Earlier this week the College Prefects for the coming 12 months were installed into their office at a special ceremony in front of their peers and parents in the Dron Auditorium. Thirty-three young people were commissioned to serve as Prefects.
The theme of my address for this occasion was ‘Leadership – Small Actions, Big Impact’. Too often we associate leadership with doing big acts. We think we have to do great things to effect change. It is too easy to overlook the deep and lasting impact that little things, everyday things we can do can have on the lives of other people – of our classmates, of our friends, of our family, of our College. It is tempting to overlook the small behaviours, the unseen actions like a listening ear for a classmate; a gentle word of encouragement to a peer; a thank you to younger students; a smile for the new student; the helping hand to a teacher; the self-directed picking up the piece of litter in the school yard; and the ‘can I help you?’ to neighbour in need. It is in these seemingly small actions or behaviours that leaders will make a difference and have the biggest impact on the lives of others.
I challenged the incoming team of Prefects, as they assume their formal leadership roles, to be conscious, in fact, be deliberate about the small actions they can take to have a big impact on the lives of students and staff here at St Peters. I encouraged them to reflect each morning as they put on the Prefect Badge to think ‘Small Actions, Big Impact’.
The expectation of ‘Small Actions, Big Impact’ is not restricted to the Prefect body. These seemingly everyday behaviours are something that every student, every adult in our community can do. Imagine what an amazing community we would have if we all adopted the ‘Small Actions, Big Impact’ approach.
I wish all our student leaders God’s richest blessing as you serve our community, and I look forward to seeing their impact through both big and small actions as together we strive to make St Peters a place where each member of our community can flourish.
Tim Kotzur Head of College
Ministry
It’s A Gift!
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8
We installed Student Leaders this week. Students applied for leadership responsibilities and were chosen by peers and staff alike. It’s a curious task for students to undertake. Leadership is not something everyone does naturally. Not even being accomplished in a particular field will necessarily make a person an effective leader. We can learn and develop leadership skills if we try.
At school I remember studying Maths, English, History, some other subjects, but not Leadership. We learned about leadership by experience, mainly through sport. Some students learned to lead through Scouts, Cadets and Youth Groups, but usually the most well-regarded students were made Captains.
Leadership is still not part of the curriculum. While Harvard Business School may be well into the future for our students who wish to pursue leadership development, we need to start developing leaders from the outset. For any group or community to flourish it will need leaders to guide it. Thus, leadership is encouraged and supported throughout the St Peters journey.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome in the 1st Century AD, identifying gifts present in their community. These gifts helped build up their community. Rome was a place that didn’t welcome or react kindly to Christians. Quite the opposite, there were times of periodic persecution of Christians there. For the wellbeing of the community, they needed all their gifts to be activated, including the gift of leadership.
Paul mentions prophecy, service, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership and showing mercy. In other letters he mentions other gifts. Leadership is one of these gifts. Those who have this gift of leadership should lead and lead diligently.
Our Student Leaders have been identified as having gifts of leadership in various ways. Each Student Leader is different and will bring their own approach and emphasis to their role. As a community we celebrate their willingness to lead and commit to supporting them in their leading.
We thank God for our student leaders and pray God blesses them for their work in the coming year.

News from Langer Library
It is Week 3 of Term 4 and the BrisNet TL Inter-School Readers’ Cup competition season returns in full swing.
This year, after two years of disruption, the contest is back in face-to-face mode: Teams of four to five students each read a set of five books, prepare for weeks and then meet with other teams one evening to answer quiz questions from the books.
Stuartholme School was hosting the 2022 Year 10 event on Tuesday 11 October, and Jess M, Ella Y, Josephine B and Mijili P represented St Peters. Collaborative work, enthusiasm and dedication brought success: after four rounds of an exciting tournament, our team finally placed third: hats off Year 10 students!
On the same week, last Wednesday night, our College hosted the Year 9s event in the Langer Library.
Organised in eight teams, students from BBC, Brisbane SHS, Kenmore SHS, Marist College, Stuartholme School and St Peters spent the evening competing.
The results were very close and kept on changing during the night. Eventually, Brisbane SHS took the cup home this year, winning by only a half point! Congratulations!
In the words of the participants: we truly had a “wonderful evening”, and “everyone had so much fun and the food was delicious.” To top it all, it was lovely to have the Head of College, Tim Kotzur, watch the event and to present the awards to the winning teams.
Well done Harper K, Georgie W, Ava B, Sarah-Grace R, Gabriella D and Molly R.
We are looking forward to seeing how our Year 7 and Year 8 teams will do this week: Good luck to all participants.

