Despite the best efforts of parents around the world, the reality is — there is no such thing as the ‘perfect parent’. However, arming yourself with the right information is a good start!
Research shows that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people is a close relationship with a supportive adult. The current state of mental health in young people at an all-time low. Parents need to familiarise themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children.
Many parents today are over-protective, resulting in children being less independent, unable to problem-solve and self-regulate. Parents are failing to set clear boundaries, which causes insecurity in children. Parents fill their schedule with multiple activities in an effort to avoid their child’s boredom. These circumstances put unwarranted pressure on children.
In SchoolTV - Positive Parenting, parents will learn the best approach for primary and secondary school aged children.
We hope you will take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV; we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information about seeking medical or professional help.
Never has the significance of change been more apparent than when we farewelled our Year 12 cohort for their last day of lessons at St Peters. They had a grand day recalling the events of their years together, celebrating their achievements and enjoying their final moments together as they prepare for exams and look forward to their Valedictory.
Farewelling can be a time when people give you a lot of support. Your friends let you know that you are loved and appreciated. Farewells can be a lovely time, but it can also be a lonely time. There’s the realisation that things will never be the same again, that friends who were with you every day will no longer be there in the same way. There is a grief that goes along with the change in friendships.
Isn't it nice to know that there is someone who never changes? Someone who is always loving, just and dependable? Jesus never changes: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Heb 13:8).
When relationships, studies, jobs and situations in our lives seem overwhelming, seem to swirl over us like a big wave; we can turn to God and know that he is always there. He will never let us down. As the Psalmist said: He alone is my Rock and my salvation; He is my Fortress, I will never be shaken (Psa 62:2). Being human as we are, we will try to depend on ourselves or on others. Then we can be shaken. But if we access his strength and his resources, we will never be shaken.
God works through our friends; he never meant for us to live our lives alone without fellowship. But even the very best of friends cannot always be there, especially in a time of change and leave-taking. But God will. So when we face the changes in our lives, may we remember the unchanging Lord who is always there for each and every one of us.
God bless.
Chaplain Kirstin
One final note: All Saints Day is a day to remember those saints who have gone before us into the arms of our Heavenly Father. You are invited to join us for a short Service on the 1 November, to light a candle for your loved one, to pray and spend time in quiet. We hope to hold it either in or around the Chapel space at 7:30am.

Primary Years Update
In the past weeks, our students have dedicated time to sharing conversations about their spring holidays and exploring the learning opportunities that await them in Term 4. Next week, we look forward to the Year 6 PYP Exhibition, scheduled for Thursday 26 October. I know that numerous Year 6 students have remained dedicated to working on their personal projects during the holiday break. Meanwhile, our Year 4 students have just been to their Luther Heights camp adventure. We are excitedly listening to their tales of determination, joy and newfound knowledge, whilst we continue to pursue our goals back here on campus.
PYPx
Throughout this week, the Year 6 students remain deeply enthused and excited as they continue their PYPx journey. With the highly anticipated evening just a couple of weeks away, this week's focus is on drawing conclusions and taking action. The emphasis is on meaningful action at the local level, aligning student learning with the world around them.
Each group has a well-defined plan and a set of actions corresponding to their individual inquiries. They are diligently tracking their progress using a checklist throughout the week, showcasing their Approaches to Learning of organisation and time management. On Monday, the PYPx groups participated in an Art Extravaganza, collaborating with Sherrie Knipe and their class teachers. This artistic endeavour is coming together nicely, effectively conveying the students' key messages from their individual inquiries.
Additionally, another engaging resource the students have delved into this week is the creation of podcasts. Group workshops, expertly facilitated by our eLearning team, have encouraged students to think creatively and innovatively to share their messages. We consider ourselves exceptionally fortunate to be part of such a talented and well-equipped community that empowers students to take meaningful action.
WORLD TEACHERS' DAY
This year, World Teachers' Day will be recognised on Friday 27 October and presents the College community with an opportunity to acknowledge Primary Years staff and say thank you. This special day, celebrated in more than 100 countries, has wider aims of recognising the importance of motivated teachers and teacher’s assistants, professional development and devoting a day of due respect to College staff.
At St Peters, we will be acknowledging this day as a staff group and our students will be encouraged to offer their simple and heartfelt thanks to their teachers who devote endless energy, emotion, time and professionalism to the children under their care.

