Tomorrow, Friday, is the final day for our Year 12s. It marks the end of their formal educational journey at the College. For 24 of the Class of 2020 that journey began with us 13 years ago in Prep, with others joining as the years progressed. Whether our Year 12s have been with us for 13 years, 5 years, or for 1 year, I wish to acknowledge and thank each member of the class of 2020 for the contribution that they have made to St Peters.

It would be fair to say that 2020 in many respects wasn’t the Senior Year our 12s were hoping for. The COVID-19 pandemic robbed them of some of the things that Seniors traditionally look forward to. It would have been easy (and understandable) if they gave up, wallowed in self-pity, and claimed it was all so unfair. No one would have blamed them if they did. But they didn’t. They kept going. They put one foot in front of the other. They made the most of a challenging situation. They showed grit, determination and character. They were positive role models for the rest of the student body. They demonstrated gratitude for the little things. They helped, cared for and supported each other through these challenging days. They led our College with distinction. This year each of them has embodied what it meant to be a fine young St Peters person. Well done - St Peters is so very proud of each one of you.

St Peters will always be part of their story, just as they will always be part of the St Peters story. We wish the Class of 2020 God’s richest blessing as they begin the next phase of their life’s journey, and look forward to their continuing involvement in our community through SPOSA as a ‘Saint for Life’.

The end of the school year is fast approaching. Assessment and exams are on the minds of many and determine the last few weeks. But there is also a sense of eager anticipation in the air: final sport games are being played and music concerts have been staged; students are awarded for their achievements in Presentation mornings and this week the Year 12 cohort of 2020 will pass through the Guard of Honour and graduate after what will certainly always be remembered as a quite unusual year.

It is in many ways a time of Advent, the time of ‘not yet’, of eagerly awaiting the bigger things to happen; a time of joyful expectation, during which preparations take shape for the big celebration to come.

We have - in a different way - been in a time of Advent for a long time, waiting for the restrictions to ease, for vaccinations to be released, all the time longing for the return to some ‘normality’. A long waiting for those amongst us who haven’t been able to see and meet with family or friends that live further away.

It will culminate with the leaving of the Year 12s, with finalising school work, writing exams and handing in last assignments, with further easing of restrictions and with the start of the holidays; with the time of living Advent until finally Christmas can be celebrated, with the coming of God to us in the Christ child, bringing and proclaiming peace, joy and hope for the whole world!

We are nearly there! Hear the encouragement from the one who announces what is to come yet not to be seen:

When we live in the time of Advent in the here and now, we can look confidently into the future and be hopeful, because the one who announces his coming to us, is no other than the One who has come to us in the Christ child and has been with us on the journey all along, who welcomes us in the ‘tomorrow’ and paves the way, inviting us to join in and celebrate in the feast to come!

In 2021, St Peters, in partnership with the St Peters Old Scholar Association, will offer children and grandchildren of Old Scholars the opportunity to purchase a SPOSA 2nd or 3rd Generation Blazer Pocket.

The aim of this program is to acknowledge the tradition of returning generations, and current St Peters students from Year 7 who have had parents or grandparents attend St Peters in previous years are eligible to wear the Generations Blazer Pocket. 

Please contact SPOSA@stpeters.qld.edu.au to obtain your pocket award authorisation and standard procedures document, should you wish your student/s to have a Generations Blazer Pocket ordered.

Applying the Generations Blazer Pocket will incur a fee – and payment must be made upon collection from Shop 45.

Order requests submitted to SPOSA after Friday 5 February, 2021 cannot be accepted.

Luther House, one of the earlier buildings of St Peters Lutheran College, Indooroopilly, used in various ways over the years, including for worship and assemblies, as an administration building, classrooms, and lately as Senior School reception and IT centre is about to be replaced with a new modern Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre. We will say 'good bye' to Luther House at the 9am service on Sunday 29 November, with Old Scholar Bishop Paul Smith preaching and presiding over a decommissioning rite at the building after the service. You are welcome to attend.

We will operate under the COVID-safe plan of the congregation, i.e. you will need to register either beforehand or on arrival and maintain social distancing at the service. Minor route alignment and start time change 

The start time of the route 704, 718 and 722 services will change from 3.20pm to 3.25pm.   

