Ministry
Wisdom from Above
If you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such 'wisdom' does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual… the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:14-17
What is the difference between being clever and being wise? Our Bible reading from the New Testament letter of James gives us a clue into what this difference might be.
The letter of James is a very practical book that focuses on what a good life looks like. It focuses on wisdom and active faith. The clue from James as to the difference between being clever and wise is this. There is one type of wisdom that is from above, and there is one type of wisdom that is from below. The wisdom from above or from heaven, is as James puts it, humble, pure, peace-loving, considerate of others, full of mercy, impartial, and sincere. The wisdom from below or from earth harbours envy and selfish ambition. It boasts, it denies, it thrives in disorder, and even harms others.
The difference between these two types of wisdom is that the wisdom from above, from God, is concerned about others. It considers other people; it is not selfish, envious, or unthinking toward others. It is always aware of and always takes care of others. It is outward-focused. That’s the difference between a wise and clever person.
A wise person puts their knowledge and skill into practice for the benefit of others, not just themselves. They move beyond selFISHness to selfLESSness. To put it another way, you could say that a selfish person stinks like a bad fish. No one wants to hang around them for that long. You can put up with a selfish person for a little, but eventually, the stink becomes too much. Whereas a selfless person not only thinks of others but helps others. They think of themselves less and more of others.
That’s really what we are about as a school community too. The purpose of learning in our College is not just for us to be the best people we can be, no, the purpose of our learning is to see how we can use what God has given us to bless, help and serve others. That’s true wisdom from above.

Around the College
From Langer Library
During the second week of the Inter-School Readers’ Cup competitions, Year 8 students met on Tuesday night at St Aidan's Anglican Girls' School in Corinda. Other schools participating to this event were: Brigidine, Brisbane State High, Brisbane Boys' College, Hillbrook, Stuartholme and St Aidan's.
Eager to successfully replicate their previous year’s places, Anna F, Keer F, Madeline G, Yaqing (Daisy) L, Isabella N, Ava R, Floria S, Maxine S, Rachel T and Matilda W organised themselves into two teams and prepared for weeks during lunch times in the Langer Library, with a cheerful combination of chocolate, Historical Fiction, sandwiches, Science-Fiction, ice-cream and Fantasy.
What an inspiring delight it has been to have this giggling, motivated and friendly bunch of readers in the Library.
Our congratulations to all contestants and especially to Brisbane SHS who won the Year 8 Reader’s Cup this year. We are looking forward to next year.
And finally, on Wednesday, two teams of St Peters Year 7 students braved the rain to join ten other groups in Enoggera for their Readers’ Cup competition.
Welcomed at Hillbrook Anglican School, the evening took place in the Tiered Learning Centre (TLC) under the astute gaze of Hermione, the (famous) library’s dog.
The Cup itself did not come back to St Peters this year, but what a night to remember: full of laughters, lollies, stories and friendship.
Bravo Sophie-Anais B, Scarlett H, Leona L, Tharushi M, Claire W, Xincheng (Sadie) W and Yixuan (Chrissy) Z and let’s take a crack at it again in 2023!

Wear red for Day for Daniel!
With the National Day for Daniel being commemorated on Friday 28 October at St Peters, the students in the Primary Years have been involved in a range of classroom activities throughout the week that centre around the theme of safety at home and at school.
Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. Recognise, React and Report is the theme for Day for Daniel and children could wear a red t-shirt, ribbon or socks and bring a gold coin donation as a way of taking action within our community.
Green Thumbs in Year 1
God creates, God provides, God sustains…
In Year 1, we have been learning about the Creation Story from the Bible. As we know, this parable teaches us to be good stewards and care for the planet and our local environment. Our Term 3 Unit Of Inquiry, ‘Sharing the Planet’ led to the establishment of the ‘Save the World’ lunchtime club, while our Term 4 unit… ‘How we Organise Ourselves’, saw students investigating how places in a community can meet our needs. The new term also saw the establishment of 12 new garden beds for the Year 1 students to plan and plant… Many seeds have been sown and seedlings carefully planted, with matching labels showing their place. The garden has become a literal ‘hive’ of activity – buzzing every lunchtime with students carrying watering cans, shovels, buckets… showing care and being ‘responsible’ have become key concepts within our learning. Chappy K has visited the new space and blessed each garden bed, as well as the new rock reflection space under the Harmony Tree.
God creates, God provides, God sustains, and we respond.

