Year 6 International Baccalaureate PYP Exhibition
This Thursday and Friday, the annual Year 6 International Baccalaureate PYP Exhibition is being held in the PAC.
The Exhibition is an integral part of the IB Primary Years Programme here at St Peters and forms the culminating learning experience in all PYP schools. The Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’ that students undertake in the lead up to the Exhibition is both rigorous and challenging. Focusing on the central idea, ‘Global Citizens have a responsibility to act on issues of inequality’’, students have researched and will be presenting on topics such as access to water, access to healthcare, access to education and human rights.
I always look forward to visiting the Exhibition and talking with our Year 6 students. The thing that always impresses me most is the real depth of knowledge that our students demonstrate. They are able to talk intelligently and offer many thoughtful solutions to the issues they have inquired into. The maturity, organisation, confidence and passion of our students comes through in the conversations. Through the PYP Exhibition our Year Sixers clearly demonstrate one of the key things we emphasise at St Peters, that of striving to be a lifelong and life-wide learner.
Well done to all involved in this wonderful celebration of learning.

Drop off and Pick up outside St Peters Lutheran College Grounds
As you are aware, child safety and illegal parking around school zones remains a concern for parents, children, local residents and schools alike. Parking spaces during pick up and set down times are at a premium and subsequently, competition for these spaces can lead to poor driver behaviour and potentially dangerous parking practices.
While it is certainly not Brisbane City Council’s intention to make parking near schools an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving during pick up and drop off times. During the school year, Council officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed.
Rules to observe:
Do not park on a yellow line
Do not block resident’s driveways
Do not pull into resident’s driveways
Do not double park
Do not park in the 2 min zone, longer than 2 mins
We thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe.
Ministry
Really present – the sacraments at work
Something real to hold on to. That is a good way to describe the holy sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper as a way that God works with us and in us. A big part of the something real, is that they use very basic, very down to earth elements – water, wine, bread. Those physical things connect us to the unseen, God’s Word, and the ever-present love and mercy of God all around us.
Our life is not meant to be this little, tiny, disconnected thing. Baptism is a once-off, but it joins us to Christ and the daily ongoing pattern of dying and new life. Washing clean. Rebirth. Dying to selfishness, and self-referential trapped thinking, ongoing recriminations and shame. It is entry into God’s family. It is deep belonging. It is the start of a new life of forgiveness and complete acceptance by God of us as we are (not as we or others think we should be).
The Lord’s Supper (also called Holy Communion or the Eucharist) is Jesus coming to us each week, in bread and wine. The impact is individual, communal and beyond. We are reconnected to the Risen Christ. We receive forgiveness freely given, and we are joined together with others to celebrate that. We receive strength and love for the next week of our life journey. The vital thing is that I am given what I need, no matter how competent or powerless I feel. It doesn’t depend on me, it depends on Jesus. I receive forgiveness, love and healing, because that is what his words say. Something real to hold on to, and something down-to-earth.

Academic Matters
From the Academic Hub
Thank-you to our teachers, students and parents who attended the Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday evening for Years 9, 10 & 11. It is always wonderful to connect with families and discuss ways of best supporting our students and their learning.
A busy time for our Year 12 students, in particular our Year 12 IB students who are heading into their last weeks, with next Friday 25 October being their final day of classes. We wish them well for a focussed and productive finish.
A reminder that next Monday is a Student Free day for Verification for all students.

