The school year is rapidly drawing to a close. Over the last couple of weeks we have been holding end of year celebration ceremonies to recognise many of the outstanding achievements of our students. The depth, breadth and diversity of student achievement at St Peters continues to stand out. It has been wonderful to see students achieving highly across an array of endeavours and not just one field. It is refreshing to see students being recognised for multiple aspects of College life; be it Academics, Sport, Music, the Arts or Community Service. The value and importance of a holistic education that St Peters offers in order to develop the whole child was most evident at these Award Ceremonies. At St Peters, we really do educate the Hearts, Minds and Hands of our students.
I said to the Year 12 graduates at their Valedictory Dinner last week how proud the College was of each of them. This extends to all of our students. They have shown grit, determination, character and gratitude. A big thank you to the College’s teachers and staff for their unstinting efforts to do the best by our students. To all College families on behalf of St Peters a very big thank you for your support. The College is most appreciative of our partnership with you. A wise old Headmaster once told me that ‘good families help make good schools’. St Peters is certainly blessed with good families.
I wish all members of our community a Merry Christmas and restful break when the time comes, and look forward to welcoming our students back in January 2023, for the next phase of their St Peters journey.

Farewells and new beginnings
Last Friday we farewelled our Year 12s and they had a grand time recalling the events of their many years together. But it’s not just the Year 12s who are focussed on endings – a number of our school community are moving on and ending their time at St Peters.
Farewelling can be a time when people give you a lot of support and say charming things about you. Your friends let you know that you are loved and appreciated. Farewells can be a lovely time, but it can also be a lonely time. There’s the realisation that things will never be the same again, that friends who were with you every day will no longer be there in the same way. There is a grief that goes along with the change in friendships.
But where there is an ending, there is also a beginning – new vistas open up, new possibilities emerge, plans begin to take shape. There are new friends to find and old friends to experience in a new way. Yes, new beginnings can be difficult, but great things can come out of them, too.
This is when Jesus words in Revelation speak loudest to us: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. (Revelations 22:13.) Jesus reassures us that he is with us in our endings and in our new beginnings. He supports us in our tears and in our celebrations. This is referred to in our chapel, the Alpha and Omega – Α Ω – set in stone on our altar. We are reminded of Jesus’ continual presence in our lives; no matter where we may roam his is always there for us.
Endings and beginnings can be difficult and somewhat lonely times, but we are not alone. God gives us the strength to approach difficult situations, to face new friends, to farewell leaving friends. He comforts us in our grief, knowing that in God’s family we are never really far apart.
God bless Chaplain Kirstin

Cashless Canteen/Tuckshop facilities from 2023
From the commencement of 2023 all canteen/tuckshop facilities at the College will be cashless. Cash will no longer be accepted for transactions at Café 45, and the external Coffee Shop. The preferred method of payment is still MSA (My Student Account) with EFTPOS available in the coffee shop and in the main dining hall.
Traffic on Lambert Road
Traffic on Lambert Rd is a nightmare! To fix it, we need to minimise the number of families who are forced to drive. In 2021, The Member for Maiwar, Michael Berkman, conducted the Lambert Rd Traffic Survey to investigate options to deal with existing and future traffic congestion around Indooroopilly schools. The survey showed that many parents would like their kids to cycle to school, but don’t feel it’s a safe option. They called for safe, separated bike lanes around the school precinct.
The Member for Maiwar is pushing for Council and the State Government to work together to complete the Indooroopilly Bikeway. This would involve a separated bikeway linking the Indooroopilly Riverwalk with the St Lucia Esplanade Bikeway via Lambert Rd.
Want the State Government and Council to complete the Indooroopilly bikeway? Let Transport Minister Bailey and Cr Mackay know! The Member for Maiwar has created a helpful form email you can use to email them both here: https://www.michaelberkman.com.au/indrobikeway”
Around the College
Viv's Silly Mango | An ABC short film shot at St Peters Indooroopilly
During the April school holidays, a film crew descended on St Peters Indooroopilly to shoot Viv's Silly Mango – a comedy-drama short film and inspired by the 90s riot grrrl DIY music and arts movement. Created by Mary Duong and Rachel Choi as part of the joint ABC/Screen Australia initiative – The Kaleidoscope Project, Viv’s Silly Mango explores friendship, music, and self-discovery through an Asian-Australian lens.
Filming took place in the PAC auditorium, amphitheatre, band room, studios and Chapel forecourt and students were invited to be extras in the production. Students from Ms Baldwin’s form class were invited to partake in preproduction recording, adding classroom sound effects and background noises to add authenticity to the film.
Last Friday, our Social Justice students handed over the gifts donated as part of the 2022 Christmas Appeal to representatives of the Bayside Child Safety Community Centre.
Thank you to all those families who generously donated to the Christmas Appeal and well done to the students in the Social Justice Group - these gifts will help to bring some Christmas cheer to disadvantaged children in the Bayside area.

