31 October 1517 is the day Martin Luther famously distributed his 95 Theses on Indulgences in Wittenberg, Germany. 503 later, that day still influences us dramatically today. Being the eve of All Saints Day (1 November) Wittenberg was teeming with visitors who had come to view Duke Frederick’s collection of Holy Relics, for which they would receive a Papal Indulgence. The release of Luther’s theses was the tipping point for the Reformation and marked a new direction in European and world history. Luther’s questions about the practices and abuses within the Church spilled over to the public arena and his concerns could not be dismissed.
Luther’s willingness to challenge the Church’s teachings came following his search to know God’s grace. It’s a search many young people are on. As a young adult Martin Luther went through some trials of spirit which caused him to question his relationship with God.
As a young Law Student Martin was travelling from university at Erfurt to his home in Mansfield when he had an accident. The height of fashion for young men was to carry a ceremonial sword, but on his journey home he was injured by his sword and nearly bled to death. His friend left him in the field to summon a doctor who was able to stitch him up. That night the wound opened again, and he nearly bled out a second time. Also around this time two young lawyers and two fellow law students died from an outbreak of the plague in Erfurt. These troubles – a near death experience, the death of friends and close contacts, and the real and present threat from the plague must surely have shaken his confidence is his world. Where was God in this suffering?
Martin thought by entering the monastery he would experience closeness with God. The exact opposite turned out to be true. The more he prayed, worked and confessed his sins, the more he doubted God. He could always think of more things to pray for, more work to do and more sins to confess. He experienced God as an onerous taskmaster, who demanded perfection he was never able to achieve.
The insight God gave to him was that “the righteous shall live by faith” from Romans 1:17. That is, to be right with God, we live by trusting his word, not by completing a never-ending list of good works. Not that good works are unimportant, rather they are a response to God, not the way we find God. This insight opened up for Martin a new understanding of his relationship with God. God was good and gracious and had, in Jesus, already done everything needed for Martin to please God. With this revelation Martin was confident to stand on the promises of God in the Word of God and he refused to budge on this understanding of God’s grace. He would only change his mind if shown by Scripture and plain reason where he was wrong.
Luther’s questions as a young person resonate today. Where is God in a world of suffering and death? In a world that is frightening and uncertain? In a world with coronavirus and unemployment? The good news is he is still with us in Jesus. He loves us unconditionally.
That’s the good news that gives us hope in all of the darkness and bleakness of life. The Church needs Reformation constantly to preserve the Gospel of grace. We pray God preserves this good news always!

Friday 30 October is ‘Day for Daniel’. This is a National Day of Action and Students 4 Students are promoting this day to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. ‘Day for Daniel’ is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia.
All students in Junior High and Senior School will have the opportunity to wear red in recognition of the importance of child safety – this includes to and from school. This is not a free dress day but a ‘themed’ day. Examples of what students can wear includes:

Bibliophiles, rejoice! Last week, while assignments were in full swing, the Langer Library celebrated two main events of its literary calendar: '2020 Book Week', including the 'CBCA Book of the Year Award', and 'International School Library Day', held on Thursday 22 October.
During lunchtimes, our students enjoyed a myriad of activities, including movies and popcorns and a very popular Scavenger Hunt testing their book knowledge. Other students preferred to take some mindful and relaxed group time while colouring bookmarks and chatting to each other.
This Monday was also the first day of external ATAR exams for our Year 12 cohort and we wish them all the best for this new adventure.
Tomorrow (Friday 30 October) is Day for Daniel! This day is all about raising awareness for child safety in memory of Daniel Morcombe, who was abducted and murdered in December of 2003 when catching a bus on the Sunshine Coast. Even though we are very blessed to live in a safe community with numerous staff to ensure our safety, we all must be aware of how we can keep ourselves and our peers safe.
The best way to keep yourself and your peers safe is to learn and remember your three R’s: Recognise, React and Report. Be aware of your surroundings and listen to your body’s signals – sweaty palms, a pounding heart and goose bumps are key indicators that something isn’t right. Recognising the danger is one of the hardest, but most important, steps in staying safe. Once you’ve recognised the danger, call out and make everyone aware that something is wrong. After you’ve reacted to the danger, immediately contact a trusted adult, such as a parent or teacher, or triple 0 if it’s an emergency.
Students 4 Students have been actively promoting the message of Recognise, React and Report at Year Level Assemblies throughout the week, ensuring that students know how they can keep themselves safe, especially during the holiday season. Students are also encouraged to wear red tomorrow to show their support and raise awareness for the day. This could include:
We are very fortunate at the College to have lots of people who are available to help. There are many Teachers, Coordinators, Chaplains, Pastors and Counsellors you can talk to. Don’t be afraid to get help, and don’t be afraid to check up on your peers. We all must look after each other as we come to the end of the school year. For more information about the day and some helpful safety resources, please visit the Daniel Morcombe Foundation website: https://danielmorcombe.com.au/
Thank you, and stay safe.