Preparing your child for transition
Transitioning from Prep to Year 1, moving between sub-schools and starting a new year level is an important time for children and their families. Preparations for this change is a gradual process that naturally occurs throughout the year. This includes things such as:
Increasing our expectations of independence with organisational tasks such as unpacking school bags, opening lunch wrappers, organising own belongings for learning.
Year 4 students attending Sport for Life and Library lessons in Upper Primary
Accessing the specialist Art room facilities
Discussions with the Year 6 students about what life will look like after the Primary Years
Conversations and discussions in class, and more
Chapel and assemblies as a P-6 sub school
In Term 4, we have begun preparations for this process more formally in Primary in many ways. We are part way throughout Prep 2020 orientation process which supports our youngest members of the community. Details follow this article.
Initiatives to assist with the transition process also includes an Upper Primary Familiarisation Day for our Year 4 students later in the term as well as a ‘Step-up’ transition session (P-5) where each child will visit a classroom for the year that they will be transitioning to next year to become familiar with their new routines, physical space and academic opportunities on the horizon. Our Year 4 are also participating in a ‘Picnic and Play’ in the Upper Primary where they have a lunch and play in what will be their new surrounds next year.
These sessions acknowledge that transition is not just about the first day; it is a process that happens over time as children and families start to think about and prepare for the upcoming change which can bring up a mixture of feelings. Children can often feel excited about going up a grade or to a new ‘big school’, making new friends and learning new things, but it is not unusual for children to also feel nervous.
Parents play an important role in supporting children through these changes and you can help your child to feel confident about starting school which will assist them to cope with the possible jitters that come up before a change. As simple as it sounds, speaking positively and enthusiastically about the upcoming transition provides support for children, as does listening to concerns and reassuring them that it is okay to feel nervous about change and encourage them to ask questions so that you can clarify any of their worries.
Later in the term, ideas and tips will be shared with you. There will outline how you can support your child to develop some of the important skills they will need to manage the changes during a transition. Many of the suggestions may be things that you are already doing at home, but you may like to choose one or two to focus on over the coming months. Choosing a small number of skills is important as you do not want to overwhelm your child in the lead up to a transition.
Remember that every child is different and they each bring their own set of strengths and skills to a change environment. It is these strengths and skills, along with the support provided by you and our school community that will help them to manage the changes during this period.
SUNSMART
Last week I reminded everyone that as we are a SunSmart school it is important that all children bring their hats each day. Teachers are also working to ensure students drink enough water throughout the day. Drink bottles should be brought daily and these can be refilled throughout the course of the day. We also remind children to have regular drink stops while they are at play.
Prep 2020 Orientation Morning
The second of our Prep orientation mornings was held today, and we are all ready to welcome the youngest of our students for 2020 and their parents. The last Orientation session will be held on Thursday 24 October and our Play Date and Sausage Sizzle on Sunday 27 October. If you know of anyone who has a Prep age child for 2020, please let them know there are limited vacancies for next year.
The annual Day for Daniel is commemorated next Friday 25 October. Students are encouraged to wear a plain red T-Shirt instead of their regular sports shirt on this day. All other school uniform requirements apply. This is not a fund-raising event, rather an opportunity to raise awareness about child safety.
Mr Glass and Mrs Sabri have prepared activities for the teachers to complete during the week to remind students about ways to keep safe, as an adjunct to the lessons from the Morcombe curriculum.
Date claimers:
Monday 21 October is a pupil free day. The staff will be involved in a professional learning day here at the College. OSHC will be operating.
Grandparents Day for our Lower Primary Students is to be held next Wednesday 23 October. Invitations have already gone out.
Primary Years Parent Symposium with Michelle Mitchell is to be held on Tuesday 29 October in the PAC. Bookings are through Eventbrite.
The next Primary Years Parent Support Group will be held on Thursday 31 October and the P&F centre. We will be discussing the upcoming disco and look forward to catching up with you then.

Uniform reminder
There are a number of girls who are wearing their dresses and skirts too short. Please note that both dresses and skirts must be no higher than the base of the knee as outlined in the Junior High School Handbook.
Friday 25 October is ‘Day for Daniel’
The ‘Day for Daniel’ is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. It is about educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to ‘Recognise, React and Report’ if they feel something is not right. Day for Daniel is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia.
The objectives of Day for Daniel are:
To raise awareness about child safety and protection; and to promote a safer community for children.
To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to ‘Recognise, React and Report’.
To educate and equip individuals and communities with knowledge and skills to understand child safety and protection requirements and empower them to take action.
To provide FREE safety and educational material.
To honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.
All students in Junior High will have the opportunity to wear red in recognition of the importance of child safety – this includes to and from school. This is not a free dress day but a ‘themed’ day. Examples of what students can wear includes:
Red embellishments with their normal uniform such as ribbons, socks etc.
HPE shorts or red shorts with a red shirt
If students are unsure of what to wear they should check with their Year Level Coordinator.
AIC Athletics Carnival - On Friday 25 October (Week 3)
All Year 9 boys will attend the QGSSSA Athletics Day as supporters. Boys from Years 7 & 8 will also have the option of signing up to attend as supporters. Acting as supporters on these days is extremely important as this is part of a student’s co-curricular requirement and reflects the quality of their school spirit. It means a lot to the athletics team to have supporters cheering them on. Students wear their formal summer uniform on this day, along with their formal hat. Boys will need to take water bottle, sunscreen, snacks and lunch with them. A canteen is also accessible on the day. All supporters should head to Mayer Oval at the first bell and line up in their Form Classes where rolls will be marked. If parents need to contact their child during the day please do so through Junior High Reception. Attendance for Year 9 boys is compulsory and attendance will fit into the normal school day.