Environment Committee
The 2021 and 2022 Environment Committee Leaders represented St Peters Lutheran College at the SMARTwaste Brisbane awards last week at the City Hall. While we didn’t win, it was a great opportunity for the students to make connections with environmental groups that may help us to continue to improve our waste management at St Peters into the future. We were certainly inspired to continue to aim ever higher in our environmental goals for the college and the community. With 329 entries we can be very proud to be chosen as finalists in this competition.
The Environment Committee is running a textbook swap until the end of term. There are two tables; Years 10-12 textbooks are located outside the Science block, Years 7-9 textbooks are located outside JH reception. Students are encouraged to donate any books they no longer need directly to the tables or the specially marked green bins located in the Years 7,9 and 11 locker areas. All students are welcome to take any books they need for next year. The books on the table are constantly changing, so if you are after something in particular, keep checking in.

NAPLAN
Earlier this year, Education ministers announced NAPLAN will move from May to March from 2023. This means students in Years 7 and 9 will sit NAPLAN in Term 1 ensuring that results will be available to education authorities earlier in the year to inform school and system teaching and learning programs, allowing teachers to better assess what support students need for the coming year.
Information specific to the testing program will be communicated to the respective year levels at the start of 2023.
Primary Years
Primary Years News
Our Year 6 Leaders have spent much of their year supporting others and this legacy forms part of the Service Learning journey for our Primary Years Leaders before they move on to Junior High.
Next week our Leaders will deliver thank you notes to the staff of Housekeeping, Food Services and Works. Our Leaders will of course deliver these gifts on the behalf of the Primary Years in time for the staff in these areas of the College to enjoy at morning tea. These acts of gratitude, kindness and appreciation continue to develop our students as well-rounded, empathic global citizens.
Holiday Reading and Writing Options
The summer holidays is a fantastic opportunity to deep dive into recreational reading and creative writing. As team sports wind up for the year and academic pressures ease, it is easier to find time for reading and time spent with books each day helps to maintain reading and writing skills over the school break.
You may like to consider keeping a holiday reading journal or engaging in some creative book challenges – examples can be found on the Lower Primary Library Firefly page and on Prep – Year 3 class blogs. There are also many activities over the break which your children can attend and I would encourage you to check on reading and writing workshops at the following locations:
The farewelling of students who will be leaving our community is always tinged with sadness. We thank parents for entrusting the staff of St Peters with your children for the time they have been with us and wish families who are changing schools all the very best in their new environments; trusting that the learning journeys for your children will continue to be productive and positive.
We also say farewell to the following staff members: Miss Mackenzie Kane, Year 2 and Mrs Penny Patterson, Year 6 who are taking a year’s leave in 2023. Mrs Sally Hannah (Lower Primary PE) and Mrs Lidia O’Kane (Upper Primary teacher) will also take a period of long service leave into 2023. Our prayers and thoughts go with these staff as they take leave into 2023.
We farewell and thank Mrs Lauren Coote who has worked across the Primary Years for 13 years always serving with love, care and a commitment to the youngest students at St Peters. Similarly, we wish Mrs Rose Hoger and Miss Sophie McLellan all the very best as they move to exciting, new opportunities in 2023. We wish them all the very best in their future endeavours and thank them for their service to and support of our St Peters Community. I am most grateful for their loving service and commitment to the Primary Years.
I take this opportunity also, to congratulate Miss Alanah Miles who moves to an exciting opportunity as Primary Years Technology and Innovation Specialist/eLearning in 2023.
Years 4-6 Presentation Morning will be held on Tuesday 29 November at 8.30am. If you hope to attend this Presentation Morning.
Similarly, we invite you to the Primary Years Final Chapel on Tuesday 29 November at 1.30pm in the Dron Auditorium.
I would like to thank the St Peters community for their support over this last 12 months as I continue my work as Head of Primary at St Peters. It is such a privilege to work here with amazing children, parents and staff who support each other with care, dignity and respect.
On behalf of the Primary Years staff, I would like to wish you a blessed, happy and safe Christmas season. As we celebrate His birth, may the love and peace of Jesus be with you and your loved ones during this Christmas season, and I look forward to working with you all again in 2023.