Video library which is the full back catalogue of all of Justin's parenting webinars (such as Little People, Big Feelings, Helping your Child Manage Anxiety, Building Resilience and many more).
I found this article from Justin, Nature is fuel for the soul, a particularly helpful reminder of the importance of getting outside being one of the best things for our kids’ mental, physical and emotional health. Spending 30 minutes outside a day will allow you to reach your 3 hours of nature time a week! Here are 6 ideas that can be done with (or without) the kids
Go for a short walk around your neighbourhood when you wake up and don’t touch your phone.
If you have a yard, sit on the grass and feel the sun and don’t touch your phone.
Go to a scenic lookout and watch the sunset and don’t touch your phone.
Spot shapes in the clouds and don’t touch your phone.
Kick a ball, throw a frisbee, ride a bike and don’t touch your phone.
Read a book outside and don’t touch your phone.
Listen to what your body tells you after 30 minutes of outside time (without touching your phone). I guarantee this will help lighten the load.
I am grateful for the dedication of our Primary Years teachers, as they continue to design engaging educational experiences for our youngest students at St. Peters. I look forward to experiencing Term 4 together with all of you.

Promoting Respect in The Digital Age
Living in the digital age with the increased amount of time students are spending online, it is important for the community, home and school to be vigilant in developing a culture of respect and kindness, both online and offline. As digital citizens, it's crucial to recognise the impact our actions can have on others. To cultivate a positive online environment, here are some key messages to reinforce at home:
Empathy is Essential: Before posting or commenting, take a moment to consider how your words might be perceived by others. Empathy helps us understand different perspectives and encourages us to communicate with compassion and understanding. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Think Before You Post: Remember that what you put online can have a lasting impact and significant consequences. Think critically about the content you share, ensuring that it adds value to the conversation. Avoid spreading rumours or sharing sensitive information that could harm or embarrass others
Respect Differences: Diversity is what makes our digital world vibrant. Embrace and celebrate differences in opinions, beliefs and backgrounds. Engage in constructive dialogue and if you disagree with someone, do so respectfully without resorting to personal attacks.
Be Mindful of Tone: Text-based communication can sometimes be misinterpreted due to the absence of tone and body language. When expressing yourself, choose your words carefully and use language that promotes understanding rather than hostility. A friendly and polite tone can go a long way in fostering positive interactions.
Stand Up Against Bullying: If you witness any form of cyberbullying or harassment, don't be a bystander. Speak up for those who are being mistreated and report any inappropriate behaviour to a trusted adult or the appropriate authorities such as the eSafety Commissioner. Together, we can create a supportive online community where everyone feels safe and respected.
Cultivate Digital Well-being / Monitor your Digital Diet: Limit your screen time, prioritise offline activities and maintain a healthy balance between your online and offline life. Remember that your self-worth is not defined by your online presence and it's important to prioritise your mental and emotional well-being.
Think Before You Engage and Know When to Walk Away: ‘Be careful not to do something permanently stupid and harmful because you are temporarily angry, stressed, scared, tired or hungry.’ Before jumping into an argument, ask yourself if it’s worth it. Sometimes, the best response is no response. Taking a step back and consider the impact of your words so as to prevent unnecessary conflict. Walking away doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re strong enough to prioritise your wellbeing and maintain a positive online presence. Sometimes, the most powerful action you can take is to disengage from a negative conversation.
Together we can build a positive digital environment that reflects the values of respect and empathy. Let us all work together to create a safer online space, where everyone feels valued and heard.