Senior School
Senior School
There is much to look forward to in the Senior School, with numerous significant occasions planned in the coming weeks. Each grade (Years 10-12) have a number of events designed to recognise, appreciate, inform, inspire and celebrate students as they move towards the end of the year and for some the completion of their secondary schooling. Whilst there is a lot to look forward to and celebrate, we also continually encourage our students to finish the year off strong focusing on their academics and striving for their personal best.
Valedictory Dinner
This Saturday night, the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner will be held at Hillstone. For many in the cohort it is the Senior School ‘night of nights’ - It is the event that students most look forward to throughout their Senior School experience with much preparation and planning going into the event.
The Valedictory Parade occurs prior to the dinner in the Chapel Forecourt of the College where the ‘arrivals’ begin from 5:00pm. Students arrive in an array of vehicles which certainly adds to the spectacle. If you have yet to witness the arrivals, please feel free to join us t at this time - It is a wonderful community event with a large crowd gathered to enjoy and celebrate the occasion with the students and their families.
It is however, a night not just for students. Parents and staff also share the special night, as they watch their students and reflect on the journey that they have made to be the fine young men and women they are today. To see the students dressed up and prepared for this very formal event, provides an opportunity for the whole community to recognise the amazing young adults that have become. Congratulations to Ms Jamieson, Mrs Burton and the team for organising this amazing event.
Leadership Installation
The Installation of the Student Prefects for 2019 will occur in a formal ceremony on Wednesday 23 October in The Dron Auditorium. Prefects have a proven record to set an example at all times. It is hoped that they will be critical in the positive reinforcement of our school culture. Prefects are role models to the rest of the school and will assist in the leadership of many events and programs as well as contributing to the ongoing improvement of our College; upholding our motto ‘Plus Ultra’. Our Leaders for 2020 have been elected through a long process with the final group all proving to have a long history of service within our community. We welcome parents to celebrate the installation of these students and wish our prefects well for the rest of the year and 2020.
The Rite Journey Abyss (Wednesday 30 October)
Students in Year 10 have spent the Year participating in classes discussing the transition from childhood to adulthood - Particular focus has been placed on ‘who am I’, ‘relationships’, challenges in life and more topical discussions designed to continue the developmental work from the iconic Ironbark program as well as promote thought around subjects that often ‘fall through the cracks’. The Abyss challenge plays an important role in this whole program and (while details at this stage are confidential) will challenge students to work together, show responsibility, collaboration, problem solving skills and more. The day is not about competing with others or even necessarily ‘succeeding’. The purpose of the event is for students to look at how they deal with challenges, what they learn from it and how they can bring together ideas discussed in the course in a practical, albeit fun, medium.
AIC/QGSSSA Athletics
The annual AIC Athletics Championships are fast approaching (Friday 25 October). This event showcases the amazing athletic talent that exists in our community and provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate the school spirit that exists at the College in support of our male athletes (our girls QGSSSA Athletics Team Competed in their championships late last term). We wish the athletes well and commend spectators who will no doubt do our College proud. There is still an opportunity for students to attend as spectators as per email correspondence received from Mr Butler.
St Peters Golf Day
The St Peters Golf Day will be held at Brookwater Golf Club on the morning of Sunday 3 November.
The St Peters Golf Day is Ambrose format – in a relaxed setting, with high quality prizes and valuable networking opportunities. Funds raised will assist students representing the College in upcoming Service Learning Tours (including Cambodia and Central Australia), with all funds going directly towards communities far less fortunate than our own.
All enthusiastic golfers welcome! We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to be playing the highest ranked course in South East Queensland - Brookwater Golf and Country Club. Cost: $120.00 – includes: motorised buggy, breakfast, lunch and drinks at the presentation function. To register: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/2019-st-peters-higgins-golf-day-tickets-71478031717
It promises to be a most enjoyable day on the golf course. We hope to see you there!