While many of us would have enjoyed being at one or both of the 2020 Football Grand Finals held last weekend (AFL or NRL), one of our Year 1 students, Keoni C, was fortunate enough to get his hands on the Premiership trophy. A staunch Aussie Rules supporter, Keoni had the good fortune to be able to get up close and personal. I’m sure he will remember this for a long time to come!
In accordance with the theme of World Teachers Day this Friday 30 October, the staff in the Primary Years have been looking after and appreciating each other for their contribution to the education sector. On Friday celebrations for the Lower Primary staff will take place on Assemblies, while the Upper Primary staff will be thanked in a less formal, but nonetheless a heartfelt way.
If you have time, please contact your child’s teacher to acknowledge the work that they have done this year to positively influence your child’s life!
With National Day for Daniel being commemorated on Friday 30 October across Australia, the students in the Primary Years have been involved in a range of activities throughout the week that centre around the theme of safety at home and at school.

Recognise, React and Report is the theme for Day for Daniel and children will be asked to wear a red t-shirt and bring a $2 coin donation as a way of taking action within our community. Please ensure that the students shirts follow sun safe guidelines and remember to ask your children all about their important safety messages on the day.
Our eLearning team have a dedicated page in our Learning Management system, Firefly which addresses many common questions and fears parents have about technology and wellbeing for their child. This page is a collation of resources on eSafety and Wellbeing Resources for Parents. This page contains a list of general resources and more specific resources are linked to on the right. Please familiarise yourself with this page so that you and your child are clear about rights and responsibilities of every member of the family to support children staying safe.

It was a great honour to present the St Peters Best Performance at AIC Track & Field to a 12-year-old student who epitomised the College moto of ‘Plus Ultra’. Young Felix Y displayed true tenacity and grit and was rewarded for his efforts scoring most points for St Peters over any other athlete.
The prestigious Earle Bailey Shield for St Peters ‘Spirit of Track & Field’ this year was shared by two young men who constantly displayed dedication, commitment and complete team spirit. Congratulations to both Oscar K and Matt C (also our 2020 Team Captain).
After participation at the recent Queensland School Sport (QSS) state championships, St Peters student Gabriel V C has been selected to be a member of the Queensland School Sport 14-18 Years Baseball Merit Team 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, QSS teams will not be competing at any higher competition in 2020. We would however still like to acknowledge Gabriel’s selection in the QSS merit team. A great achievement, congratulations!
This Sunday 1 November, St Peters will field two Water Polo teams to compete at the annual AIC Water Polo Gala Day. This year it will be held at and hosted by Iona College. We wish both our Junior Team (Years 7-9) and our Senior Team (Years 10/11) the best of luck and every success.
On Monday 26 October was the annual AIC Gold Day, the Balharry Shield held at the Indooroopilly Golf Course. This year only one St Peters student, Jacob M proudly represented St Peters Lutheran College. Jacob played solidly finishing off a great day of AIC golf by hitting 4 over his handicap (gross score of 94).
‘I definitely left a few shots out there, but that is normally the case. I’m happy with the way I played and had I great time talking with my group members. I played with one of the guys that I played with last year, so we spent a lot of time talking about how our games had changed since last we played together. The course was in great condition after all the rain we had over the weekend. A few bunkers were full of water, but, other than that, the course was pretty much perfect.’ (Jacob M – St Peters Golfer)
Now that we are well underway and into Term 4, we would like to remind all students who are wishing to participate in either AIC Cricket or AIC Volleyball, to ensure that they are regularly checking both their emails and the St Peters App for updates and information about pre-season training and selection trials.
It is vitally important that any student in 2021 (Years 7 to 12) who wishes to participate in either sport makes every effort to attend these Term 4 training sessions.
Following are the contact details for both respective sporting coordinators for the 2020/21 seasons:

With Round 3 of the 2020/2021 BWPI Water Polo season played last weekend I had the pleasure of watching three of our teams work hard in the pool for St Peters. Amongst the storms and the heavy rain, the girls came away with some great results. I enjoyed meeting many future students who will be joining us at the College next year.
The Junior Softball season is underway with the wet, stormy weather cancelling day two of competition. A big well done to all Junior Softball girls who have competed well on the two days of competition so far.
The girls are enjoying the fun atmosphere while learning the game of Softball, a big thank you to our Coordinator Ms Natalie Holman and our team of coaches who do a great job.
Congratulations to our amazing athletes who competed in the 2020 Queensland All School Championships on the weekend.
Well done to...
Congratulations also to Lara O who has been named in the 17-19 Years Girls Water Polo Merit Team, a great effort to be selected after playing for Met West at the Queensland School Sport State Championships.
Good luck to all girls playing Sport for St Peter this weekend.
Coordinators: Mrs Elaine Ripamonti & Mrs Tracey Bruce – waterpolo@stpeters.qld.edu.au
Water Polo is well and truly underway, and the girls have approached the season with gusto and are quickly developing and acquiring new skills with the exposure and expertise of our new and returning coaches. With storm season upon us, Water Polo training is always going to be up for negotiation on the night, so it is important that all parents have downloaded the St Peters App as this is the quickest and most efficient way to communicate with parents for last minute cancellations to training. If it is raining training will go ahead however in the event of lightening or a storm it will be cancelled. We will communicate to parents when and if training is cancelled in the event this should occur.
Thank you to the Team Managers who have also taken on these duties this year. With COVID restrictions at pool venues it has added another layer of responsibility to all coaches, managers and parents to ensure our girls keep playing Water Polo. We appreciate all parents continued support during these challenging times.
Coordinator: Ms Natalie Holman – n.holman@stpeters.qld.edu.au