These routes will no longer observe the Carnarvon Rd bus stops, instead they will depart from the 'Lambert Rd – 26' bus stop, observing all stops including district stops via (S) Lambert Rd, (R) Central Ave, (L) Ward St and then usual route. 

Indooroopilly State High students that currently board in Carnarvon Rd will need to board their respective routes from the 'Lambert Rd – 26' bus stop.

New routes

A new A.M. route 722 service will commence, departing from Mandalay, 'Fig Tree Pocket Road - 42A' bus stop at 7.10am and travel via the P.M. 722 route path to Station Rd (omitting Indooroopilly Interchange), then (L) Westminster Rd, (R) Clarence Rd, (L) Lambert Rd, (L) Carnarvon Rd, (L) Ward St, (L) Central Ave and terminate at the 'Holy Family – 33' bus stop located on Central Ave, Indooroopilly.

The route 772 that currently operates between Toowong and Riverhills will be will be realigned to commence from Carnarvon Rd, Indooroopilly. The new service will depart from Carnarvon Rd at 3.20pm observing all stops via (L) Ward St, (L) Clarence Rd, (L) Cecil St, (L) Central Avenue, to the 'Holy Family - 33' bus stop then (S) Central Ave, (L) Clarence Rd (R) Prince St and usual route to Riverhills.

Carnarvon Rd services

The 3.15pm route 715 will continue to depart from Carnarvon Rd, Indooroopilly.

As a result of the realignment of the route 772, the route 715 that departs Carnarvon Rd at 3.20pm will be discontinued.

During the first 12 days of November, the Langer library participated in the national yearly event: 'Australia Reads'.

To celebrate the joys of reading, during lunch times, videos of authors narrating their own books were televised and presented together with a display of the mentioned titles for 'impulse borrowing'.

Seeing our readers in action was a pleasure to witness - with students, teachers and staff of all ages appreciating their Library and reading print books in any shape, form or size, in silence or aloud, individually or in a reading circle, for pleasure, information or academic purpose.

Oh, the serendipity to have the time to imagine, prepare, escape, discuss, encounter, travel and grow while improving wellbeing… Has a book found you lately?

With literally thousands of titles available, the Langer Library is a readers’ wonderland. Come along and immerse yourself into reading: during BookSurf lessons, morning tea, lunch times, while at school, at home or in between, day and night, during the festive season (holiday borrowing has commenced) - St Peters reads!

Thank you to everyone who donated presents to this year’s Kids in Crisis Christmas Appeal. On Tuesday, our Service Learning students gathered all the presents from Primary Years, Junior High and Senior School Reception so that they could be collected by the Bayside Child Safety Service Centre. The presents will now be distributed to children in care in the Cleveland area. With nearly 250 presents donated, there’s going to be a lot more Christmas cheer around this December!

REMINDER – PYP Parent Survey

As you will be aware from earlier communications, we have been in the process of undertaking a self-study into our practices as a school that implements the Primary Years Programme. In addition to the reflections of staff, we would like to ask you as our parent community to provide feedback on your perceptions of the Primary Years Programme at St Peters.

Transitions

Kym Izatt and Lia Sabri (Deputy Heads of Primary)

The end of the school year can be a nervous time for students, especially for those who will be making a major transition such as starting Junior High, Upper Primary and for those stepping up from Prep to Year 1. For these students, there are many curiosities and questions about academic rigor, physical spaces, combination lockers and generally how their school day will run. We have been preparing all students for their upcoming transitions, especially those that are making major transitions. Below, you will find the initiatives happening at each of these significant milestones. 

Prep into Year 1

The big walk over the oval for our Prep students can be a daunting experience. The new and larger space is a consideration for some, along with existing at school alongside different aged peers. Our Prep students have had many opportunities to incidentally visit the Lower Primary classroom spaces each week through their specialists lessons and assemblies. We also have been offering our students an oval play each week on the ‘big oval’ to start to become more familiar with this style of play. Starting last week, all of our Prep students ate their lunch on Friday in the Year 1 and 2 eating area and on a rotational basis will also be allowed to have a playtime in their new play spaces. Finally, all students will get to visit a Year 1 classroom on our upcoming Step Up day on Wednesday 25 November. This day gives students a chance to experience a classroom activity, explore their new classroom environment and ask any burning questions they may have! 