“The Pulse” Win 2nd place at the national Battle of the Rock Bands
Last month St Peters rock band 'The Pulse' entered the national Battle of the Rock Bands competition held at Clairvaux MacKillop College and placed second overall. They were in competition with schools from all over the state including Villanova, Loreto, John Paul College and many others.
In addition to this Connor T won a Gold Award for his drumming performance and Will C best guitarist, and the band has been invited to perform at the Triffid Night Club on 17 December along with four other bands from the competition.
The only thing stopping 'The Pulse' from winning outright was a lack of original material, which the winning band had.
Well done to Connor T, Oona B, Will C, Rabee H and Will Y for an outstanding effort. Here are some of the judges’ comments…
“Your sound/style/level of playing is fitting for the live scene in Brisbane…”
“So much groove and feel… super tasty…”
“First real rock band of the night…”
“Awesome sound and energy…”
“Love how you’re all interacting on stage…”
“We’re still all mind-blown…”

Years 5 and 6 AIC Track & Field Training (selected students only)
Monday and Wednesday afternoon | 3:30 – 4:30pm, Stolz Oval
Today, our AIC Track & Field Athletes had our final Meet for the 2019 season where we had the opportunity to have our last competitive runs, jumps and throws before our AIC Championships next week. This coming Monday, on the Student Free Day, our Athletes will have a team run at the UQ Athletic Centre from 8:00am – 10:00am and it is imperative that our athletes attend, especially our Relay runners. In the past, we have always had a lot of success from this day and I’m sure that 2019 will be no different.
Regular training on Tuesday and Wednesday next week will still go ahead at the usual venues and times leading up to our Championships on the 24 and 25 October. It is imperative that our athletes remain focussed and recognise that efforts and preparations over the next few days will be of utmost importance for our success when we represent the College at the AIC Championship next week.
In order to assist with planning, the details of the AIC Championship meet will be emailed to all boys this weekend. The schedule of events can be found on the St Peters App. Buses have been arranged to transport students to and from QSAC on both Championship days.
We look forward to seeing our boys enjoying the experience, performing to the best of their ability and soaking up the atmosphere. Please keep an eye on emails and the St Peters App for further event details.
Students across Years 5 – 10 will play their second week of games in the Met South West Cricket Competition against other Colleges and clubs this Saturday. Unfortunately, over the past weekend, due to wet weather, many of our first round of matches were cancelled. It is great to see our young St Peters Cricketers enjoying their experience and developing individual skills and teamwork ahead of the AIC competition in Term 1, 2020. All 2020 St Peters Cricketers should well-and-truly be training for next season now as pre-season training started last week. As usual, details regarding training times can be found on the St Peters App.
All the best to all MSW and AIC teams for the seasons ahead.
Training for those boys who are representing the College at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC) in December has started training as of last week. This year is the first time that this event, in its 30+ years of existence, has been run in Queensland and it is promising to be a great event. Please make sure that our AVSC boys finalise their payments soon and more importantly, are attending training with a 100% attendance rate, particularly once the AIC Track & Field Championships are completed. All other preseason training for our 2020 AIC Volleyball season commences in Week 4 so keep an eye on your emails and the St Peters App for training details very soon.
St Peters AIC Water Polo season starts with training this week on Friday. The 2019 season is further condensed this year with all games being played on Sunday 28 October at Iona College, meaning that there will not be week-to-week games as we have had in the past. More details regarding specific times for the game day will be posted in next week’s Boys Sport Rock Article and will also be posted on the St Peters App.
Students have received information from Mr Lawn regarding upcoming team commitments, with the season draw as well as Training Times.
Any further enquiries can be directed to Mr Alex Lawn as Water Polo Coordinator.