The Arts
VAPAr 2022
The red carpet event in the amphitheatre featured a final roll call for the Year 12 Art and Film students, the Film Television and New Media Awards and an acknowledgment of visual art achievements in 2022.
The Jazz Combo and Guitar ensemble performed, Year 11 music videos and animations were screened throughout the event. The Art exhibition featured the Visual Art Award for Excellence: People’s Choice voting and the Capture Photography Awards-voting. Fashion contributed a sophisticated fascinator display and hospitality students provided the box office and bar service.
In the Dron Auditorium students presented a theatrical performance of the intense gothic drama The Picture of Dorian Gray based on the novel by Oscar Wilde. The play tells the story of a young socialite in 1890s London, who unknowingly enters a Faustian bargain: his portrait, rather than his own body, will bear the physical effects of his sins and indulgences.
Congratulations to the cast of 30 who under Mr Chapman's direction had to push themselves emotionally and physically whilst grappling with the play’s complex dramatic meanings, questioning the very nature of life and humanity.
This performance challenged students’ performance skills and required commitment to extensive rehearsals.
Congratulations to the cast who more than rose to the occasion in both performances - Friday and Saturday.
Audience reviews raved about the professional standards of the performances.
Thank you to everyone who contributed and supported VAPAr 2022.
All Choirs Finale Concert 2022 – A Night of Celebration!
On Friday 21 October, the ten choirs of St Peters came together to celebrate 2022 in a fabulous night of performances. The Finale Concert was a wonderful opportunity for all who sing in the choral program to enjoy performing for each other the wide variety of music which they have been singing. It also showcased for the sell-out audience, the musical growth and development which occurs across the years in the choral program from the youngest choir Poco Voce (Years 1 and 2) to the most senior choir, St Peters Chorale (Years 9–12).
An important part of a Finale Concert is to farewell and thank the Year 12’s for the contribution and leadership which they have given to the Choral Program. The 17 Year 12’s who graduated on Friday night have been a very significant part of program, some since Lower Primary, and will be greatly missed. They looked spectacular in their formal attire as we farewelled them in style. We later shared their final celebration cake in a private function for the Year 12 students and their parents.
The evening finished with the nearly 400 members of the choral program, led by the Year 12’s, performing 'You Raise Me Up'.
A wonderful evening such as this does not come about without a lot work behind, and in front, of scenes by a lot of people. Thank you to the student mentors, vocal tutors, piano accompanists, music administration, music teaching staff, and my choral conducting colleagues – Ms Emma Richie, Mrs Jenny Flottmann, Ms Louise Baldwin, Ms Kathryn Morton – for all they have done across the year to support the terrific young people who sing in the choirs at St Peters. Thank-you to Colin Bushell Photography for the wonderful photographic memories from the night.

Yesterday our Junior Softballers enjoyed the final day of the Junior Softball competition, and our girls did amazingly well, with limited preparation due to the cancellation of trainings from the wet weather. Our six teams were led by Ms Holman and our amazing team of coaches, Mr Bygraves, Nat W, Loryn, Rachel, Tess and Meredith, the improvement in the girls from Day 1 was very pleasing to see.
Thank you to the girls for their enthusiasm and commitment, thank you also to our parents for your support and to our Junior High teachers, we are appreciative of your support to allow the girls to leave class early.
We thank our Softball Coordinator Nat Holman and our team of coaches for all their work 😊
Round 1 brought us a very rainy day! Best team performance for the day was our U14 D1 girls coming away with a huge win 13-4. Our U16 D2 team was in heavy battle down by one goal with 10 seconds on the clock and Hannah put the ball into the back of the net to equalise the game. This result had Mr Kotzur off his chair and excited to see the St Peters girl’s performance. Our Open game was crazy to say the least. The clock froze, we had some funny ref calls, the girls played extra time, we were up and then we allowed Somerville to score a couple of quick goals in succession, luckily, we held on for the draw.
We missed a few girls from our program last week as there was a swimming carnival on and we look forward to having them back for Round 2.
Please CLICK HERE for the Round 2 Draw, it can also be found on the St Peters App.