Choral Gala Concert, Saturday 7 October
What a special night!
The Choral Gala Concert on Saturday 7 October was a wonderful evening celebrating choral music at St Peters, past and present. We were delighted to welcome back more than 100 Chorale alumni to join current choral ensembles – Junior High Songmakers, Chorale and Chamber Chorale. It was a memorable opportunity for the current Chorale students to have the chance to sing with so many returning alumni and to hear stories of their Chorale. There were a number of alumni parents singing with their children who are current members of Chorale. It was also lovely to see the rekindling of friendships amongst the alumni and the joy that came from singing together again.
The evening also celebrated 40 years of St Peters Chorale and its trailblazing role in choral music, particularly Australian choral music, nationally and internationally. Founded in 1983, under the musical leadership of Graeme Morton, Chorale has played an important part in the history of the College and has been a symbol of musical excellence, both within our community and on the wider world stage. His leadership guided the Chorale and its individual members musically and personally to achieve levels of musical understanding and choral performance unique in Australian schools and, in fact, most adult choirs. This leadership is now continued by current Chorale Director, Kathryn Morton.
Beyond these musical achievements, the nurturing and accepting environment of the Chorale has resulted in enduring friendships, spiritual growth and lasting memories. The number of Alumni who have returned for this concert reflected the impact that this ensemble had on them personally as well as musically.
St Peters Chorale and alumni combined to give a fabulous performance of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem accompanied by the Gala Orchestra (which also included several alumni) and pipe organ. This work has become a consistent classic in the repertoire of St Peters Chorale and formed a musical link across the years for the choir.
The evening concluded with Junior High Songmakers joining the Gala Choir, creating a massed choir of more than 250 singers, to perform John Rutter’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You. Since the late 80’s, this work has been sung by St Peters Chorale as the Blessing for generations of graduating Year 12 cohort at their Valedictory service. This special role in College life is also reflected in its performance at other significant events in the College and for the extended College community. It was an emotive and very fitting conclusion to this special concert.
Congratulations to all of the performers and thank-you to all who worked behind the scenes to support this outstanding evening of music.

St Peters Sensational Sousaphone
The St Peters Band department is pleased to announce that we are now the proud owner of our very first Sousaphone. For those who are uncertain, this is a Marching Tuba – See photo.
This incredible instrument will be used to supplement the St Peters Marching Band on ANZAC day and will have its first outing with the Guard of Honour Band on Friday 17 November. This Sousaphone will add much needed volume and balance to the bass section whilst providing a unique visual and marketing space to the ensemble.
A heartfelt thank you to the P&F for funding this project through their Community Grant Program and to the Music Support Group for supporting our submission and providing additional funds for accessories.
Tuba player William M is looking forward to being the first to play the instrument in a few weeks. William will also have the opportunity to see and hear a number of Sousaphones played in the United States and Canada whilst on tour in December.

Last Saturday, Stoltz Oval hosted a terrific game of Cricket. Our Year 6 mixed team, comprising current students from both St Peters Indooroopilly and Springfield, as well as new students who will join us in 2024, took on the formidable Wests Stars. What unfolded was an exciting match that earned applause from spectators on both sides. St Peters, despite a tremendous effort, narrowly fell short in the final overs. While victory was not ours, this match embodied the spirit of St Peters. It was a moment embraced not only by our visiting parents but also by the players from Wests Cricket Club, reminding us of what makes our college truly special.
Well done to our Year 6 Team: Lachlan G, Max M, Millie H, Toby G, Rubin S, Atticus W, Jonty M, Srish G, Hannah J, Abdurahman S and Andrew Crothers (Coach)
Scorers: Rubin S (27), Hannah J (18) and Millie H (not out 33)

CBSQ JUNIOR SECONDARY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Last Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nine of our Year 7-10 Basketball girls travelled to the Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre for the CBSQ Junior Secondary Tournament. This is the first time in many years St Peters has entered a team in this competition.
To participate, our team qualified through the Wildcard Challenge Tournament played late in Term 3. With teams travelling from all around Queensland it was a wonderful opportunity to play against and challenge our team against the best Basketball schools in the state.
After finishing top of our pool, our end result was 5th place in Division 3, coming up against a tough opponent in Cairns State High School in the pools crossover game. A tough loss but the improvement over the four days and the team camaraderie was great to see. Our girls, Sierra H, Anna B, Naya T, Mia C, Sophia B, Edie R, Asher W, Chloe H, Amelia R, Julia S (injured) & Romi V-B (Ironbark) performed very well over the four days, it was great to see!
Special thanks to our coach Mr Matt Allen-Ankins, his knowledge and teaching of the game of Basketball was fantastic. The highlight of the tournament for all involved was watching the girls embrace the experience and soak up the pressure of performing at this level.
To our wonderful parents, thank you as always for your support, it was a great few days for St Peters Basketball.
ALL-SCHOOLS TOUCH COMPETITION
Two weeks ago, the St Peters U13 & U15 Touch Football teams ventured to the Gold Coast Performance Centre at Runaway Bay for the Queensland All School Touch Tournament. With over 530 teams competing over the 5-day tournament, it was great to see the Maroon and White of St Peters competing for the third year in a row.
Over the three days of competing in the minor rounds, the girls played against quality opposition with many Touch Excellence Schools participating. The girls performed well and the improvement over the tournament was pleasing to see. The exposure to this level of Touch can only improve our girls as we look forward to the 2024 QGSSSA Touch Football season.
U13 Team results: 1 win, 3 draws & 2 losses.
U15 Team results: 3 wins, 2 draws & 2 losses.
Congratulations girls, you represented St Peters with pride and obviously had lots of fun along the way.
A special thanks to the staff and coaches, Mr Gil Bygraves, Mrs Philippa Guppy, Coaches Ropati, Brett & Adian for all their work in the lead up and at this tournament.