Work experience
Students can do work experience during school holidays, this is a great way to see if the subjects they have chosen, and the career they are aiming for really matches with their expectations. Recently Kuwanon explored his interest in radio and podcasting at a local radio station, Triple A in West End, students have completed placements with doctors, architects, RAAF, Australia Zoo and with many more interesting vocations. Should you wish to participate in work experience please contact Ms Ingrid Rucinski i.rucinski@stpeters.qld.edu.au to register your interest and complete the necessary form to ensure your child is insured.

Round 5 Water Polo Wrap up
U12 D2 - This was a close game and our girls showed great patience and smarts with the ball. Maddie N was taking on instructions and communicating with her teammates making Coach Holly happy so she was awarded the Push Pop Award! Special mention to Addie who attacked the opposition goalie to score a goal.
U13 D2 - has improved out of sight. This team’s defence was on point not allowing Mermaids to score all game. Chloe scored two great goals. Great to see excellent passing and movement in attack from all players.
U13 D4 - Definitely 'Team of the Week' with their first win of the season!! Zoe was on fire in both defence and attack, her goal with a couple of seconds left on the clock to end the game on a high won her the team award. Heidi is always up and down the pool and being impressive. Well done girls and to both Coaches Mila and Sophie.
U14 D1 – Playing for the first time in the long and narrow shaped pool at Marist, the girls were down 2-4 at half time and lost the second half 2-5. Sophie M and Ada McN impressed winning the prizes.
U15 D3 - Maddie won the prize again with another impressive performance from the fast left hander. A little slow to start the game with Coach Tenealle thinking they need to warm up better for next week’s game. The half time score was 5-2 to us. Amelia in goals was in full communication mode calling girls back to cover in defence she set the standard for a great second half and keeping the opposition scoreless. Passing was better this week. A great team performance and good result today.
U15 D4 - A big loss today but this team played some great polo. Coach Sophie was happy with the improvement in their goal side defence and the driving in attack. With the bye last week two awards were given out, Caitlin showed some crafty plays and Emily R pushed herself to win the push pop award.
U16 D2 - A big win over the bottom of the table BGGS. Avi had loads of fast breaks and goal attempts and was awarded the team award for her efforts. Everybody pulled their weight in the team today; our defence was dominant, and we saw some attacking brilliance. Zoe chased down a rebound and shot an awesome goal. Amelia swam right into the cage and slammed dunked a goal then later in the game nailed a great back hander into the net. Gabbi scored three strong goals and her strong swimming showed as she was on top of the water looking strong all game. Beth and Hannah had it all over BGGS with their defence stealing many balls. Rose had her usual honest game saving shots and keeping BGGS to a 0-score line. Maddie M has returned from Ironbark with lots of energy. Grace and Lila were both going into Centre forward position and looking dangerous. Great team effort today 16’s!
U18 D3 - Although the score line was very one-sided Coach Claudia said there was many positives especially in the first half of the game. Poppy was awarded the Push Pop today for her great efforts in getting up and down the pool.
OPEN – The girls fought hard and went down by one goal, 9-10. An extremely tight contest that went right to the wire against Loreto. Special mention to Maizy our fabulous goalie for her goal today!