Year 4 Camp – Luther Heights
How good is camp!! I can honestly say going to camp were some of my favourite times at school. I can still remember in Year 5 going to Maroon Dam and having to put our clothes in a garbage bag as we boarded canoes and crossed the dam for a few days of rock climbing, orienteering and team games. We were given a package of food that we had to ration for the trip, but we left it outside on night one and the possums took it all. Camp gives you lifelong memories as you get away from pampered lifestyles and become immersed in an environment full of challenges, self-development and friendship. Our Year 4’s recently had the chance to build their own memories, riding zip lines, building rafts out of plastic drums to carry them across the dam, constructing catapults out of PVC pipe, climbing trees and braving the worst of beach conditions to ride boogie boards along the waves.
Last week our Year 4 students embarked on their first ever three-day camp at Luther Heights facility at Coolum. After attending the inaugural Year 3 camp in 2021, confidence and excitement was high amongst the group for a longer camp experience, filled with activities aimed to challenge and extend their personal development. The increased camp duration also allowed staff to spend periods of downtime with the students playing sport, colouring, playing Uno or just generally getting to now each other better. The 200-metre flying fox has always been the blue-ribbon activity, but this year faced some stiff opposition with boogie boarding, koala climb, mini catapult, raft building and team building rounding out the array of activities. Outside of these fun filled challenges the students loved eating in a dining hall and sleeping in bunks with their friends. To say we were proud of the way the students conducted themselves on camp would be an understatement. The grit shown in poor weather, the growth mindset demonstrated when met with failure or challenge and the gratitude towards the camp instructors made for a camp we will never forget.

Thanks, must go to the Year 6 teachers and mentors of the students and to Mrs Simone Mitchell, for her tireless work and critical eye, which ensured that the experience for everyone was the best it could be.

'Liveability' visit from Cr Mackay
Our Year 7 students are investigating aspects of liveability (especially as it relates to their local area) and were very grateful that Old Scholar, and Brisbane City Councillor, James Mackay, accepted our invitation to speak at the Year Level Assembly.
He spoke about the many strengths of our area, the challenges that it may face, and how different people may have different perspectives on issues. He also spoke about what he and Council are planning to do now and, in the future, to continue to make this area a wonderful place to live. Learning how people can have a voice to Council via the Better Brisbane Proposals provoked some very interesting suggestions. Students especially appreciated Cr Mackay’s insights into planning for the 2032 Olympics, and how the Olympics are being prepared for even now.
Year 7 Gardasil (HPV) Immunisation
A reminder that the Year 7 second Gardasil (HPV) Immunisation Clinic provided by Ozcare is next Friday 28 October in Periods 1 & 2. Students will be taken to the clinic at the PAC by their P1 or P2 teacher, including those students who are not getting vaccinated.
Any student who is absent on the day can obtain a free make up vaccination through either your GP (excluding their consultation fee), or your local Brisbane City Council Immunisation Clinic.
If you are a family new to the school since the first immunisation clinic in Term 1 and have questions regarding this, please get in touch with the Health Centre nurses by ringing 3377 6102 or h.centre@stpeters.qld.edu.au.

TERM 4 SPORTS
If the girls choose more than one sport, communication is the key, please advise the respective sport coordinator at the start of the season.
Congratulations to the girls from Years 7 - 9 who competed in the QGSSSA Junior Badminton competition last Saturday, it was a great day across all four venues. Thanks to our Badminton Coordinator Laura Buckby and our team of coaches for all their work in preparing the girls.
Last Saturday was Week 2 of the mini grading games, with that done and dusted, we are now eagerly awaiting the 2022/2023 Round 1 draw. The grading games have been a great way for our new players to start to learn the game and for our teams to bond together. It has been pleasing to see the improvement in our teams.
Our U13 Div 3 team with no subs and a number of the girls backing up from the U12 Div 2 game showed huge improvement, they were tired but really showed some great teamwork.
U18 Div 3 won 4-1 against AHS then again 6-0 to St Margaret’s. They are a lovely and positive bunch of girls with so much potential and just pure kindness. I was blown away by their attitude towards the game and the in depth debrief they had after the games to talk about their own strengths and what they want to work on as a team.
Our Open team came away with two close wins. It is such a pleasure to watch Coach Nacole and the girls interact during the matches.
A huge shout out to Mrs Champion and Mr Kotzur for coming into training late and giving our Open team a pump-up speech prior to this week’s Round 1 fixture.
Congratulations to our U15 Div 2 coach, Tenealle Fasala, who has been selected to represent Australia in a 15 strong team for the FINA World League Super Finals in Spain from 2-6 November 2022. The class of ’82 had a fantastic turnout at the Mofos event space at Southbank. Good food and great company made for a night to remember.
Class of 1992
The class of ’92 started their celebrations at the Merthyr Bowls club with a gourmet BBQ and a spot of lawn bowls to break the ice for those they hadn’t seen for 30 yrs. Special guest Jane Greenwood was a highlight of the evening. The night wound up when the venue closed and rumour has it the party didn’t stop there!