BADMINTON
Congratulations and well done to all our Badminton girls who have competed in the QGSSSA Junior and Senior Badminton Competitions over the past two weekend. With four venues pumping with Badminton, the girls enjoyed the competition with special congratulations to our 7B team who place second, a fantastic result. Well done to Ruby C-P, Zoe T, Giselle C, Shanaya D, Olivia L and Sasha W.
Thank you to our great team of coaches who worked hard to prepare the girls in a short space of time, well done.
SOFTBALL
There has been changes to the QGSSSA Softball competition, all Softball will be played in Term 1, 2024. Sign on and details of the Term 4 pre-season training sessions/trials will be advised very soon.
BWPI WATER POLO
Coordinators: Tracey Bruce and Hannah Le Sage – waterpolo@stpeters.qld.edu.au Over the last two Saturdays our teams have played in mini trial games (2 x 4-minute halves) with some teams playing 2 games and others 3 depending on the number of teams registered in each division.
St Peters have entered 10 teams into the BWPI competition, and these mini games determine the division they will play in for the season. With this done and dusted, we are now eagerly awaiting the 2023/2024 Round 1 draw.
The grading games have been a great way for our new players to start to learn the game and for our teams to bond together.
It has been pleasing to see the improvement in our teams. Please keep an eye on the St Peters App for the Round 1 draw, this will be uploaded each week as soon as it is available.
The Learn to Row program for our Year 7-8 students got off to an enthusiastic start in the ergo gym yesterday. Students new to rowing started their session learning our DYNAMIC SHED WARM UP from a number of our experienced rowers before jumping on the rowing ergometers and learning the basics of the rowing stroke. Rowing has a language all it’s own – so our new students were also schooled in how to “come to the catch”, how to “sit at the finish”, what we mean when we talk about “the drive” and “the recovery”.
Students also had the opportunity to use our swingulator (our rowing machine that operates much more like a boat with oars) and finished their session with some team relay challenges. It was a high energy, physically and mentally stimulating 90 minutes and there were lots of red, smiling faces heading home looking forward to next week when they get out in a boat for the first time on the Brisbane River.
Learn to Row sessions run on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoon for 5 weeks this term. There are still a few spaces available on Tuesdays and Thursdays for anyone who would like to try rowing.
Please contact Mrs Helen Allard for more information.
Swimming sessions have commenced in at the 50m pool for any girls playing Water Polo or wishing to do pre-season QGSSSA swim training.
Wednesday afternoons at the 50m pool: 3:20pm-4:00pm

The goal is to empower your teenagers to thrive not only in their academic pursuits but also in their personal lives, at home and as they step into their futures.
Generation Next is carefully designed around five pivotal areas, ensuring your teen gains skills that will serve them for a lifetime:
Building Self-confidence: This program fosters a strong sense of self-assurance, helping your teen embrace challenges and seize opportunities with confidence.
Enhancing Communication Skills: Effective communication is vital in today's interconnected world. Your teen will learn how to articulate ideas, engage with others and express themselves fluently.
Interpersonal Skill Development: Navigating relationships is a critical skill. Generation Next equips your teen with the ability to build meaningful connections and foster positive interactions.
Teamwork and Leadership Skills: Whether leading or collaborating, leadership and teamwork skills are paramount. Teens will be guided to become effective team players and emerging leaders.
