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg has excellent advice on setting up productive study habits, which can be found here: Healthy Study Habits. Establishing good routines now will help ease the pressures of the assessment period later in the term.
Uniform Reminders
We are also reminding students of the importance of wearing their uniform with pride. As students have been made aware, we are now in summer uniforms. We ask for your support in ensuring that students continue to present themselves neatly, reflecting the high standards of our community.
Athletics Success
A special congratulations to all the boys in Junior High who represented St Peters at the AIC Athletics meet last Friday. Their efforts were a credit to the College and we are incredibly proud of them.
As always, if you see me at the gate, please feel free to say hello. I am excited to continue meeting more members of our wonderful community.
Warm regards,
Max Forbes Head of Junior High

track & Field News
The St Peters 2024 Boys AIC Track & Field Team finished strong on Friday recording third place and one point off second place. On aggregate points Marist College Ashgrove finished first, Iona College second and St Peters Finished Third.
St Peters ended Day one in fifth place after a competitive first day. Mr Lohe spoke with the boys before the Friday and instilled in them a sense of belief and the need to fight for every point as there was only 47 points separating between second to eighth place. While I spoke with students to remember to support their teammates and find opportunities to celebrate success, be it gaining places in the final lap of the 800m, bouncing back after a foul throw or recording a personal best. The Saints more than delivered on that promise recording 451 points on Friday, the second most on the day with nine personal bests with High Jump and Middle-distance events claiming the lion’s share of achievements.
I would like to acknowledge all the hard work, guidance and expertise that takes place each day, week and month in the lead up to these meets and championships and make special mention of our extensive St Peters Track and Field Coaching team, we thank you for the countless hours and dedication to detail which began in late Term 2, preparing our young men for a competitive two day competition.
I would like to extend my thanks to Mr Lohe, Mrs Kerry Schreiber and Marty Stolberg for helping myself learn what makes St PetersTrack & Field tick and the level of detail and pride that each coach has in helping each athlete the best they can be with countless hours on the track, field or around the selection table ensuring we put our best foot forward.
The Captains Jacob T (Year 12) and Paul D (Year 11) were great ambassadors for their fellow athletes being a source of feedback and support for our younger athletes throughout the meets and championships.
A number of students gained individual success on the day including in Division A events:
Aniketh P (12 years) – 1st 400m, 1st 800m