Year 4 into  5

Preparing our Year 4 students to move to Upper Primary began in Term 1.  The  students have engaged in Library lessons in our Upper Primary precinct with Mrs Wheeler and Mrs Andrews in the Woodrow Library throughout the year.  Sport For Life on Friday afternoon have also been with our Upper Primary students. Our Year 4 students have had lunch play ‘Up the Hill’ and have had a Q and A session with Mrs Sabri (Deputy Head of Upper Primary).  Later this term Year 4 will have the opportunity to sit in a Year 5 classroom with the current teachers and explore the surroundings further.

Year 6 into 7

Due to the changing landscape the Year 6 students will not participate in the traditional Junior High transition day.  Year 6 will be participating in a tour of the JH precinct and the classrooms.  Further transitioning activities will occur early next year.

While we have many transition initiatives currently underway, parents too play a vital part in the smooth transition to the following year at school. Here are some tips for the older students in the Primary Years. Next week we will share some transition tips for our younger students.  

ENCOURAGE SELF-ADVOCACY

Speaking up for yourself  knowing how to ask for what you need is a critical, lifelong skill. Your child can only learn it if you make an intentional effort to back away and let him or her step up to the plate.

ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO STRUGGLE

This one is always hard for parents, and for good reasons. We don’t like to see our children struggle. Our instinct is to jump in and rescue. However, we all know that the greatest lessons in life come from learning from our mistakes, and if our goal is to raise children to become strong, independent adults, we need to learn to let them stumble.

ENCOURAGE POSITIVE RISK-TAKING

Upper Primary and Junior High are the perfect time to try new things, and becoming comfortable with taking positive risks is another critical skill in adolescent development. Some ideas for Upper Primary and Junior High risk-taking include:

• Try a new sport.
• Join a club or start a new one.
• Volunteer or start a new charity drive at school.
• Expand your circle of friends.
• Try a music class.

KEEP YOUR COMMUNICATION AND CONNECTION STRONG

Even with all of this new independence, your child still needs you. In fact, we would argue that he or she needs a strong connection with you now more than ever. Your child will most certainly start pushing you away, but rest assured he or she is craving connection.

JUNIOR HIGH PRESENTATION CEREMONY

Next Tuesday 24 November (Week 8), we join together to celebrate the achievements of our Junior High students in the areas of Culture, Music, Sport and Service.  Parents of students receiving Awards at the ceremony have been emailed invitations and will need to book seats through Eventbrite.  Whilst COVID restrictions were eased further on Tuesday, the event will be in a different format than previous years as much of the organisation has already been completed.

Bronze Award recipients will be acknowledged, and certificates handed out at Year Level Assemblies before the end of the year. As the full year’s assessment is not yet complete, the Academic Awards, including Dux and Proxime Accessit, will be presented early in 2021.

Congratulations to all of our students on their amazing levels of participation in the cocurricular programs offered at St Peters. Your hard work and dedication to these activities does you credit. Students who are in the Group 5 Ironbark group will receive their awards at our Academic Awards Ceremony held in February.

Awards Descriptions

Cultural Awards:
Cultural awards cover the areas of visual arts (including art, design studies, film & television and media); theatre sports; drama and debating.  In general, the St Peters Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are presented to students who have significantly contributed to the cultural life of the College.  Students will have demonstrated significant standards in major productions, workshops, competitions, festivals or production of specific projects.  Level of participation, exceptional commitment and leadership are key factors in consideration of this award.

Music:
In general, the St Peters Music Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are awarded to musicians who have achieved significant standards in music performance, either as a soloist, in chamber music or as an outstanding performer in an ensemble.  A consistent performance and positive contributions are significant factors in consideration of this award.

Cultural Excellence Award:   
This Performing Arts Award in Music is presented to those students whose achievements as a musician can clearly be described as being Exceptional.  It would generally be expected that their achievements as a musician place them at the top of the state, and that this would be clearly evidenced in such things as awards, public recognition, distinguished practical exam results, and standard of public performance.

Sports:
Gold and Silver Sporting awards are presented to students who have represented the College in a wide variety of sports at the highest level available for their age group or who have been selected in a representative school boy/girl team (eg. Met West or QGSSSA).

The commitment to Sport by students in Years 7-12 is recognised by a Bronze award and is based on their involvement in four or more sports within a calendar year.

Fulfilling training commitments, being cooperative and demonstrating a positive example to others are also significant requirements.

Sportsperson of the Year Awards: (Female & Male)
The Sportsperson Award is presented to a female and a male who have each demonstrated a commitment to College Sporting Teams, a dedication in their particular sport and are then selected to represent at the highest school sporting levels, such as District, State or Australian teams.  Points are allocated to all levels of their involvement and the recipients of this award must have achieved the highest level within the year level and demonstrated a cooperative attitude and positive example to others, as well as having been a regular attendee at training sessions.

Service Awards:
Outstanding Service Awards are presented to students who have actively demonstrated the values of respect, care and concern for others within the College community and to the community in general.  This can entail acts of helpful and selfless service to others; the demonstration of the values of reliability, conscientiousness, consideration for others, and courtesy.  These values and an ability to accept and live up to the Christian values of the College are key criteria which are taken into account when presenting these awards.

KIDS IN CRISIS APPEAL

WONDERS OF SCIENCE

Last week during the Junior High Assembly, the regional winners of the 'Wonders of Science' Stem Challenge were presented with their medals and trophy.  The challenge task immerses students in an investigative research project that culminates in student teams presenting their project as a response to the task.  St Peters achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  An outstanding effort by all students involved.  First place winners, Sophie, Hamish, Ainsley, and Arabella will compete in the State conference on Friday 27 November.

Theatresports

St Peters Theatresports club wish to thank their Senior Theatresports players who have been passionate advocates of Theatresports since Year 8.  Ellie D, Hailey G, Jarrod M, Zara P (12) have capably assisted and lead many Theatresports games and lessons gently encouraging good improvisational practice. Prior to COVID these students were instrumental in having up to 75 students learning and playing Theatresports on a Friday lunchtime.

St Peters has been competing in the Youth Theatre sports competition before 2004. Unfortunately, the Terms 2 and 3 Youth Theatre Sports competition 2020 was cancelled so Ellie, Hailey, Jarrod and Zara did not have the chance to actively train and match their prowess against other rival school teams. Many of the students from other school teams have become firm friends over the last five years.

Sessions will be held at the St Peters Outside Gym Courts, 3:30pm – 5:00pm. Wednesday afternoon training will continue throughout Term 4, concluding on Wednesday 25 November.

Years 4 – 6 Girls Touch Football Training

Years 4 - 6 Girls Touch Football Training will be run in Term 4. While there will be no games, the sessions will provide girls with a great foundation to play Touch Football in future years. Sessions will be held at Harts Road Oval, 3:30pm – 5:00pm. Wednesday afternoon training will continue throughout Term 4, concluding on Wednesday 25 November.

Primary Years Next Gen Rugby Sessions

An email has been sent to all parents regarding the Term 4 Primary Years Rugby Sessions. It would be great to have big numbers at the sessions learning the skills required to play Rugby. The sessions in Term 4 will be part of the Primary Years afterschool programs. Thank you to the St Peters Rugby Support Group for facilitating this program for St Peters Primary Years students. Primary Years Next Gen Rugby concludes on Thursday 26 November.

Years 5 – 7 High Performance Netball Sessions

An email will be sent to all Years 5 - 7 girl’s parents regarding the Term 4 High Performance Netball Sessions. It would be great to have big numbers at the sessions and continue to build on the strong Netball community that is growing at St Peters. The High-Performance Netball sessions in Term 4 will be part of the paid sports program and there will be a cost for the sessions. The final session will be on Wednesday 25 November.

Pre-season Years 4 - 6 AIC Cricket Training

All Years 4-6 boys interested in improving their Cricket skills are welcome to attend Preseason Cricket training at the Cricket Nets throughout Term 4. Training will be held on Wednesday afternoons, 3:30pm – 5:00pm concluding on Wednesday 25 November.

It is exciting and wonderful to see our future 2021 Year 7 students coming together and getting to know each other over the past two weekends. They have been attending Saturday afternoon training session at St Peters for Cricket, Volleyball and Swimming. It has definitely been great opportunity for all current and new boys to spend some time to hone their skills as they prepare for 2021 AIC Term 1 sport.

This Saturday 21 November will be the third of four sessions arranged for the boys. We ask that all boys who are attending to go straight to their training venue.

Now that we are well underway and into Term 4, we would like to remind all students who are wishing to participate in either AIC Cricket or AIC Volleyball, to ensure that they are regularly checking both their emails and the St Peters App for updates and information about pre-season training and selection trials. 

It is vitally important that any student in 2021 (Years 7 to 12) who wishes to participate in either sport makes every effort to attend these Term 4 training sessions.

On Saturday 14 November, three of our St Peters Boys Volleyball Teams took on the might of Brisbane Boys Grammar School at home at St Peters. Playing on centre court St Peters got the upper hand in two (10A and 11A) of the three games and only narrowly being defeated in the third game (1stVI). The scores were:

10A’s won: 3 – 1
11A’s won: 3 – 1
1sts lost: 1 – 3

It proved to be a great ‘hit out’ for all involved with high level energy and enthusiasm. We thank BBGS for travelling over to St Peters and being part of an enjoyable day of Boys Volleyball.

St Peters Rugby Program – Term 4 Development Program

It is great to see St Peters collaborating with Next Gen Rugby to produce some valuable skill development programs in Term 4 for our students. These professionally facilitated programs are offering both our boys and girls from Prep to Year 11 an opportunity to enthusiastically participate in skill-based activities and game play within an enjoyable environment.  

This program is proudly funded and supported by both the St Peters Parents and Friends Group and Rugby Support Group.

Year 7 2021 – Welcome to St Peters Girls Sport 

Last Saturday was the first of two ‘Introduction to St Peters Sport’ sessions for our 2021 Year 7 girls. These sessions are designed to give the girls the opportunity to participate in Basketball, Football, Touch or Swimming (our Term 1 Sports). It was great to meet many of our new families and to catch up again with our current families. We look forward to an exciting 2021 when the girls begin their high school journey.

BWPI WATER POLO

Girls Water Polo is speeding towards the end of the first half of the season. The girls have improved exponentially and putting into play the skills they are learning at training.  They are really connecting as teams and working to each other’s strengths and the results are showing in their game play each week.  Our youngest teams are showing great promise and for the majority of the girls that have never played before, coupled with our excellent coaching has given them confidence in the pool.   As always, our girls represent St Peters as good ambassadors for the sport and show grit and gratitude in their games each week.  Keep up the great work girls and a special shout out to our coaches who are invested in their teams to learn and grow each week when they hit the pool deck.

This Saturday is the last round of fixtures for our Water Polo girls before the Christmas Holidays break. Training will commence again early next year in preparation for the second half of the season. Please watch for further details from your Team Managers and the St Peters App.

QGSSSA SENIOR SOFTBALL - Years 9, 10 & 11

Trials for our 2021 Open/Senior Softball teams are now complete, well done to all girls, we had an amazing turnout.

Our Open and Senior A teams have been named while our Senior B teams will be finalised early next year. Congratulations to all girls.

Training will commence in the first week of Term 1 next year on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, please see the St Peters App for further details.

2021 OPEN TOUCH TEAM PRE-SEASON TRIALS

The two pre-season trials for our 2021 Open Touch team are now complete. The Open team will be finalised next year, there will be an opportunity for all girls to trial again in Week 2 – Term 1.

 Please note: All Senior and Year level teams will commence trials/training in Week 3 - Term 1 next year.

2021 OPEN BASKETBALL TEAM PRE-SEASON TRIALS

Trials for the 2021 Open Basketball team are underway with three of the four sessions completed, it is great to see many girls arriving keen to get training in preparation for the 2021 season.

Sessions will continue in the Indoor Gym, 3.30pm – 5.00pm until Monday 23 November.
